"Severe weather warning"

  1. Don't know how all you people can stick to the paths in this weather. Main roads in and out from Livi have been fine the last 2 days, only trouble was when into work's car park.

There were patches of fairly heavy frost in places on the towpath this morning but at no point did I feel a lack of traction, although I was taking it easy including rolling around the Wester Hailes 'S' bend at barely walking pace.

The main roads are fine, the small part of path I used today in livi was very icy, long dalmahoy road was generally ok with a few small patches of ice

I lost back wheel off to the side briefly on the tow path this morning but think it was just on one of the light fittings that were a bit icy as I braked coming towards a Pedestrian.

Commute took 4 minutes longer than usual this morning.

Yes, I've been keeping off the paths in Livingston for the past few days.
Close passes at 40+mph instead, oh joy...

BOFFOF cycled the towpath yesterday and reported it "fine" - and then added that he'd seen a pedestrian slip over! His definition of "fine" may differ from others'...

Noticed that the temperature was due to rise slightly before I went to bed last night so changed my mind about the bus this morning. Apart from the road alongside Davidsons Mains park being a sheet of ice (I pushed the bike) everything was fine.

@Ed1 how long did it snow for approximately? Did much stick?

    I'm also in Livingston so
    1) 5 - 10 minutes
    2) nothing stuck - roads are still clear, paths are still to be avoided.

@fimm thanks. It seems to be easing here which is a relief.

Does anyone know if the promenade at Cramond has been gritted recently? I am considering doing the park run there tomorrow morning.

I have seen a lot of geese returning from winter migration in the past couple of weeks. Whole fields of them sitting around in mid January. Something seems very wrong there - I fear for their wellbeing. Global weather seems increasingly messed up.

With geese migration, some of them are arriving, some are leaving and some are just flying about. I am never entirely clear which is which but I know a man who does.

WoL path frozen when I jogged down to just bike repairs of Juni green this morning. Ice from Balerno to Currie and clear after that. I will come back up it later when I go in to town to pick up the bike I left at work.

Worry not. The geese have come here for respite from the tundra. This is where they spend the winter, although increasing numbers of greylag are spending the whole year here. Sometimes they come inland at high tide and loaf about or graze quietly on arable land.

For chdot (and others). For some reason I particularly have Arellcat and kaputnik in mind.

Very interesting chdot. When I were a lad, I can remember it being a regular occurrence to have waist deep (adult) snow in the fields around Stow. Sledging was one of the main winter pastimes. That is something else though in that archive - 7 metre drifts!

    Thanks for posting.

Had a wonderful ride on the Dalkeith - Penicuik path today. 50% of it was ice, but it was worth it. Felt myself sliding sideways at points, and I learned that frozen leaves are 100% worse than frozen snow.

Wouldn't reccomend it without decent tyres, mind you...

I enjoyed that video, Greenroofer. Gets a bit manic towards the end!

There is also this classic, when your engine gets marooned on the top of a snowy hill for five days and its boiler freezes solid.

No gritting evident today. paths in meadows and links very frosty, also side roads. not black ice, just white frost.

watch the turn from LW/NMW towards MMW if you're heading that way. slippery underfoot.

Small heaps of grit on Innocent just off junction in Bingham and just off Duddingstonswardsmost Road West. Not particularly icy on the path itself compared to Duddingston Row.

There was fog in Livingston this morning, though I guess it is clearing rapidly. Very cold to cycle through.

Noted a wee gritter on the pavement on the way to Balerno as well.
