The Weather Channel said: “Gusts could reach 75mph.”

Yellow warnings have been issued for Central Tayside & Fife, Strathclyde, Grampian and the Highlands & Eilean Siar

    Where?

Indeed, but what they've given there refers to a non-place which translates as west island. Na h-Eileanan Siar or Na h-Eileanan an Iar are the acceptable forms of the place known in English as simply The Western Isles or perhaps the Outer Hebrides (which is itself derived from the Latin Hebudes or Ebudes, which might itself come from a Pictish word).

Yeah, but if you use non-English words in English you don't always import all the nuances. Like when you say 'We went to Le Havre.' Should be 'We went au Havre'. Or 'We went to the Havre'. Or 'We went to The Havre'? But you don't say that because it would be odd. The interface is untranslatable.

Can't always just plug one language into another. (Sounds like a game for ISIHAC.)

PS I know nothing of Gaelic beyond good morning, I'm tired, I'm wet and a few words for stones, hills, rivers and their colours.

It's the perils of chopping some "surplus" letters off a word in a foreign tongue and ending up with something that no longer makes sense in that language. Possibly better to stick with the English.

Now pleased to know that "vindkast" is a (sudden) gust. It sounds slightly D&Desque. (Also there is an unexpected cute dog picture at the end of that article.)

The Met Office has warned that most of Scotland, save for a few patches on the East coast, will be hit by ice later this evening, leading to a risk of slippery surfaces and travel problems.

Many untreated roads in the Sighthill and Broomhouse areas. Go careful out there.

I'm bemused by the compete lack of weather warning on the BBC app despite it predicting cold temperatures overnight after so much rain and light sleet/snow later today. Having said that, my back garden 'ice guage' is currently showing frost on the roof but no ice on the pooled water, although that is in City Centre...

That feeling when you've stopped at a red light at the bottom of a hill and you think "does that car coming downhill behind me have enough room to stop?" and "is the driver aware of the actual road conditions?" and so on.

@IWRATS indeed... The towpath was extensively frosty and a bit icy in places for good measure. Around two-thirds of the way across the Slateford Aqueduct I started to feel a lack of grip under my front wheel so let the bike slow itself as I got ready to put my foot down if necessary. Luckily I made it across ok. Approaching the notorious 's' bend at the corner of Wester Hailes, I noted that it was icy so attempted to stop and dismount before reaching it. This didn't quite go as planned... I didn't fall off so much as end up half-on half-off my jauntily angled bike.

The best bit about having ice tyres is cycling along merrily on black ice on rural roads and hearing a car coming up behind you and SLOW RIGHT DOWN and hang back as the driver clearly thinks you are a dangerous nutter and must be given the widest of wide berths. I normally pull in at the nearest gate to let them pass, poor souls.

...I think I will put the studs on just so I can say I have actually used them (with thanks again to @stickman from whence they came the other year).

Seeing that the towpath was still rather wet last night and ice warnings for Livingston I asked my colleague for a lift. Had enough scary icy rides in the West Lothians last year.

    And now sleeting in Livingston.

@bill quite sensible. There was some light snowy/sleet at Heriot-Watt a little while ago. Luckily I will be leaving at 4 pm today and taking it cautiously back home again...

Black ice on the path this morning between the communtity woodland at Daiches Brae and the exit at Brunstane Station. It's especially bad because the tarmac is still new and very smooth.

Almost fell off in Clerwood this morning - impressive back wheel spin when coming out a junction.

Walked through part of Davidsons Mains park (bottle crashed at the icy bit)

The cycling path looked like it had been very poorly gritted with a clear bit in the very middle of the path but very icy asides from that.

Picked up the road at Craigleith and no problems from there on. I suspect it should be fine going home although there might be the odd bit of ice on the path.
