rider73 - it's huge, red, can only be used while reclining, favoured by exhibitionists and features a foam spraydeck.

@amir - I have access to a netamo weather station setup on George Street - AT 10:31 when KB was/is showing 0.9C That one is showing 0.5C - possibly the effects of the city locations.

The Scotbeeb news at lunch time was talking about -8 last night in Edinburgh. Apparently the coldest since the winter of 2010.

torpedo - i clicked, i'm speechless - err excuse me for saying but i'm reminded of the Sinclair C5 -

could i also ask....sorry for my bluntness but....for what is the purpose of it? to go faster than without the shell....?

If one wants to be less whimsical about the velomobile it’s a 3 wheel recumbent with a fibreglass (I think) shell

    Built for aerodynamics

@rider73 really? The BBC is suggesting that it won't get much below zero tonight and might even thaw out tomorrow.

Much cooler than a C5, and MUCH faster. :-) At the Spokes bike breakfast a while back:

could i also ask...for what is the purpose of it? to go faster than without the shell?

Lots of reasons. Faster and/or further for the same energy (Edinburgh hills notwithstanding…), comfort, year-round weather protection, visibility and road presence, safety, luggage space, and aerodynamics that aren't affected by one's luggage.

with a fibreglass (I think) shell

The earlier ones were fibreglass, but most are now carbon. It saves about 4kg on the total weight, which is still north of 30kg.

What's the longest distance people are cycling with studded tyres?

I'm using my old EBC mtb with studded 26s - it was almost as bad as the turbo! I was thinking about cycling the longer way in (12 to 15 miles) but now the short way seems hard enough!

    @amir

I had a (not tyre-related) maintenance disaster as a result of fitting studded tyres this morning (to update in confessions thread) and as I am still (theoretically) going for an annual mileage target, I need to do a longer ride tomorrow morning. The one I have planned is ~40 miles. However we'll see what happens when my alarm goes off tomorrow...

The longest I cycled this year with studied tyres on was callander but I don’t cycle very fast

I thought that my gear cable had broken on my morning commute, but it turned out that it had merely frozen. It was working again for my cycle home, having defrosted while my bike was locked outside during the day. This and the MMW cycle counter reporting 3°C just now suggests it is warming up...

    @Arellcat
ta for the info - i'm fascinated by it, and the thought of carring luggage and going on a big journey sounds pretty cool!

loving the C5 pic ;-) ahhh the 80s.........

@dougal / @paddyirish / @rider73 I have plenty of toe space, good socks, decent windproof goretex overshoes. Nothing seems to help! @Arellcat has tried tinfoil to no avail. I'm thinking of cutting up one of those sheets of shiny stuff you stick behind radiators...

@Iwrats I'll knock up a prototype for Kickstarter.
Using what, exactly? Is it time for the mortsafe to make a return to Edinburgh kirkyards?

@Frenchy re: Raynaud's - if you can get a very, very mild version I might have it - feet in particular have always lost circulation very easily and go a lovely shade of yellow-white. Winter digging as an archaeologist was particularly bad - feet like blocks of wood for half of every working day. But I don't get much pain when they come back to life, so it might just be pathetic circulation!

@rider73 it was definitely minus something this morning, but urban/rural temperature differences can indeed be very noticeable.

Why not try constructing a pair of overshoes, or even half-overshoes, from the radiator stuff? Use hot glue to join the parts. 1 inch Gorilla tape is a very good addition/alternative.

There were mini gritters on the Broomhouse Path this evening so assuming it doesn't rain they should be fine tomorrow.

@Arellcat this is definitely straying into a place where I might start to look a wee bit... eccentric?

@rider73 - as Arellcat says the attraction of velomobiles is 'cycling indoors, out of doors'.
We've only sold four vms so pretty rare here.
Full suspension, built in lights etc
Quest in Dronten NL are a big producer with a very well worked out product with hundreds sold. Waiting list of around 9 months as each one is made to order.
Rare shot of two in Edinburgh.

Not for everyone but an amazing human powered experience as they just roll along once up to speed.
If it does get extra frosty I'd rather use a reclined trike than use ice tyres. Parking though does need more consideration!

You're talking to a recumbent rider, that ship sailed :D

@Steveo exactly - I still have a facade of normality to maintain. (Until I break and get a recumbent, obviously!)

    -2.5 in D/Bay this morning , so 50% warmer.

it did seem to warm up on the way home last night, that was a worry as paths get damp and then refreeze

from the being in the car queue to get on the QFC , the FRB new cycle paths looked damp and shiny this morning.

    be careful.

  27. @unhurt Have you tried wearing a thin sock, then putting a plastic sandwich bag over that, with another (thicker) sock over that? Basically a layer of plastic between two socks, which acts as an insulator.

You might end up with clammy feet - but it certainly helped me retain foot warmth without resorting to overshoes last winter!

I wear two sets of overshoes when it's very cold. Seems to help.

It seems warmer today. However I couldn't be bothered to brave it today (in part due to hibernation mode and part due to concern about rain forecast pm (frozen)). Big mistake. Traffic is horrendous (crash somewhere?) and bus is crawling. It would have been faster walking the 5 miles

I definitely feel less cold this morning. However that might be because I'm wearing more clothes (our office was not that warm yesterday).

Definitely meant to put the studly tyres on last night but ran out of time (energy). This morning was scary going through Linlithgow though I was surprised to be riding through a couple of inches of slushy snow outside the train station there. Where did that come from? Localised snowfall on Back Station Road?!
