    @ WINGPIG

Would this be the exact same Black Cab #922, LP13 HRU who I've posted a video of further up this exact same thread 9 months ago?

Feel free to send them the link to the video but I'm afraid I didn't report to the licensing people, though now it's clear that he has previous then I shan't hesitate again.

In the space of one 20 minute commute I personally witnessed 3 of Edinburghs best professional drivers

Drive into an ASL while the lights were red (I had the satisfaction of plonking myself front and centre just in front of the cab/box then setting off slowly)

Pull from the left to the right lane with no signal and clearly no mirror check about a foot in front of my wheel going about 25mph down Lothian Road. I swore.

Skip through a red light by about 2 seconds after it turned, which I was sure only bikes did.

    Anyway. Happy cycling all.

    Taxi Complaint

I refer to the above complaint and your recent correspondence with this office.

The taxi driver has been traced and interviewed, he was advised of the nature and details of the complaint.

The driver does not remember the incident, however he was advised that he must take extra care around cyclist and that road safety was of paramount importance at all times.

He was warned about future behaviour with regards to this incident and has been advised that the circumstances of this incident have been attached to his driver record and may be referred to should he come to our attention in the future.

In relation to the YouTube clip that you attached, this incident was subject to a complaint last year and was dealt with at the time. It was not however the same driver on that occasion.

I hope this addresses the matter and thank you for bringing the circumstances to our attention.

I have attached a link to our customer satisfaction survey and would ask that you take a few minutes to complete this.

    Yours sincerely

Really good the way that they are willing to be informative about the YouTube clip too.

Perhaps it's the vehicle that is at fault, not the poor taxi drivers :)

Maybe it's on a secret 'driverless car' trial(?)

That's interesting, seeing as it's my clip and I didn't make a complaint to the Traffic Commissioner. I wonder who complained and what the response was or if they're just saying this to shut that down?

Taxi tried to pull left onto the bit of road I was cycling on. I thought about making an issue of it for about two turns of the pedals, and then braked and let him in.

It is funny, I'm much more helpful to people overtaking me when I'm driving...

Yes, but I bet they are (usually) more careful to make sure that there is space to overtake into.

Silver Taxi 192. Heading into town on the A8 today just past the zoo. Very close pass.

I was moving the same speed as the cars, so there was no need.

I got it on video, but the quality isn't that great. Hopefully my new Virb will come today. I'll post it anyway when I've uploaded it.

Aggressive MGIF while passing through the junction outside Baillie Gifford, so that the taxi could make it down Calton Road and into the station drop-off point whole seconds before me. I was in the lift before the taxi's passenger. She looked the other way.

It seems impossible to head towards Calton Road without someone overtaking. Is this actually illegal or just incredibly frustrating and dangerous?

    "Dear Sir or Madam

I refer you to this video on YouTube, which I have published today

I was cycling along Gogar Station Road about 1645 this afternoon, when I experienced two inappropriate overtakes from taxis that seemed to be carrying an Edinburgh taxi plate.

In the first, an M8 with registration number SB11 FUW overtook me when approaching a blind corner. An oncoming car was forced to come to a halt to avoid a collision. In the second, a TX-series vehicle SK62 WWG overtook me on another blind corner without leaving sufficient room.

Please will you speak to the drivers of these vehicles and remind them:

    1. That when cyclists are riding in 'primary' position in the middle of the traffic lane (as I was doing), this indicates that they do not wish to be overtaken at that point. 'Primary' position is recognised best practice for cyclists, as an internet search will confirm.
    2. That when overtaking a cyclist, the Highway Code requires that they should leave as much room as they would when overtaking a car. (To be fair, the first taxi did leave sufficient room, they just chose a bad place to execute the overtake. The second taxi left me far too little room.)

I look forward to hearing the results of your investigations.

    Yours faithfully

    Greenroofer"

    Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to complain about the driving of Edinburgh Taxi number 1232 (SL61 BWF) on Princes Street at approx 8:50 am on 12/03/15. I have a video of the incident and it is uploaded at the following address

[+] Embed the video | Video DownloadGet the Video Widget

While waiting at the traffic lights at the junction of Princes Street and South St David Street, myself and another 3 cyclists (2 in front and one behind me) were waiting in the ASZ to proceed straight ahead, negotiating the tram tracks then onto the A1. While waiting here, two taxis were also in the right hand, right turn only lane to go down Waverley Bridge.

When the lights changed, we 4 bikes started off and the first taxi in the right hand lane did indeed go down Waverley Bridge. The second taxi (No 1232) proceeded straight and directly into the group of 4 bikes negotiating the tram tracks, the cyclists at the front even had to hold his hand up to stop the taxi trying to get in front of him.

In performing this dangerous maneuver, it shows a blatant disregard for the safety of more vulnerable road users, particularly when the taxi driver will be aware that bikes require greater room while near tram tracks. Should anyone have been caught on the tracks and fallen then there is no way this "professional" driver would have been able to stop in time to prevent a serious injury.

This driver, who I subsequently discovered to be a female with shoulder length blond hair, attempted to bully her way through a group of cyclists just so she could stop and turn off at Waverley Station, all of 5 seconds later.

I find the behaviour of this driver disgraceful and I'm sure that upon reviewing the video you will agree that this falls far short of the professionalism expected and required on Edinburgh's streets.

I look forward to hearing what actions you have taken against the driver and should you require any more information then please feel free to get back in touch with me.

    Regards

Had two people in yesterday saying they had been put off cycling to work because they have to cross the tram lines. Nice work!

I spoke to the guy at the front while we were waiting at the lights and when I said "What an idiot" he said "It's a taxi. What do you expect? There's nothing we can do about, just keep smiling and keep cycling.", which manages to be both optimistic and defeatist in the same sentence.

The thing is, that I ride along that road nearly every weekday and this "straight on from the right hand lane" is now the norm for taxis (and it really is just taxi's), to the point where I either have to sit in front of them in the ASZ and do it myself, or jump into the middle of the tracks as soon as I can to block getting squeezed later on. Why should I have to resort to performing bad maneuvers myself just to get enough room to be safe?

Keep smiling and keep cycling. :-|

The road on the right down to the station is closed to all but bicycles (unless now re-opened) so taxis will obviously be able to sit in the right turn lane but go straight ahead. Probably at every change of lights until the road reopens. Very bad.

That is indeed terrible driving, but also appalling road design. It's precisely where my wife was knocked off by a car recently - the driver was aggressively unrepentant when he stopped a matter of meters further on (not on account of knocking a cyclist off) blaming us for "swerving all over the road".

    Posted 9 years ago #
  21. @gembo Is it still open to bikes?

I was unaware of the closure last week and was in that lane on Princes Street to turn right. I only saw Road Closed signs, nothing about bikes. It was dark, I was tired mind you.

Couldn't even think of a diversion even if traffic on my left would let me in! Ended up walking my bike along WB to the taxi rank :-(

That bit of road is both terribly designed and driven with total disregard for the rest of humanity by black cabs. I almost found myself under the wheels of a following bus there earlier in the year when a taxi barged its way past in the dark and the rain as I attempted to negotiate the rails and forced me into an emergency foot-down stop on the kerb.

Just read that @edinburgh_taxis thread on Twitter. Appalling response, especially from a trade account. They should be ashamed of themselves. The footage clearly shows the cabbie cutting up the folk on bikes. UGH.

I hope the "great expense" is an allusion to the replacement cost of those disappearing bollards...
