Very slippery underfoot this morning - lots of untreated footways around town. Rural Fife is one big frost bowl if the view from train anything to go by. Similar conditions in Dundee but most footways/paths have been gritted overnight, unlike in Edinburgh...

@wishicouldgofaster - I too found the path poorly treated. I'll be using the road home tonight.

After everything I read and saw today it didn't take much for me to make the swap

It only takes a tiny shaded corner to come a cropper.

I still don't own any spiked tyres, but I have finally swapped the worn Kenda Kwick Tendril front tyre, which survived three years of commuting use without incident, for a standard Schwalbe Marathon (which was surprisingly easy to fit) to 'match' the Marathon Plus which I had fitted to the rear of my bike at its last service.

Just spotted that the Met Office warnings for Ice now refer to 'untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths'.

    Bravo.

I've now spotted that the BBC Weather app is now hiding snow and ice warnings in the 'Show UK warnings' bit under the three-dot menu. I'm sure it used to be more obvious.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow morning. As long as there are no fallen trees, I'll be zooming to work.

Not sure if I'll need flippers or a boat tomorrow! Friday looks even worse. Great. I need to get a train on Friday.

BBC Weather App warnings seem to be more prominent again, although far more information is provided by the 'Show UK warnings' option in the three-dot menu than the 'Warnings Issued' box that is available directly on the main screen.

Am quite looking forward to tomorrow's commute (as long as the rain isn't horizontal), always fun when the weather is a bit mental.

ScotRail has confirmed that no services will run between Inverness and Aberdeen, Wick and Kyle of Lochalsh, and Glasgow and Oban/Fort William/Mallaig.

@Iain McR yes but you probably have greater mass than some! (I also have great mass but I might walk in tomorrow anyway...)

Hmm, it's not sounding too bad out there at the moment. Decision time approaching.

I'm cycling, but it's a decision made easier by the fact that the wind will be at my back.

Have been out along to Currie. Took a minute. Hard on way back west. Was tough last night also about 11pm.

Those travelling west this morning will know about it. Still they will be home before they leave work tonight.

Made it to work in Livingston (bike-train-bike). It is "a bit breezy" but I'm happy with my decision to cycle. Now raining quite hard too. I was more worried about the trains but they were OK.

Now I'm here, if I'm really desperate there's a colleague I can get a lift home with.

Saw the sleeper grind past me about 0830 this morning comeing up to EDP, I'm guessing the railway are having problems today.

Yes, I think they'd preemptively cancelled a lot of trains in the north of Scotland given the forecast; but there's been signalling problems on the main Edinburgh - Glasgow line and a broken-down train affecting the Ardrie - Bathgate line.

Looks pretty horrible out there right now...

My ride to Livingston this morning was rather tiring. Took 15min longer than normally, didn't really get a chance to use the high gears, had to dismount or at least put my foot down in couple of places, cycled in the middle of the towpath (but the path was rather empty even for 6-7am) and then I got wet when got to Livingston.

At least it was warm and not frosty.

That would've been fine if I hadn't preemptively put on my waterproof trousers, which means I'm a little damp, but on the inside. I'm now changed into relatively fresh clothes in any case. There was a hint of rain as I arrived at work but I would've been fine without waterproofs as it turned out. Cycling into the wind was a bit of a slog and some of the gusts were a little hairy (I dismounted to cross the Slateford Aqueduct partly for this reason), but I have cycled in worse, both in terms of base wind speed and gustiness. I'm glad that I cycled.

I was on the motorbike yesterday and it was a bit blowy out. I cut my activities short in the evening to be home before the weather got too bad, but it was OK.

Back in the torpedo today. The windier it is, the better it goes. Sudden gusts do grab the steering a little bit; I need to fit a Storm Strip to trip the lateral boundary layer.

@jdanielp I also dismounted on the aqueduct ;) I also can remember more gusty conditions or at least they seemed that way -- I am not sure if it's just the conditions or I am getting more experienced/'skilled' :P

    @fimm,
A lot of bike train bike going on in Fife today too. There was 5 bikes on my train this morning. On Monday when I took the Helios on the same train there was only 1 other bike.

The Lyell Building was just pummelled with a quite severe blast of wind, but it passed as abruptly as it arrived. I was glad not to be cycling then... Now there is some rain.
