Nope. One male with a bike and one female who drove in a marked Ford Focus estate blocking the path.

I agree with DdF. ASLs have problems but they are better than nothing.

Dave Brennan is (IIRC) a steely thighed recumbonaut who has no difficulty accelerating through junctions. He doesn't need ASLs. On the whole I do and I am not particularly slow.

    Agree.

YDRC (You Don't RC ;) ). He is fairly rapid, but doesn't race or anything, and is decidedly upright.

I also agree with DdF (and Min and chdot).

    David B rides an upright.
It is one of the Daves on here who rides a recumbent.

[Why, on a forum where most people use a pseudonym, do two of the few people who choose to use (part of) their real name, both have to be called Dave? It is most confusing...]

Oh odd. I was sure he rode a recumbent! Who is the Weegie with a recumbent then? :-?

    The rest still stands though!

Shall I change my username to uprightDave? Perhaps Dave Mc Can become recumbentDave?

@fimm, You have met me (and Dave) on the Snowroads, how can you confuse us both?

It is worth reading the original source "the spawn of Satan" comment http://www.magnatom.net/2012/01/advanced-stop-lines-spawn-of-satan.html and see it in context, the blog post was to some extent tongue in cheek and was pointing out that ASLs are a particular hazard to less experienced cyclists who might not see that dangers. After all, we told that:
    "
Use cycle routes, advanced stop lines, cycle boxes and toucan crossings unless at the time it is unsafe to do so. Use of these facilities is not compulsory and will depend on your experience and skills, but they can make your journey safer.
    "
    HC Rule 61

When in fact that most experienced cyclist recognise that a great many "of these facilities" are badly designed and down right dangerous.

The video in that ASL post come from a guy on a recumbent!

I must have assumed it was Magnatom.

Perhaps Dave Mc Can become recumbentDave?

No he can't, we'd get him confused with Laidback.

    NO! - extra confusion.

There are actually 10 CCEers with Dave in their username!

    DB isn't one of them!!

@DaveC because I am easily confused.

I have mixed feelings about ASLs. I do agree with what magantom and others say about them - and I am pretty sure that the Dutch started out putting them in but now see them as inadequate infrastructure and are removing them (if there are any left).

On the other hand, they are about the only bit of infrastructure that we get, and so I do understand why cyclists feel strongly when they are abused.

Min, you say you "need" ASLs. Can you expand on that a bit - any specific examples? Not trying to start an argument, just curious.

Yes, if I am not at the front I can't accelerate up to the speed of a motor vehicle and get through the junction before they all start driving over me to turn left.

@Min, at what junctions does this happen to you?

I guess I'm spoiled as I don't have to commute through/into central Edinburgh at rush hour. There are a couple of places where the lack of an ASL means I don't filter, but neither of those are in Edinburgh, and I don't actually think that cyclists have an absolute right to filter (though the ability to filter is one of the good things about being on a bike).

I've found my self in the past making routing decisions based on permeablitiy. For example when I lived up Drum Brae I'd avoid the roundabout becuase it took so long to get down the hill as you'd either sit inhaling fumes or walk...

Passed a couple of officers on foot on the Roseburn Viaduct at 08:48 and exchanged a "Morning" with them. No idea if they were patrolling or just going from A to B. Nice to see a presence though.

I was about to chip in with Dave (Magnatom's) ASL post.

    But SRD got there first...

In any case, Magnatom's flowchart is pretty much the way I see ASLs, so that I (including when slow with the children) will only be using them if we can:

    1) Get to them safely before the lights change again.

    2) Actually gain by them - i.e. there's no point if we're going to be through the lights on the next phase in any case. Much better to be in the flow, rather than "forcing" more drivers to overtake than necessary.

So I'm with SRD and Min, that sometimes they're useful, but I'm with Magnatom in that I'd really rather something that was useful under all circumstances (i.e. proper Dutch segregation with appropriate priority, etc).

    Robert
(who's currently frustrated by being apparently ineffectual in all aspects, including cycle campaigning - is it possible to make a difference anywhere?)

@Min, at what junctions does this happen to you?

Any junction which has a left turn available to motorists behind or a right turn to those coming towards me. Which is almost all of them.

The only one where I don't normally use the ASL is the one going north to South Bridge (at Chambers Street). This is because it is really far back and I don't have time to get across before drivers coming the other way start trying to plough into me. So I tend to stay back and use vehicles in front as sweepers to clear the road ahead for me. It is downhill so I can keep up.

lol. This thread puts me in mind of the Python sketch with all the guys called Bruce. Except that's really going to cause even more confusion, so I'll stop there...

I see that the campaign is having some difficult getting through to all drivers, Why didn't they ticket this one?

I don't know why the picture isn't resizing to fit the space, maybe @chdot could do something with it.

I have tweeted it to @EdinburghPolice but they haven't responded yet. Not sure how to go about a more formal complaint, but maybe I should, after all they made a big thing of the annual crackdown.
