@west_team who is responsible for the A90 cycle path maintainance between Dalmeny & Cramond Brig pls?

    west_team
@DaveC This is in the West area but what it the issue as may be our colleagues in the Cycling Team who deal? Thanks ^G

    DaveC
@west_team North of Burnshot Junction, cycle path covered in recent cuttings and fallen leaves forcing cyclists onto busy A90 Offramp.

@DaveC I will pass to our Task Force and ask them to clear up ^G

    @DaveC
@west_team Many thanks. For future ref, is there an online form I can fill in for these things? It appears there is no regular maintainance.

    ‏west_team
@DaveC Unfortunately not on Twitter or no generic e-mail account. You can sent to us or westteam@edinburgh.gov.uk and we can forward

    west_team
@DaveC Afraid not but I will raise your concerns with Environment Manager ^G4

    Dave_C
@west_team Strange as @fifeCouncil have online reporting for infrastructure problems. http://www.fifedirect.org.uk/lagan/roadfault/ … Why doesn't EdinburghCC?

Anyone else riding in on the A90 path either way, feel free to tweet or email this problem. Weight in numbers remember.

@DaveC you can use the "fixmystreet" sites to report problems online. It passes your reports direct to Clarence who file it on to the relevant team. I've had a reasonable success rate using it, get a response about 50% of the time from a named "responsible "individual. Sometimes they just fix it and never get back. Other time they just ignore...

Could do with some reflective strip on the fence posts just after the area mentioned above as on way home its hard to see them (even with bright light on bike) especially if another cyclist coming the other way.

Does the Cooncil ever sweep up the leaves on paths? There are places (eg, the path between the Barnton Aveneues) where the leaves are pretty greasy and could easily an incident.

CEC have made good progress with their mini-gritting-tractors in the winter. It would also send a really strong message if they swept up the Autumn leaves on the off-road paths too.

I've kind of given up on the paths at Barnton and NEPN - prefer to take my risk on Ferry Road until ~February.

Still need to do the A90 path north of Cramond, unfortunately.

@skotl. Try turning right at the A90 / Burnshot flyover into Dalmeny estate. Down the hill and follow the road to the house where you take the road up the hill to return to Main Street junction with the old A90, where the current road closure is. No leaves on the road, just a few sheep.

Riding down the A90 this evening I was virtually blind riding along next to the dual carrageway!

How bad is the new section , in terms of being dazzled, compared to when it was below road level with a wall between riders and cars? I don't often ride there in the dark so I can't compare.

Thanks @DaveC - may try that tomorrow.

As you and @Focus say, it was a nightmare tonight, especially with the rain on me glasses. I ended crawling along at ~3mph because I couldn't be sure whether there was anything coming toward me on the path.

Reply from the councilor chdot advised me to contact:

This is from someone at Edinburgh City council.

Thank you for your email, I will arrange for our Task Force to clean up this area ASAP. I understand that we recently asked the Estate team to cut back some overgrowing vegetation, it could be the legacy of that.
    Regards,

So it looks like the estate are cutting back but not clearing up after themselves.

It was very wet lastnight, and the light from approaching vehicles meant I was effectively blind. I had to slow right down to a nr walking pace.

I went through fifebound at 13:30 and they've driven a leaf sucker through, as far northbound as the road closed signage. Its done well in removing all the leaf mulch.

Well played, DaveC - swift response there which i presume was specifically due to the councillor's intervention.

It hasn't picked up any of the broken glass, etc - only leaf mulch - so if you're continuing the dialogue with the councillor, perhaps mention that as an outstanding issue and ask if they'd support the introduction of a scheduled path maintenance programme, due to the path debris caused by the heavy volume of adjacent motor traffic? fortnightly perhaps?

    I'll chip in myself, naturally.

Has it removed any of the heavier branch debris left from the cutting back by the estate workers?

    EDIT:
Let me know exactly where the broken glass is - or is it very small pieces strewn the whole length - and I'll run a brush over.

The broken auto glass is on the B924 path, strewn across half the width of the path (the half nearest the road)

If you're going northbound its before the hill starts proper, very near the first pole sign that's flush to the estate wall, a wee bit further on after the bus stop.

Glad to see prompt action taken against a complaint :-)

    @ DaveC

Good for you. But make sure you do it properly, like a real contractor:

You'll need to put up an excessive amount of barriers, divert cyclists via an inconvenient route and stand looking at the glass for at least 20 minutes before sweeping any away.

I'm sorry that means an earlier start for you, but that's the way the cookie crumbles! ;-)

Took @DaveC's path this morning, over the road at Dalmeny high street, into the estate, along the coast and back up to Burnshot.

    ...

    ...

    ...

Flipping heck! These are some hills!

I did the estate this morning but couldn't face it tonight. Benefited from the clearance (thanks to all who reported it).
I don't think I'm fit enough (yet) to make the Dalmeny estate a permanent part of my commute.

Meanwhile, in a new post on the A90 path that I'm about to add...

About the horse manure on the A90 path (new section).

Given this is a concrete section, and no earthen bridleway to facilitate decomposition, who's actually responsible for dealing with it?

Is the horse rider responsible in the same way as might be expected of dog walkers ?

Would council west team be responsible?

Will we just be dodging horsesh1t for a few months?

I don't recall seeing hourse manure on the path, though I was wet, cold and battling the wind.

Unlike Dog deposits, horses manure is wholy plant material, and has no paracites, so they don't have to remove them. I could be wrong, after reading something about horses on the Peebles - Innerlethen path last year.

If it gets bad I'd report it to the council.

Its been there since the weekend and nicely spread out!
Its not the sort of path you'd expect a horse to be taken on, especially with the volume of noise from the traffic

So long as you stay to the left (heading to Fife) then you'll be fine.

Horse manure is part of being in the countryside, one of the healthy and hearty aromas you can experience along with cow dung, pig sties and muck spreading. Not really a hygiene issue and unless the piles of dung are very big, not really a skid hazard either.

Dog mess on the other hand is the spawn of Satan, a very real biohazard and smells horrible. Basically, if the creature eats meat, the poo is potentially dangerous; if it's a herbivore, usually harmless.

Its easy enough to dodge with no oncoming cyclist in the mix, but the spread is not inconsiderable, meantime.

Wouldn't like to ride straight through it all.

I hand wash my tyres on sundays... but helpfully i can now console myself that "its only a harmless herbivore, no sweat"

    cheers !
