I wonder if the taxi driver points this out to the significant number of car drivers who turn right at that spot!

on the plus side, i got an email from the taxi complaint person (enforcement officer), who has viewed the dashcam footage of my 'interaction' with a driver at the end of March. in very diplomatic language, he said i was right to be angry and the driver has had a telling off.

i would have liked to see the dashcam footage too, but ah well.

For future reference, you can ask to see it, but they can charge you £10 for the trouble (or this is true for Lothian Buses, it might be different for a taxi driver).

I was also recently made aware that complaints about taxi drivers can be made to: CabOfficeEdinburgh[at]scotland.pnn.police.uk

If you are referring to a Subject Access Request under the DPA, from 25th May they won't be able to charge.

Extraordinary. And I say that as a muti-decade Edinburgh commuter.

Heading down Lothian Road and fire engines start coming up the West Approach Road with blues and twos on the go.

Everybody starts to shuffle, wondering where the engines will go. They come down the green lane towards the West End. I hop on the pavement to clear the way and.....

A private hire cab nips into the lane to drop off a passenger. Repeat: a private hire cab nips into the lane to drop off a passenger. In front of an active fire engine.

The engine overtakes once it can, and...the cab advances to block the yellow box at Rutland Place, again blocking the engine. People are pointing and shouting. He backs into me. I overtake and shake my head, so he tries to ram me. I dodge him with ease.

Dude should be in the stocks for a day no doubt, or made to polish fire engines for a month.

Oocha. Worth reporting, if you haven't already. The fire service might well be doing so too, or could easily be contacted by the police to corroborate.

If the taxi lost a mirror then it should be possible for the police to track it down by digging around taxi repair companies. Even though the TX4 and its ancestors no longer have a monopoly on the taxi market, there's still only a few other models that can be licensed.

I don't know about Edinburgh, but in London a licensed taxi with damage like that would be taken off the road ASAP by the authorities. That used to be the case, anyway; cost-cutting may have impacted the effectiveness of such controls since I moved away from the Great Wen.

A PRIVATE hire driver has been suspended over claims he denied service to a Paralympic cycling champion and her guide dog at Edinburgh Airport

Got a seriously unpleasantly close punishment pass from taxi number 641 on St Leonards just now - I wasn't in the segregated cycle lane because I was going to turn right down Bernard Terrace. He shouted something about the cycle lane as he passed. I decided to stop and note down the number so he got out and started taking pictures of me claiming I was abusing him and I should have been in the cycle lane.

Bizarrely he then hailed the police to speak to them - they were understandably not in the slightest bit interested and I have no idea why he hailed them. I notice this cab has previous on this thread.

@algo A friend of mine had a similar experience there, but with a Lothian bus driver. I told her to report it to Lothian Buses, since they seem to take complaints seriously (Well, they acknowledge the complaint at least).

5 weeks ago I reported a taxi driver to the cab office (CabOfficeEdinburgh@scotland.pnn.police.uk), since he drove straight into the bike box on a red light, then drove through the junction when the cycle filter light came on, then went straight ahead from the right turn lane without indicating. I heard nothing for 2 weeks, so CC'd the council taxi licensing department (Who had previously just forwarded my requests to the cab office, which is why I thought I'd contact them directly and save 2 days of waiting), and asked for an update. I got a reply from Marcos from the council taxi licensing department, saying he'd follow it up. Heard nothing for another 2 weeks, so I replied again to ask if anything was happening. That was a week ago, so 5 weeks since the incident, and I've heard nothing.

Is there anything else I can do about this? I should perhaps have reported it via 101 in the first place, but the last time I did that, officers came to see the video and then said that there was nothing they could do and I should report it to the cab office...

thanks @gembo and @EdinburghCycleCam - I managed not to swear but I didn't present my case very coherently it must be said when he started taking pictures....

Have you any idea what the police actually said?

The Police really couldn't care less. They weren't in the slightest bit interested in the specifics - in their words "we were both probably at fault" and just told us to be on our way. I didn't expect much else though.

I finally got a reply from the council taxi licensing folk - unsurprisingly they're telling me to report via 101, which I'll do tonight. Though since it's now been 5-6 weeks since it happened, I fully expect them to say it's too late to do anything, in which case it'll just go on YouTube.

that's unfortunate. I reported dangerous driving to the city, and Marcos was the one who responded, inside a reasonable time frame. it didn't go to the police, but i didn't ask for that.

In fairness, I reported it to the cab office first, then CC'd the council taxi licensing department - so Marcos was just chasing up the cab office on my behalf.

Still, I guess in future I'll go to 101 first, so at least it can get logged correctly.

EDIT: And yeah, one reason I didn't report it to 101 first is that it wasn't criminally bad driving, just pretty inconsiderate. But since it's going through a red light, it's still a matter for the police apparently.

Dear Angry Taxi Driver outside Summerhall,

No, sticking your indicators on doesn't mean you can just pull into the cycle lane.

    Yours,
Cyclist who was in the cycle lane at the time.

To whom do I report Private Hire drivers? In particular the driver of LS59 LZV, Private Hire Car 1265, who thinks it is appropriate to close-pass a vulnerable road user while sounding their horn, while we were both doing about 25 mph down Lanark Road.
I caught the car up at the lights, of course, and got a photo of the rear plate, hence having all the details.

@Frenchy Saw the aftermath of a private hire taking out a scooter at Summerhall at the weekend. PH driver had "no idea how that happened". I didn't even see it and it was obvious from the way the scooter was jammed up against the guard rail.

@fimm PHs are the same as taxis in that regard:

I have had success with minor issues using email and including YT links for video. Never had to report anything major (life threatening).

What dougal said. I've reported taxi drivers on the phone and going through red lights to them as well, but in those cases they replied and said I need to report to 101 (Even though I know full well the police won't do anything without absolutely crystal clear video evidence).
I'm still waiting on the outcome of the last taxi driver I reported to the licensing department and then 101 actually - I'll chase that up today...

I have had some success with one taxi driver who parked in the middle of a junction on double yellows to set down passengers, instead of 10 metres forwards or back where he wasn't in the junction, and then screamed in my face when I said "10 out of 10 for a place to stop mate, well done" - he got summoned to a meeting with the licensing folk and got a warning on his record. I've also reported taxis ranking at the Balmoral twice, but both times have been told that the drivers said they weren't ranking, they were picking up pre-booked fares (yeah right, with their for hire lights on...)

Three van-type taxis ranking in the "TAXI DROP OFF ONLY" area out front of Haymarket station. Now, they may each have dropped a fare off there, but sitting staring out of the window* of your stationary taxi with the 'for hire' light on is no part of that permitted activity.

    * Assiduously avoiding eye contact with the grumpy old buffer muttering audibly about the iniquity of ranking other than in a permitted location.

That "drop-off only" area gets used for all sorts of stuff. Delivery lorries, rail-replacement buses. The police use it as a convenient parking area as well.

Private Hire in the (operational) Bus Lane.

    I'm content with this response.

"I have traced and spoken with the driver who says he is unable to recall this. I have explained to him that a photo of him driving in the bus lane has been provided and that the complaint made against him is entirely plausible. I asked him to offer an explanation for driving in the bus lane and a reason why this complaint would be fabricated, but he was unable to do so.

As such I have recorded this complaint on his record and shall refer to this in the future fi required."
