Scotland’s weather: Snow plays havoc for motorway drivers

Heavy snow showers have caused delays.

But perhaps not as much as FRB closure!

Polwarth Gardens to Gilmore Place with some visible ice but not too skitey at least after 9am. But absolute carnage on Gilmore Place, I assume due to the Dundee Street closure, backed up to halfway between Viewforth and Polwarth roundabout and drivers behaving badly with pointless hasty overtakes and hogging the gutter. Gave up at Leamington Terr and went through Tollcross and Lauriston Pl (where the lane was quite icy).

  3. My local roads were frosty, didn't feel slippy though. London/Regents road, prices St/A8 all fine. Roseburn side streets frosty.

Carrick Knowe / Broomhouse path was treacherous after the Balgreen tram stop.

The council heavily gritted the balgreen ramp but nothing else. Ascending the flyover was a constant wheelspin, so my descent was done gingerly and met with an ambulance (see above) blocking the path at the track crossing. Took to the road after that, which was fine through Broomhouse to the Gyle.

Despite tweeting them, I'm not confident the council will grit the path before dark, so will probably take an all main road route home

    be careful out there...

I took the bus today. Conditions looked mixed along the route out of town and given some reports of ice I think I'm glad about my decision, although there's a niggling thought going around my head that I should have cycled anyway. Maybe I should finally buy some studded tyres?

Any reports on the state of NEPN? Needing to go down to Leith (from Shandon) tomorrow morning and not sure Dundas Street or Bonnington Road are the best idea.

The NEPN from Roseburn to Craigleith was clear. The Blackhall path from Craigleith to Silverknowes had some ice where it was more open, but I saw lots of cyclists travelling along there this morning.

Currie was white with a light covering of snow this morning. Quite slippy. Back roads to canal were covered in ice. Canal towpath white and shiny but not slippy. Aqueduct dry and ice-free.

I crashed going round a tight corner on back roads. Low speed so not much damage other than ripped grip tape, stiff legs and embarrassment. Tried to stand up and slipped around quite a bit on foot, so no chance of keeping upright on a bike without studded tyres.

Maybe I will need to get some winter tyres!

Didn't even notice it was frosty this morning until I heard the gentle crinkling of the ice under my wheels as I slowly pedaled away from my door. Took it a bit easier than normal, at least until I got onto the main road. Didn't expect that!

Still slightly frosty around the Duddingston area of the Innocent if anyone's heading that way.

Albion Place, Crawford Bridge, Bothwell St, Lochend Butterfly Way and the Restalrig path and approach slopes are all very sloppy.

Treacherous going home tonight and I ended up pushing the bike at times. Seriously considering the bus tomorrow.

I've emailed eastenvironment team and asked that Portobello Promenade is gritted as soon as possible. If riding along, please be very careful as it is very slippy.

    Cheers

Portobello seafront terrifying, I should have taken the road.

Innocent seemed mostly fine, although maybe I just couldn't see it - ignorance is bliss.

Scotland St Lane East - like a frozen pond - only time I've pushed a bike since we tried to cycle over Mount Keen a few summers ago.

Spikes on. I think the rubbing noise will abate as it's probably the wee new-tyre nodules against the mud encrusted on the inside of the mudguards rather than stud or tread against plastic.

Cul-de-sacky roads in Currie are a wee bit skitey this evening, and the footways particularly so, but the mainer roads seem OK. Had a nice 12 mile blast to get some more fresh air.

Interesting moment coming down the Mound this evening on a studless Brompton. Roads in general fine, but on the outside of the bend below Ramsay Gardens, the bike lane was white and very frosty looking. I had to make a last-minute move into the 'car' lane when I saw it.

The top half of Dublin Street was very slidy-looking and I descended it very gingerly.

Gembo - spotted a deliveroo lad hit the deck at shandwick place

There was a huddle of them in Grassmarket near Black Bull as usual. Not a night for carrying a load on a bike without winter tyres.

Pavements in EH11 wet but not slippery this morning. Seemed to have warmed up a fair bit?

That's what I was hoping for. Might try cautiously cycling today instead of bus.

Still icy further west, especially around Ravi dykes so be careful.

Broomhouse looks gritted but Pinkhill not

Broomhouse was gritted yesterday afternoon. Still had some icy patches as cover was not complete.

The bRidge over the railway and descent to the tram crossing still looked untreated.

Cycle routes in Granton like an absolute ice rink. Came off hard within 2 mins. Avoid! @edintravel @LAHinds @CyclingEdin

Friend on Facebook reporting icy paths yesterday: "I hit a patch and fell off (am fine but largely because I landed on grass due to the ambulance blocking the path that was picking up the less fortunate cyclist before me :-( )". I hope that was the same ambulance as reported upthread and not another one!

Spikes on last night and no ice for me on my central-ish commute.

    I'm (almost) disappointed...

there is a strong inverse correlation between spikes on and presence of ice
