public cycle counter going in on mmw
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 16years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

The one with the big LED display? Hurrah! Going to cycle up and down MMW all day in celebration ;)
Looking forward to it. Let's hope it (a) works and (b) doesn't catapult people off their bikes :-)
Lets hope that some rent-a-cyclist from City Chambers doesn't turn up, get a bike out the boot of the limo and get to be first to ride over it!
They should have had a schools competition for the privelege of being #1.
Had a chat with the manager of the company contracted to put it in (he's a cyclist himself). I knew there were others going in elsewhere but I had not appreciated that the one down in Leith nr the govt offices will be a 'master' counter which compiles data from all the other counters around Scotland.

this story says the master counter will be at Edinburgh quay on the union canal.
Cool :-) wonder if they'll see an upsurge on PY mornings! :-D
Is there a link to the counters online yet? Maybe it should be a sticky here?
SRD, the article says that the master counter will be at Victoria Quay in Leith, not on the canal. I am likely to be crossing both Edinburgh counters twice daily assuming that the counter on the canal is positioned optimally...
I hope Peter Maxwell from SPOKES was misquoted, as pointing out how to abuse the counters doesn't really strike me as a good idea.
@jdanielp so there are three in Edin? union canal at edinburgh quay, MMW, and the master at Victoria quay?
that makes more sense.
As I understood the article, the only master display is going to be located at Victoria Quay (presumably outside the Government buildings there), which will display live totals from all nine of the counters in Scotland (two of which are in Edinburgh), but it will not have a counter.
The need one on the Burnshot junction! Most cycles pass over Cramond Brig, with some going over the new Cramond Bridge.
Shame they're locating one at Edinburgh Quay as I'm presuming it's going to be up beside Cargo. If they had positioned it down at the entry/exit of the Union Canal beside the Leamington Lift Bridge they would have go a whole lot more traffic.
@ianfieldhouse yeah, that's what I meant by 'positioned optimally', but as you say Edinburgh Quay suggests that it will be right at the end of the canal, in which case it will miss a huge number of journeys, including mine.

"4:50pm I'll be talking electronic public display cycle counters on @BBCRadioScot @BBCDavidMiller

@morningsider doubtless he meant it as a joke and didn't appreciate how it would sound in print in a newspaper.
SRD - probably true, typical EEN.
If anyone says that these are a waste of cash then it would be worth pointing out that theere are over 1300 traffic counters on the trunk road network (although they don't have public displays) and lots more on the local roads network. Very useful for policy makers and people who plan roads maintenance.
Tune in now..
Right... I did see the wires going in but no sign appeared. I should register at least four trips a day!
I'll have a look tomorrow but, from the description, it looks like I'll go within a few meters of this twice a day and never be counted.
Looks like 5 months after the counter loops went in they were installing the actual counter this morning.
That's speedy progress!
PoP tomorrow? Edinburgh Council in the cycling Spotlight? Coincidence?
folks who were doing the original installation weren't council - they were doing all of them everywhere.

(It's the right way up on flickr. no idea how to fix. sorry!)
Australian council?
Yes, we were watching them from PY and remarking that if the counter is turned on by tomorrow it will get a nice bump start....
Ctrl + Alt + <Down arrow>?
No. 2 in Glasgow this afternoon (may not get wired up today).
8 more throughout Scotland sometime!
They're clearly looking to bank all the POPists in order to claim a massive upswing in cycling numbers in Edinburgh...
It will certainly be a test of how it deals with more than one bike passing at the same time!
