Is anyone on this site seriously thinking/arguing that it was the Government's intention in the access code to allow pavement cycling?

Since there have been some fines issued since 2003, and no hot shot lawyer ((c) Daily Mail ) has got anyone off a ticket, I think we can safely say that it remains still a civil offence.

On way home this evening saw plod had stopped a cyclist with no rear light at end of George IV Bridge. Good. There is no excuse. But for the hard of thinking at the EEN, if it generated profits for the police, wouldnt this be a 52 week campaign?

"that it was the Government's intention in the access code to allow pavement cycling?"

I suspect that, in general, urban areas weren't thought about too much.

It certainly was the case that people involved in the process (lots of genuine local consultations looking at paths that should be Core) thought that there would be money to implement/improve/sign etc.

I have to admit my views on pavement cycling have changed somewhat since I went back to Livingston for my infra blog.

Livingston is the 2nd largest population centre in the Lothian's, and you can cycle more or less where you want without fear of prosecution. No-one seemed to be in conflict, and peds and cyclists seemed to interact seamlessly on the paths.

It struck me then given the tiny size of our country, and low population density, that there are really only a dozen or so towns and cities in this country where pavement cycling could conceivably cause an issue. Of course Edinburgh is one of them, and I certainly wouldn't advocate pavement cycling in a busy built up area like Edinburgh.

But on this road here (google street view link), with it's blind corners and 50mph speed limit, if any Policeman stopped me here (and I cycle on this pavement relatively often), well I'm afraid I'll be giving it the "This is a 'core' path officer, and my being here is perfectly responsible" speech...

But Baldcyclist, just as Livingston's example champions mid-density sharing, there are a few cities in France that do the same trick in streets busier than Edinburgh's. It's a heartening sight! You do reach a point where it's quicker walking, of course.

  5. With EEN headlines like that, carefully designed to stoke up yet more anti-cycling hatred & bile, I'm stunned that anyone from the cycling community still talks to the rag. You just know they'll spin any story to paint us as the bad guys, and if one of us gets killed they'll leave the comments open on the story to let the morons post insensitive, hateful drivel. (As they did with the Audrey Fyffe stories).

"Similarly, we will be stopping drivers that don’t give cyclists enough leeway."

There aren't enough officers in the whole of Scotland to do that effectively!

As for that headline, the fuel to the fire we've come to expect from the chipwrapper. Their most vocal commenters are anti-cyclist so they need to pander to that element of their readership.

I can't tell you how heartbroken I am whenever I read stories about the EEN desperately shedding jobs and being on the edge of bankruptcy.

Baldcyclist, I got into a heated discussion with an idiot pedestrian at about 6.45 this morning at South Gyle Access. He was walking from Makro direction, I (having pathed it from Stenhouse as usual) had crossed the 'temporary' crossing and turned left to continue my journey along the path to Edinburgh Park.

Said bozo stepped into my path (deliberate) then noting I was not stopping, said 'not dismounting then?'

This rather quickly descended into an 'you are all the same, cyclists - always speeding round corners, knocking people over' type of chat.

I did laugh in his face when he said he was a 'bicyclist' and we all needed lessons in 'controlling our cycles'.

However, I guess it does make the point well - this is a 10 yard piece of 'pavement' which I have no choice but to ride on (if they fixed the crossing lights, I would happily use the proper toucan which will be part of the shared use path).

Until the council / tram infra bods / whoever, actually give me the ability to go from my house to office without having to renegotiate all sorts of badly thought out and dangerous junctions - I will do as you do in Livi - i.e. generally be law abiding, but (exceptionally, and where forced) I will go wherever I please within reason.

While I am ranting, there is another we have discussed here once or twice - Eltringham Terrace to Robbs Loan - I hop on the pavement for 5 yards every day both ways, and have never knocked down an old lady.

If they put a cut through, I would use it - they dont, so I go on the pavement.

World of difference in my opinion to bampots harassing people on pavements just for the hell of it.

@Nelly having just checked, it's on the Core Path map (route CEC13) so you were perfectly entitled to some responsible cycling there.

I make use of that cut-through at Eltringham too. My logic is that a car has to cross a pavement to get form one facility it's allowed to use (road) to another (private driveway), so to heck with the precise wording of the law. I've never knocked down an old lady there either. In fact I don't think I've ever seen one in 2 or 3 years of going that way.

cheers andy - yes, I forgot it was you who introduced me to that route!

Good spot on the CEC13, ta - might see the chap tomorrow and let him know ;-)

I couldn't bring myself to wade through all the comments but the latest one had me stifling laughter at the thought of some little fool frothing at the mouth whilst typing this:

"Edinburgh has become an absolute joke!!!! They should take away at least 50% of the traffic lights to get the traffic moving!!! People don't use them anyway, everyday i get some clown walk in front of the car and they EXPECT me to stop/slow down for them!!! Get rid of most of they horrible patch work speed bumps and fix the roads!!! They are a shambles!!! We don't want stupid trams, the roads aren't wide enough for them!!!! Don't even want to start on cyclists!!!!! They should just be banned altogether from the roads!!! With their silly flashing lights and yellow jackets!!!! And all the sad jobsworths that come on here and complain about speed and how important is for health and safety and all that nonsense need to look in the mirror and give themselves a good slap!!!!! you people have ruined this once great city!!!!"

Does someone perhaps have anger management issues? :-D

Is anyone on this site seriously thinking/arguing that it was the Government's intention in the access code to allow pavement cycling?

But the cumulative mileage of pavements that have been turned into cycle facilities with or without signage is already huge? (For instance: feel free to find any signage at all on this cyclepath, the only clue is the cycle crossing lights)

The Core Paths are a mechanism to define, well, core routes over which access is guaranteed even by bike. It explicitly overrules the law on pavement cycling.

True, we can't really say that the Scottish Government had that in mind - it seems unlikely given their poor achievements for cyclists otherwise.

If I could face a bus trip to Glasgow (and I can't), it would be worth some GPS logging of their in-town speeds.

You don't need to go all the way to Glasgow of course. Not sure how a part fare is calculated these days, but when I was using the the service on and off about 15-18 years ago I think it made economical sense to use it as a quick bus into the centre from the suburbs (and many people did).

    @ Gresham Flyer

"Does someone perhaps not recognise sarcasm when they see it?"

Frankly, half of what you read in the Chipwrapper's comments sections could be taken as sarcasm if it weren't so prevalent, so it needs to be better done than that one to be convincing as such.

And trust me, I can do sarcasm with the best of them (though not on that rag's website as I would never sign up to an Edinburgh newspaper's website that would have me as a member) ;-)

Just ask my girlfriend, her parents, my mother...

Actually, don't ask my mother, her Alzheimer's has unleashed a sarcastic tone I don't even think she would've known she was capable of!

Has anyone seen any polis on cycle patrol this week?

Have been keeping an eye out as I cross town, but no sightings yet.

Saw a couple pootling along Shandwick Place towards Princes St, at about 1pm today. They weren't nicking anybody at the time.

@ Focus - Agreed, the comment is poorly done sarcasm - but still not an authentic rant - either a troll trying to get a rise or someone parodying a typical rant. The latter being a risky practice as some readers will just have their own nasty prejudices confirmed.

Two police cyclists and one on a motorbike going down Forrest Road. Bit of banter going on.

    Passed two on MMW yesterday.

Lots of fire appliances and ambulances, but for some reason I haven't seen a police car, bike or foot patrol for about a week.

Which makes me think maybe they are nearby but obviously they aren't visible enough. Maybe they should be forced to have their lights flashing at all times.

    You know...for their own safety.

Spoke with a couple of cycle cops this afternoon as will be seen on my video if I can get it to upload to Youtube. Grrr! (at Youtube, not the cops!).

    Posted 11 years ago #
  25. Nelly, I think your pal from yesterday was in action this morning - someone's pulled one of the temporary barriers down at the corner before the infamous middle-of-the-path junction boxes, blocking the path (I moved it a little to get by) and pulled another one across so that there's just room for a thin person to squeeze through beside the junction boxes.

Two cycle cops at the corner of Canning Street and Shandwick Place. They pulled over a lady who had turned up Canning Street - as I write she is getting a talking to.

Could not believe the number of motorists driving without lights in semi-darkness this morning. Just staggering. I lost count. The polis would have had their work cut out this morning I would have thought. And that isn't even mentioning the ones with a broken light.

Strangely enough, the last time I saw cycle police was in the vicinity of Glasgow Sheriff Court. I had to make space to let them through as they cycled past me on the pavement!

(The road was cobbled, maybe it was just comfier to cycle on the pavement.)

Saw two polis this morning who, while they were not actually cycling, had yellow bibs and helmets on and were standing next to two bikes by the clock at Tollcross. Had made my decision that I could just get through the lights on orange before I saw them, and although they glared at me they either agreed with me, or decided that cycling up hill along Lauriston Place wasn't their idea of fun.
