Due to some stupid on my part I may or may not be taking delivery of some 700x42 Schwalbe Winter tyres in the near future, which I have almost zero use for.

They might not turn up in the first place if the German discount web company has managed to halt their couriers, but if not I'll just return them and get my refund.

This is of course unless someone here wants a pair, in which case it seems silly to have them come all the way from the Germany just to go back, so I'll sell them on for the £38 I paid for the pair.

Schwalbe Winter are the kind with two rows of studs on the crown, distinct from Schwalbe Marathon Winter, which have a further two rows on the edges. Dave and Kappers have given favourable reviews.

The size I thought I was ordering is 700x30, which are out of stock until the 10th, but once they get them in, I is well 'aving some.

Instography and Wingpig of this parish have already expressed an interest. If you gents can confirm, I will order three pairs on the 10th or thereabouts.

If other persons of this parish fancy some of bike-discount.de wares and wish to skim the fiver-ish of delivery cost, now is a capital time to place an order by proxy.

SRD: looks like they only have the full fat version that you already have: http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k645/a81176/marathon-winter-168-spikes-20-x-16-wired.html

If you need replacements, I'll naturally add them.

Why would one use Schwalbe Winter rather than Schwalbe Marathon Winter, if the latter have extra studs?

yeah. the studs i had on previous winters died.

will need replacing, but may wait until slightly later in the year.

They only make Winter in 30mm. Smallest Marathon Winter size is 35mm.

They're also cheaper and lighter, but I'm getting them because they'll fit under my mudguards.

    1/ available in narrower sizes
2/ you don't necessarily need the outer studs on a narrower tyre to stay upright in the snow / slush / ice.
    3/ cheaper

Apart from that, the Marathon flavour is marginally (5-ish grams) lighter, they both inflate to the same pressure, so I assume it's mainly reasons 1 and 3 above.

P.S. not to contradict Uberuce, they are indeed lighter, but only when comparing a 42 and a 30mm tyre. If you compare the 26x1.75 which comes in both types, Marathon wins ever so slightly.

I am now confused. I thought the Marathon branding denoted extra puncture protection, which I'd assumed was heavier.

@Uberuce I think the non-Marathon branding denotes cheaper, thicker ergo heavier rubber. At least in the winter stakes.

I have a pair of 700 37 Schwalbe Winter tyres. Two rows of studs instead of 4. Only once pinch punctured, my own fault. Used for 2 winters now and looking good for this coming winter. I don't see that much frost as I'm mainly cycling at sea level.

    Ooh, nicely timed.

Can you stick me down for a pair as well please. Can either wire funds across, or leave with LaidBack this weekend...

Hmm, I can run 700x42 on mine, but only at the front and I think there's life left in that one (it's done two winters, but it's on the front...)

I'll have a scout when I get home and see how memory serves.

Re which tyre to prefer, I think the Marathon four-stud version would be better if the going was severe (i.e. you'd let the air out so all four rows of studs are biting) but I found I could still ride around on frozen puddles with the tyres blown up hard, so I reckon 99% of the time the two stud version would be just fine.

42mm mistaken tyres arrived today. I never got round to putting a note on my door explaining to the postie I wanted to refuse delivery, so he or she left them with my neighbour.

If no-one here wants, I'll put 'em on Gumtree.

Yeah, go on. Chances are, like last year, the days when they'd be useful on the NEPN I won't have a legitimate excuse to lie on the sofa dozing and pretending to work.

I guess they'll be for Eddie? I've looked into the disc flavour of those forks and they are clearancetastic.

I'm off to wurk right now, and will arrange pickup/dropoff once I'm back.

The darn things are still not in stock, so you are golden. I got you text, but I was at work and never got a minute to reply.

The order is currently looking at:

    Pair of 700x30c for Darkerside
    Pair of 700x30c for Wingpig
    Pair of 700x30c for Uberuce
One 20x1.6" in fullfat studly for SRD

So there's room to add more.

Uberuce, would it be possible to include the 50 spare spikes and tool package in your order?

I need a few replacement studs from last winter and I'm a sucker for a custom tool.

I will point out they send replacement studs for free and that it's not too much of a wrestle to use a screwdriver, but I can add that, yush.

Cheers Bruce, I'll suggest my mate gets his A8se in gear and choses something tomorrow!

I'm tempted by a double pack of replacement studs! Mine are defo getting very blunt.

Do they do them in 700x37 flavour?

Looks like 35 is your closest, which comes in both Marathon and half-stud.

If you want, you can have my 35's for free. They're looking a bit past it in terms of shiny sharp spikes, but the rubber part looks grand, so adding another couple of bags of 50 replacements would be a thrifty option. I'd most likely do that if they'd fit under my new full mudguards, which they don't.

Any chance you could throw in half a dozen of these Shimano dynamo connectors for DaveC and I?

Good idea, I'll have a couple of those connectors too, better to buy before I need them at that price.

    Thanks Bruce
Yes, screwdriver and pliers - I had to put a stud back in that mysteriously appeared on the shed floor. I decided I'd rather reduce the probability of collateral damage to my hands and fingers.

Probably easiest if you pick up the old tyres asap, then we'll decide how many replacements to order when the 30's come in stock.
