Road layout changes in the west end at Ryans bar? (Also Haymarket)

I've just come through Haymarket heading west on the bus, and deliberately sat at the front upstairs to give me a higher view of the layout. I can't believe that I cycled through this in the dark and wet over the last few nights - the view from the bus shows just how close cars come to the tram lines where cyclists will be crossing.

It's been an eye-opener and I am seriously thinking of heading down Dalry road/murieston/Russell Road to get to my target of Roseburn Park. I know Russell Road is far from ideal, but at least then I only have to deal with bad drivers, not the additional hazard of tram lines.

    Maybe problem is now solved(?)

One solution would be to create a segregated cycle lane through the jug handle on the left-hand (i.e pavement) side. Taxis would then travel through the jug handle on the right-hand side & pick up their fares from the island (to the right of where the cycle lane currently is).

Pedestrians would cross to the island by means of a raised, wide zebra crossing. The raised part effectively forming a speed bump for cyclists, & cyclists giving way to peds.

The exit of the segregated lane should also be designed to rejoin the main carriageway in such a way that the cyclist does not need to stop i.e it would bypass on the inside any traffic light & their would be a kerb allowing a smooth merge of cycles & cars.

Should be possible... what do you think...?

MOTORISTS have been warned to expect traffic snagging points as Edinburgh’s city centre comes to grips with its new post-tram road system.

    ...

Cycling, skateboarding and roller blading on tram stops will not be allowed, with passengers to face fines of up to £1000 and year-long bans if they misbehave.

    ...

Transport Minister Keith Brown predicted Edinburgh would soon have a modern transport system it could be proud of.

    From 'rubbish driving' thread -

    "
Goes to all the cars driving east on West Maitland St, turning right onto Torphichen St who decided that the queue of traffic was far too long so pull out into the "Tram Only" lane (solid white line on both sides) - only to be squeezed over to the opposite lane going around the corner by the correctly positioned bus taking a narrow line.

How long before CEC admit this simply isn't going to work and is too dangerous? And who is going to be brave stupid enough to describe it as "teething problems"?

I took the bus into Edinburgh today, slight problem with the flood at craiglockhart. Bus did go through Haymarket and through Shandwick place. I was with my son so we were sitting top deck front seats so good view.

my opinion is that cars are going to have to be forced to obey the road layout otherwise will be some accidents. If I was a driver going into Edinburgh I would avoid this route at all costs.

Sometimes the tram lines are both on the westbound side of the road, then the middle etc.

Buses also going to struggle through the route when busy.

All this before any trams on the route.

I've long thought that the road system in Edinburgh is way too complicated. Drivers unfamiliar with the lay-out do not have time to understand where they can and can't go whilst also looking out for other cars, buses, peds and cyclists, with the end result being that hairy stuff happens to the latter while the drivers try to work out what is going on. And to make things worse, most of the instructions are painted on the road, thereby becoming largely invisible on a wet night or underneath the car in front.

They should close (permeable barriers) a load of streets to traffic to keep it nice and simple.

@ps closing streets not a vote winner but is necessary and trams make it more so. Checkout the Carlton Reid article from 1998 when Edinburgh under n fluency of david begg was going down that route, if I recall correctly? In the other thread

It's not really surprising that people are failing off at Haymarket.

It's not just a question of dealing with the tram tracks (and the gap between).

    Three gaps

These 'troughs' may be 'within tolerance', but...

At least yesterday part of the barrier had been moved -

So now it's possible to cycle illegally(?) through the tram stop to the lovely Haymarket Yards -

@chdot if that's £1 coins then rails are well above tolerance accepted by Sheffield, who took a big hit from civil claim by car driver who lost control because rails lifted tyres up off the road, and side ridge looks unchanged from when I took photos months ago.

I used straightedge from traffic cone and 5p piece (18mm diameter) and the coin was dropped to the centreline by the step at the edge (ie the step is 9-10mm, way past 6mm max).

    Yes.

3 'troughs' must make it more difficult on thin tyres.

I'm deeply surprised to learn that even taxi drivers obey the law when the police are watching them...

There were policepersons there when I went past on Friday - but they were interacting with a group of possibly not-totally-sober people and didn't seem to have anything to say to the taxi driver who drove into the ASL. Sadly I was in a hurry so didn't take photos - my initial impression was that the coppers were there looking at the ASL but then I wasn't so sure.

Forgive me forum for I have sinned.

I tried to do the right thing and followed the virtuous path by the jug handle.

I waited at the ASL red light and watched as the traffic that was behind me on Morrison Street went past.

I waited at the ASL red light and watched as buses from West Maitland Street went past.

I waited at the ASL red light and nothing went past.

I waited at the ASL red light as another phase of traffic from Morrison Street went past.

I waited at the ASL red light and nothing went past.

I waited at the ASL red light with a car behind me creeping forwards.

I waited at the ASL for over four minutes until I could wait no more.

I slipped through the ASL red light and cursed myself for ignoring the kindness and thought that Edinburgh Council had shown me, a lowly cyclist, in providing such a well designed piece of infrastructure.

    I am truly sorry.

There were 2 taxis on the double yellows when I got there tonight.

I made a point of standing behind the second one with my strobe light glaring in their rear window whilst doing a 'shooing' motion for a couple of minutes. I then dismounted and walked round to the drivers window and explained (very politely) that it was a double yellow they were parked on, and that it was double yellow for a reason before going on to tell her about the danger to cyclists, and the angle of crossing the tram lines being terrible etc etc.

I then walked to the next taxi, the driver was standing outside the taxi, and went through all of the same (very polite) explaining again.

What struck me most was the same glakit look both of them gave when I was speaking, no reply, just a glakit stare. They were looking at me, but neither were listening, and I'm sure if I had asked either of them to repeat one sentence I had said, I'm pretty sure they would have been incapable.

Maybe they teach that look at Taxi school? sigh.

Come on, you know that the one thing they certainly don't teach at taxi school is "responsibility for your actions".
