Upsala Nya Tidning - Sweden. The city council of Uppsala approved a new bicycle policy on Monday aimed above all at improving the infrastructure for cyclists. The city is on the right path, the independent daily Upsala Nya Tidning writes:
"How do you get more people to use bikes? A car-free city centre is a fine goal, but the bicycle can't always replace the car. The public transport system has to be improved as well. ... The car is important for most people, but car-based mobility is reaching its limits. In big cities many people are deciding not to buy a car. ... The trend toward overcrowding and more urbanity - even outside the city centres - is also making itself felt in Uppsala. The old through-streets are being turned into pedestrian shopping streets. ... This is an important change that makes the city a more exciting place to live. And in this new city the bike is becoming an ever more important means of transport." (31/10/2013) +++
