Road layout changes in the west end at Ryans bar? (Also Haymarket)

The road layout here has changed again and everyone seems confused. Taxi driver told me to get off as it was one way. Got off and had a look at the signs which seem to indicate that it is two way but only for 'local buses' and neither cycles (nor taxis!) are permitted. Anyone know who to contact? Any alternative route ideas?

    Which directions?

I've been blindly following the buses eastbound onto Princes street for the past week. I haven't had to come this way westbound since the change, though.

Contact Central Team and ask them to fix signage (or clarify if cycles allowed?)

If cycles not allowed, complain to council.

Lothian Road to Queensferry Street is now back to the pre-tramworks arrangement, with the dodgy wee slip lane.

Queensferry Street to Lothian Road used to exist pre-tram but that's all gone now, by the look of it -- so its round by Hope Street as with the tramworks arrangement, or nip over the ped crossing at Shandwick Place or House of Fraser, which I don't like doing but it saves quite a few minutes.

Cyclists definitely should be allowed to travel Hope Street to Queensferry Street, otherwise you'd be restricted to the dodgy wee slip lane on Princes Street, which if I haven't already pointed out, is well dodgy. And even dodgier when the trams get going.

I wouldn't ever be taking any backchat from an Edinburgh taxi driver, in any event.

Will do. Will also check teh signage again later. Didn't notice any whilst heading from queensferry street towards Charlotte square but heading west there is a 'local buses only' sign. Rubbish. Makes absolutely no sense.

  6. It's almost enough to make you think that the council saying it's aim is for 10% of journeys by bike in 2020 is a great big fat lie. But that would be wrong wouldn't it?

Local buses for local people. None of your soap dodgers here thank you very much. You'll have had your tea?

Noticed this yesterday, when heading up Hope St for Queensferry St. That wee road round by Ryan's bar is now a single lane with traffic lights controlling one way at a time traffic. Stagecoach go into Edinburgh ov erht new Queensfeery road - Princes Street slip, and back the same way when leaving. Drivers complained about the longer times stuck at the end of Shandwick place and I complained to SC via twitter and they said they'd pass it on.

We cycled along Charlotte Sw to Hope St but once we saw the Bus Only signs we did a U turn and rode along the NCN1 past the church to Queensferry St over the cccccc(w)obbles...

So... does this mean that the only legal way into Queensferry Street is via the dodgy wee slip lane on Princes St?

The dodgy slip lane that is already full to the brim when one single stagecoach bus is sitting in it, waiting for the filter to go green?

    Wonderful planning. Heads should roll.

From Alva Street up to the end of Queenstreet is Busses and Taxis and cycles only unless you are driving up for access to Queensferry St Ln, and has been for some time now. From Hope St round by Ryans's Bar, there is a Busses Only sign.

You can get onto Queensferry St from Queens Street from or Melville St only. Nothing further south (discounting Randolph Pl, which is entry and exit only from/to Queensferry st.

Just had a look at the latest piece on the council website. It appears that once the final stage of the West End works is open (Oct 19), "Queensferry Street will be open to all traffic eastbound into Hope Street. West bound traffic from Hope Street into Quesnferry Street will be restricted to bus traffic only"
Just wish there was an easy way to get from Melville Street to Lothian Road by bike without jumping off and crossing at the lights at Frasers.

Came through here yesterday evening. Coming from Charlotte Square there is indeed a sign saying "buses only" and a picture of only a bus. However I ignored it, as did the rider of the rickshaw coming the other way! (I went a different way on the way out.)

Once Shandwick Place is open I would more naturally go that way (I'm heading for Haymarket) but that will depend on the tram track situation.

and a picture of only a bus

Indeed, saw this too, however there isn't a sign saying bicycles are banned - would that stand up to an overly-officious plod who pulled someone over for cycling round here?

Sign is mounted on what appears to be a temporary pole where the island is here

I tried to go from Queensferry Street to Princes Street last night. Another cyclist at the lights in front of me made the illegal right into Lothian Road. I was originally going round there to check positions of tramlines with respect to road lanes in order to be ready for them when in harassing traffic but there was a giant cherry-picker in the straight-on-bus-taxi-cycle-only green-splodge lane, to the left of which everything had to veer.

Have contacted central team - not heard back yet.
@ kaputnik - road is painted 'buses only' ...LARGE letters!!
@DaveC. Where is the NCN 1? I thought the end of Randolf place was a 'no cycling' zone

The Tram Traffic Regulation Order drawings are available on the Council's webite at:

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20236/about_the_trams/1964/tram_documentation/2

Look at the "proposed sitution" drawings, as these are the ones that were agreed by the Council.

Bafflingly, looking at the drawings, at foot of Lothian Road where there's the no left turn signs, there's the annotation "for left turn, cyclists dismount"!

How on earth does that help?! Where is one meant to dismount from/to in moving traffic.

    Eejits.

Drawings don't cover Charlotte Square unfortunately.

ASLs are painted with a large bike, for all the good it does! :)

It doesn't. But whenever you design yourself into a corner and can't get out of it except by 'going Dutch', you just tell cyclists to dismount and everything will be OK.

So cyclists won't dismount, and will turn left anyway, probably across the hugely extended pavement. Velomobiles with enclosed front wheels will not be able to make a turn of that radius, and the pilots will not be of a mind to 'dismount' on a whim.

Hope the signs are very very clear at the end of Dalry Road, as the past few weeks have involved a legalised temporary ignoring of the refreshed road-arrows and no-entry signs for going up Morrison St.

So effectively they've made Torphichen Place 2-way, whereas it was not before, but done nothing to widen the pavements/improve the pedestrian experience for the busy Haymarket Stn to EICC walking route.

And it's not like the whole traffic system round there is over-engineered in the first place. Not.

    Sigh...

I'm expecting much confusion on Monday, lots of 'words' on the council website explaining changes. Some maps would also be handy for those that are from out of town and don't know all of the street names, and how they connect with each other. (Like me ;) )
