"Severe weather warning"

Today was my first cycle to work in the new year.*

While I am still rusty and wheezy and lacking in oomph, the cold and frosty morning was most pleasant. Carrick Knowe gold course in particular was a sea of fuzzy white hoare frost, glistening in the early morning sun. Pockets of localised mist were forming out closer to the Gyle.

There was little in the way of gritting beyond the main road at Roseburn, but it was a sort of cold, sticky frost formed from moisture in the air, so there was little in the way of actual ice apart from the odd frozen puddle, so it felt fine underwheel with just regular tyres on.

    * = In my defence I was off work the first 2 weeks with a chest infection and flu and still have a lingering wheeze and cough so have been working from home or taking bus/train/tram.

Bus routes gritted down from Colinton to Waverly although the sides of the road looked pretty treacherous. Lots of icy puddles around. Most drivers giving me lots of space which was appreciated.

Reasonable ride although glad I had a cap on.

I was on train to Coatbridge this morning (having cycled to Waverley first). Sorely tempted to alight at Bathgate and take the path to airdrie, it was largely ice free at 10.15a.m. and the moors were lovely to behold all hoar frost and diamond dew. Only thing stopping me was a. Not super familiar with NCN75 between airdrie and coatbrig and where the school I was going to sits in relation to NCN 75. Only other ting being the route from airdrie to coatbrig is on road and dem lorries is big.

From the Met Office weather warning on the BBC website tonight:
"Ice is expected to form overnight into Tuesday morning. There is a chance of difficult driving conditions on untreated roads and slippery conditions on pavements and cycle paths are possible."

My bold, not because of the risk of ice but because they've written a weather warning that considers people other than just those in a car. It's the first time I've noticed that.

Yeah, I noticed that earlier. Hoping that they are wrong about the ice otherwise it could be a skating rink outside tomorrow.

Yes, bailed on doing the Long Commute and brought the Big Bike on the train. Would have been a cold ride in but no sign of ice.

Indeed. Still quite wet though so the risk of ice will continue as the week goes on if the temperature drops.

Remains to be seen how much Edinburgh stays (mostly) above zero.

It was 3 degrees or so the entire commute this morning - no chance of ice forming.
With the forecast, I was considering the short commute via Gilmerton but saw the traffic, lack of rain & raised temps and decided to go via Musselburgh

Yep, got up early this morning to put on the spikes and realised it was warmer than Monday morning.

    Forecasts, eh?

The wet salty road this morning nearly wrote off my chain. Fortunately I had my bike stored in the office rather than the bike shed (rare but good excuse) so I spotted it before leaving and was able to apply some emergency oil.

Been off the bike for the last fortnight and will probably be for some weeks to come. I never realised how much drier I am on the bike. My feet are always hovering above the puddles! Rather than drudging through them. :-(

Hardly severe, but snow is flurrying.

A flurry of hail in my face on most of the way in- wind wasn't strong enough to make it horizontal/painful.

Hail now easing to lighter snow at Heriot-Watt. I may regret having cycled in today.

All clear again now and it has melted on roads and paths, although Heriot-Watt Campus had been generously gritted this morning. Hopefully the cycle home will be doable.
