Sounds a bit like the 'summer is over' headlines in May...

The winter-apocalypse headlines come earlier every year.

    *Googles briefly*

    *giggles briefly*

I mentioned the 'bloke with laptop' story from last year recently. Well, one of the forecasters is that bloke again; Jonathan Powell.

    http://www.monbiot.com/2012/06/15/storm-warning/

The other describes his totes awesomesauce science part(concentrate) thusly:

No meteorological or climate models have been used in the production of the following long-range weather forecasts. All forecasts are produced on a number of personal observations and calculations, that also include; solar activity, ocean behaviour, and historical weather patterns from my own unique collective data. This method of forecasting allows me to make a long term judgement on the factors that I consider to be the most important, and what I also consider to be the most reliable in the future for long term weather forecasting.

This reminds me of my surprise discovering that you can cut cable locks with ordinary pliers. Okay, I knew I shouldn't be surprised, but I still was. Likewise I ought to have expected journalistic integrity didn't extend to five minute on the webz.

I need to get myself a laptop and a few stock photos...

I stupidly mentioned the story to my wife, plus the Grangemouth potential strike. She's now disappeared to the shops and to get diesel for her car. Goodbye, money.

Surely the real question is, what does this tell us about the death of Princess Diana?

Oh 'er indoors' said her mate also recons its going to be a bad winter, as the trees and bushes have produced more fruit this year so the squirels and other animals can stock up... shakes head... looks skywards...

I don't know if anyone else is watching that science series with Prof Brian Cox which is on iPlayer just now.

It makes me marvel at how smart people can be.

I guess this is the other side of the coin!

From Jonathon Powell's current website/company; Vantage Weather Solutions:

"VWS is one of the few forecasters to cast serious doubt over the whole issue of climate change and its twin guise of global warming. As from the outset when the media first became seriously interested in the issue several years ago, our stance remains firm with the belief that firstly, it is all cyclical and not one progressive trend towards an eventuality, and secondly, that the evidence provided remains inconclusive."

Blimey - read the comments on the Met Office article!

Yeah seems weather discussion very quickly turns into a global warming debate. Similar to our helmet discussions?

Zenfrozt - thanks for the link. I do love the comments - all along the lines of "Yeah, you Met Office guys and your "so-called" education and super computers, satellites and decades of research know nothing. However, Bob and his pine cones on a string clearly knows his stuff."

I suspect that these chaps may share the same view of cyclists as EEN commenters. Could be wrong of course...

Its interesting that most of Norway is currently covered in snow, has been for days now, reaching down nearly as far south as Trondheim.

    http://www.webcamsinnorway.com/map/

Last time this happened so early in the season, was the heavy winter we had in 2010.

That's my winter bike now properly maintained and ready for action..

Meanwhile the forecast for the next few days is pretty warm (15 on Tuesday) if wet. I was in summer kit this morning.

My hands, without gloves, were very slightly chilly this morning. Without a doubt, this is a clear sign that wintergeddon is upon us.

Melanie Hornett, NHS Lothian’s director of unscheduled care, described winter as presenting a “huge risk” and recently told the NHS Lothian board that early reports had suggested the weather in coming months would be “harsh”.

Has she been listening to Jonathon Powell?

Exclusive report: Health services are reporting a sharp increase in scaremongeritis throughout the country. One A+E worker informs us that while it is normal to see the odd case throughout the winter months, this is the first year a case has been confirmed this early. Based on previous trends it is predicted almost every household will have at least one news source affected by the condition by December. Common symptoms include:

-Inability to stop vomiting phrases such as 'meltdown', 'shutdown', 'overload', 'crisis'

-Discharge of watery verbage implying the imminent downfall of human civilisation

-Uncontrolled shaking of hands leading to the typing of hysterical articles

-Cognitive impairment leading to shock upon being informed that, as the Earth continues to orbit the sun, the wintery weather will subside and has indeed done so for billions of years

-Memory loss limited to recollection of previous winter seasons that passed without incident

-Blindness that prevents affected individuals from acknowledging the existence of other countries that have survived winter without an outbreak

Affected individuals are encouraged not to stay inside and instead should mix with as wide a variety of people as possible. Studies have shown that observing the country running normally for the time of year leads to vast improvements in symptoms. The condition is not contagious but can be passed between people that share URLs leading to certain newspaper sites. Please consider sterilising your browser in between uses.

There is black ice this morning. Winter Bike does not have its winter tyres on yet, so I have had to cancel my planned ride today. :(

this is the week of the year with the highest number of deaths, although the Christmas week has very high number of deaths compared with people admitted to hospital.

    Not apparently caused by weather

using the Gembo Scope it looks like lots of folk hold off going to hospital over Xmas new year then first full week of new year go into hospital and die.

I'm sure this is a perennial question on here, and apologies if it's been answered a thousand times already, but what is the general approach to winter commuting - tyre-wise.

So far I've not really had any problems on the Cross bike, but I'm about to have my hybrid serviced for winter use. It's got wider, chunkier tyres (although not winter specific), and my general plan is to turn to it when there's clearly ice or light snow on the ground.

Should I go the whole way and put studded tyres (e.g. Marathon Winters) on the hybrid? Or is this overkill for what may just be a few days over the next couple of months?

Today spiked tyres def helpful - was just logging on to report that the access points to canal at meggetland - black ice, also the carricknowe path towards the zoo. Mr SRD reported rear tyre (unstudded) slipping out, but front studded tyre fine.

I tried studded tyres for the first time last year, they were a revelation ! I don't how how I survived my previous 3 decades of winter riding without.

Lots of black ice today: Stockbridge, Meadows/Marchmont, Craiglockhart, canal path, among others. Seems neither roads nor paths have been gritted or salted. Likely to freeze again tonight - be careful out there.

Boyfriend reported two different cyclists off in the Meadows area this morning - assume ice-related. He thought the temperature might have dropped early morning catching people out. I can report that trail shoes are a bad choice on icy pavements (but great on frozen grass)
