its not this individual HGV muppet that bothers me.

cos that's just a local symptom of a far wider malaise which remains largely a taboo subject - motorists of all kinds of vehicles routinely ignoring the law to suit themselves despite being in charge of potentially lethal machinery

eg wholesale disregard of 20mph limit in Edinburgh City

MetOff has 'updated' its warning 3 times in past hour!

    But no significant differences.

At least a south bound truck did not blow over left in to cycle lane or would be out of service for week possibly.

I not sure not been allowed to cross the bridge would concern all trucks, if have a non uk driving licence and non uk registered truck and it does not tip not a big deal possibly as just a fine at worst normally. The way non uk cars can ignore congestion charge and things.

@bax, yes I agree. This muppet may or may not have endangered anyone else's life and is being charged with dangerous driving. I wonder how many of the muppets crashing on the M9 this morning while driving in excess of the speed limit will face similar charges? There were at least 3 separate crashes.

I should make it clear though I'm not suggesting he shouldn't be charged as such. More that others should be charged similarly.

I wonder if this is the closest a vehicle has come to being blown off the bridge. I'm certainly not aware of one crossing the central reservation before.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be digging out the turbo trainer then...

Interesting photo - I guess that they are both repairing the bit in the middle and dismantling/removing the cargo from the lorry so it can be shifted.

My guess (hope!) is that they'll throw the book at the driver to set an example. Wasn't there a case a few years back involving a van? I seem to recall some fairly dramatic CCTV footage of the occupants realising they were in trouble and getting out and running off...

This is dangerous driving but killing people rarely is. What a time to be alive.

Roibeard, that's hilarious (though one hopes no one was hurt...)

UPDATE: The HGV has been successfully moved off the bridge & welding teams are going to be working through the night on repairs.

of course in any sensible country, they'd now reopen a bridge lane for public transport only.

but the uk demigod of single occupant motoring must not be slighted in such fashion !

Punishing driver won't deter others. There must be scope for prosecuting employers under health and safety law which might lead to companies sacking offenders thus reducing the temptation.

Had this led to a fatality I'm sure corporate homicide might have been pursued.

There was a snowfall in south et Edinburgh last night starting about 10.15 and wind but leaving bike at work and getting a lift home after the tempest at festival theatre was cautious. I am now going to be janny two bikes at work today,

Towpath shiny and sparkly in many places between Meggetland and the bypass at 0745. The Slateford Aqueduct was dry and not icy at all.

Pavements and road at Meggetland very slidy, as was the bit of smooth tarmac on the towpath where Hailesland Rd comes really close.

For the first time this year I was very grateful for studded tyres.

Broomhouse path very bad. Just helped load a cyclist into an ambulance where the path crosses the tram track.

Biketrain - sorry to read that and hope the cyclist makes a quick and full recovery. Particularly sorry to read it as I came on to specifically to say that the path was a skating rink this morning.

He seamed to have hurt his hip. Two lady cyclist were helping when I arrived. Quite a challenge pushing the stretcher up the ramp in to the ambulance. One of the cyclist was taking care of his bike. Hope he gets better soon.

Leith Links path has lots of icy sections. Footways at Links edge also solid ice in places.

Most my route was just frosty but there was ice on the bike path at the point where it crosses the tram tracks just before Edinburgh Park Station. Actually got off and walked for 20m after sliding, putting a foot down but not falling. Same stretch where you helped after the accident @biketrain?
