put up some signs telling cyclists how to cross the lines, and fine taxi drivers who are sticking out into the road

    "

You mean 'signs explaining that vehicles need to keep well back and expect cyclists to move in odd directions'(?)

  2. Nope, I mean signs telling cyclists the safe way to cross the tracks (no more detail than that). And yes, signs telling the traffic to look out for cyclists would seem as appropriate (and likely be as effective).

ok, who wants a bet that the sign will show a bike crossing the tracks at a 90 degree angle?

So the council is advocating cyclists turn 90 degrees to the tracks in the middle of the lane in moving traffic? Should we signal? or just shoulder check and pull out? and what happens if we're given no quarter? Do we stop still, and wait until the outside line is clear?

    This is a joke? no?

    @ paul.mag

    Either that or this:

Either way, that would be a huge cop out. Any sign-only "fix" is going to be a cop out.

Signs are there now....... Sorry, ahem, he he, ha ha ha, hmmmm, give me a second whilst I compose myself.........................

Right, I saw 2 signs, one which says something of the order "Cyclists, beware, tram lines, slip risk" and the second one, "Cyclists, please use the cycle lane provided to navigate tram line"

    Yeah, ACTION!

Do they really expect people to wait several minutes in the jug handle? It's just not going to happen.

At peak time there won't be enough room anyway (the ASL would fill up)

The positive? They acted quickly after they said they would.

The negative? They did nothing to solve the issue!

    Our surprise at this? None.

I wasn't expecting miracles in the space of a few hours but that is still pathetic.

"Cyclists, please use the cycle lane provided to navigate tram line"

And you just know that that one, despite being a request will be used by motorists as a metaphorical baton to hit any cyclist who opts to stay on the road rather than get held up at a red light in a busy taxi rank.

Absolutely - it's bad enough when motorists seem to think that cycling apologetically in the gutter is good cycling, but putting this sort of sign up just affirms their ignorance.

It would be a terrible thing if someone were to subvert these signs, replacing them with some encouraging cyclists to become airborne and warning cars of low-flying cyclists...

This sucks beyond belief. Somehow always knew the solution would be something as shit as this.

So, a high-profile, joint campaign by a newly-formed alliance between taxi drivers and cyclists has been met with measures that are likely to stop that fragile alliance in its, er, tracks:

    - taxi drivers to face fines, thanks to complaints by cyclists (or so some drivers may perceive it)
    - cyclists exhorted to use the jug-handle, which will probably result in a lot of RLJ'ing as riders lose patience, as well as having plenty of taxi/bike conflict potential.

So CEC... <ironic tone> thanks so much for encouraging us to be so nice to each other.

    <despair>

I've seen more taxis jump the reds there than cyclists!

But true - it's going to cause more conflict. It's forcing both parties to use the infrastructure they both deem unsuitable.

Not sure why they didn't make the jug handle give way, it would still be rubbish but probably not as bad.

What they need is a pedestrian style pelican crossing type button convenient at the lights outside Haymarket, as it appears the sensors don't recognise cyclists. That way cyclists using the Jug Handle press the button for quick light sequence change to our advantage.

I don't think they could in the long term, due to the trams entering/leaving Haymarket Yards. That said, the jughandle should get a green every time the green man is on at the start of Haymarket Terrace westbound (presumably when Dalry Rd traffic has a green). It currently doesn't seem to.

It's simple to do with a ground induction loop. Put it further back in the jug handle than the ASL box and lights would already be getting ready to change as you approach.

I get the feeling everything's working as if trams were running, even through they clearly aren't. The inexplicable gaps would be to let the ghost trams through.

  18. My word. I thought, on hearing there would be signs, that they would be bad. Didn't think they'd be that bad.

  19. Oh, and apparently a 12 year old boy fell yesterday and was concussed.

I think Father Dougal with "Careful Now" written on a piece of cardboard would have been equally effective

  21. While 'Down with this sort of thing' might be a touch insensitive given people are falling...

And Father Ted holding a sign with a cyclist on it, saying "Down with this sort of thing" would be eerily topical too...

(today I also used, "This fox is very small, that fox is far away" when discussing the video of a fox with a work colleague)

I rumbled through Haymarket late this afternoon and noticed someone standing by the clock, with camera and tripod aimed at 'The Gauntlet'.

He may have had results. I wish it were otherwise but its record so far hasn't been great as far as cycling goes.

There's actually a third sign saying something along the lines of "extent of taxi rank".

A few minutes of observation on Friday showed all 3 signs being ignored by those at whom they were aimed.
