@edd1e_h - so unbelievably frustrating having to reason with such eejits. I'm afraid no amount of rationalisation will change their view - I am attempting to try and let the resulting resentful feelings go.... somehow

Thanks algo for the kind words.

Yes, likewise, but sometimes you can't help yourself.
I should have let it pass* (after all people get tooted at all the time for no good reason, even when they are driving), but I must've got out of bed the wrong side today.
*No pun intended

@edd1e_h
Have you reported this to the council? licensing@edinburgh.gov.uk
Posted 8 years ago # -
@Frenchy
Not really serious enough to be worth reporting, I don't think. More of an annoyance than anything.
In any case, licensing still haven't responded to my previous complaint about a speeding taxi (see up-thread).

I disagree - they're likely to bring him in and explain that he's in the wrong. He's more likely to listen to his and other taxi drivers than cyclists on this matter.

This is completely unacceptable, and you should be chasing it up. I think I've generally had a "We will look into this" response within a day or two, and then a "We spoke to the driver, he will be more careful in future" response within a couple of weeks.Posted 8 years ago # -
Black Cab #597 / SL11 NVW.
1450 this afternoon, opposite The Witchery / Camera Obscura.
Mobile phone in right hand, plastic fork in left, large tupperware lunch on lap. Weaving through the tourist crowds.
He saw me trying to get a pic and speeded up.
Any point in reporting ?

Any point in reporting ?
Certainly does no harm, and creates a record in case other people report similar incidents. Or if he hits someone, there will be evidence that it's not a one-off, which will absolutely help the prosecution's case.

Long tailback on Myreside Road due to temp lights for the Royal Ed building work. I filter up the line cautiously, tucking in three cars back from the front. We wait and wait...
A member of the taxi community decides that red lights are a hindrance he don't need and revs his black cab angrily up the right hand lane towards the red light, clearly about to muscle his way through, and just as he reaches the light....comes nose to nose with a liveried police car.
I don't often applaud spontaneous situations on the road but I did there. Stern ticking off from the lady PC and allowed to go to the front of the queue. He hadn't actually gone past the light, so I guess I can't complain he wasn't hauled.

Taxi 657 attempting an overtake westbound on the approach to the build out on Sciennes Road. Despite my primary he continued to attempt it even through the build out and just laughed at my John McEnroe impression. The presence of a small child did nothing to quell his murderous instincts.

I hope you'll report.
It's a bad bit of road -

Sciennes Primary will try to get the road shut when the Sick Kids moves.
I'm sure taxi drivers (and some locals) will object.

Thanks chdot - yes I read your scary encounter. I will indeed report it....

Actually November's bad taxi driving, but I've only just received a response.
"Thank you for your below email. I am sorry for the delay in responding to this complaint.
I can confirm we have spoken with the driver and he has been given corrective advice about his driving.
A record of this complaint has been kept on the drivers’ file and can be referred to in the future if required. If we receive further complaint regarding this driver, we may refer him to committee for consideration of suspension or revocation of his licence."

"Private hire taxi S056 BJJ complaint; aggressive driving
At about 7pm on Sunday 20th Nov I was coming down Dundas St on my bike - downhill, moving fast, keeping up with traffic - when I heard a car horn behind me. Moments later, taxi SO56 BJJ performed an aggressive overtake, which was completely pointless as he then had to stop at the clearly visible red lights little more than a block ahead. Of course, within seconds I caught up with him. So he bullied and endangered me and achieved absolutely nothing. Please explain to this aggressive idiot that I have a right to be on the road without being intimidated."

"Good afternoon,
I have spoken with the Cab Inspector today regarding this complaint. Police Scotland are still making enquiries regarding this and have been delayed somewhat by not being able to get a hold of the driver.
They will continue to pursue this and I will be in touch as soon as any progress is made.
Thank you for patience regarding this.
Kind regards"
... only been two months and they cant get hold of the driver ?
nonsense

Actually a month ago, but have just heard back from the council after complaining.
The driver of a silver people carrier, YX62 VDY, turned right from the Mound to Princes St. This is bad enough, of course, but there were pedestrians crossing Princes St at the time.
"...the driver has been given corrective advice about his driving.
A record of this complaint has been kept on the drivers’ file...etc."

Taxi driver last night whose rear left indicator appeared to be "broken", and who pulled a very impressive confused face when this was pointed out to him.
Posted 7 years ago # -
In the space of 10 seconds this morning:
- taxi driver pulling a U-turn across me and other traffic out of the tank on Haymarket Terrace (despite the sign saying no u-turns)
- 2nd taxi driver turning right into the drop-off point at the station (despite that being banned)
- 3rd taxi driver turning right out of the drop-off point at the station (despite that being banned)

after over 3 months and constant chasing;
------------
The driver in question was spoken to on 10 January 2017 by phone and warned regarding his disregard towards the safety of others. An appointment was also made with the Cab Inspector to ensure the driver realises the seriousness of the situation. As yet the meeting has not taken place as the driver is on holiday but it will be scheduled. The incident has also been recorded for future reference.

Just saw some video footage on FB just now of a Black Cab deliberately swerving and knocking down a cyclist on North Bridge and driving off. Footage shows a heated discussion between them at a standstill, cyclist moves off, taxi drives right next to him, cyclist 'kicks out' at taxi, which them rams him and knocks him down.
Car behind filming it follows him down Leith Street and tries to get him to go to Gayfield but driver not interested saying 'he's got a fair', referring to the passenger in the cab.
Utterly shocking.
Posted 7 years ago # -
hmmm .. if filmed actually knocking him off then it's pretty much indefensible - regardless of cyclist actions.
assume reg plate is clearly visible ?

People-carrier #1147 seemed to take offence at me glaring at him when he tried to emerge from Albert Street into me, shouting something about a problem as he passed.
Posted 7 years ago # -
I had a blue black cab wait behind me in grass market this morn today until safe to pass and then turn left up Victoria St without cutting me up. Exceptional
Posted 7 years ago # -
Private hire cab #509 (silver estate) decided to give me some unsolicited "advice" at the Balgreen pedestrian crossing, by shouting out his window, "Pedestrian crossing is for pedestrians only". The light hadn't changed and he wasn't delayed at all.
Do taxi drivers think that shouting random irrelevant advice is good for business? Certainly I'm less inclined to use them now
Posted 7 years ago # -
I think taxi drivers are inwardly offended by people 'stealing their business' by self-transporting on foot or bike. It's the only thing that can explain their hostile words & actions to cyclists & pedestrians.
Posted 7 years ago # -
I wonder what sort of earnings percentile you need to be in to even contemplate using taxis for day to day transport rather than a 'treat' out of necessity like lugging bags to the train station/airport or a drunken trip home.

@klaxon - drug dealers, Tories like mcletchie, mcnasty etc. There will be tons more of this paid for by our council tax now the Tories have revealed themselves again.
Taxi drivers do seem quite desperate for business these days

Taxi drivers are often people who can't work in a team. They get lonely and odd as well due to solo working and monologuing.
One of my friends is a taxi driver.

@iwrats I have a pal who was a taxi driver for a while, after he came off his bike and battered the Tarmac at 30mph.
He listened to a lot of podcasts. Jim alkililil, prof Brian Cox, David sedaris, that sort of typical radio four stuff.
He has been out with us again on drops.
His wife is a tough broad
He has a personality which allowed him to cope with the southern general. Govan. When he was paralysed. In there, they have an actual car yu practice getting in and out of. Fiat panda. Parked in middle of gym.
The only other person wh walked from that ward used to hide from the nurses, he did not like. A catheter

My mate's wife once stabbed his motorbike to death.

@iwrats
I had a very bad friend at school. His mother, a saint. Gave him fair warning that she was selling the house and his Norton Dominator which was in pieces in the garage would be skipped unless he came for it. I imagine, the way he went on, that he is still bitter today about the loss of it. I think he had one go on it and so did I. Lovely bike, prone to mechanical failure, good name and nice golden colour but alas it did not work. Not cheap.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Great frames on Nortons. Engines prone to malfunction.
I still wonder at the fury required to disable a motorbike through undirected knife blows. I am very polite to his wife who quite like.
