    Hi,

My headset tube has come away from the lug at the bottom end of the headset tube (above the fork).

It started off as an annoying creaking sound a few weeks ago, and it's now clear that the join, which was originally brazed, has come loose. The steering tube inside and everything else about the bike is okay.

Does anyone have any advice about this? Is it unsafe to ride the bike in this condition? It's a steel frame Robin Williamson singlespeed from mid 80's.

    Cheers,

    James

Here's an image to hopefully make things clearer:

I wouldn't like to say its categorically unsafe but I'd not ride it! Should be an easy fix for someone who know there way round a brazing torch.

Great thanks, I have lots of bike shops around here (Stockbridge), so might ask if they could do this

I know that Graeme at Harts Cyclery (Corstorphine) has been doing his own steel frames recently so probably has the knowledge and tools to do some brazing for you.

Ask a cycle shop if they can effect a repair (or sell you sa new one)? Good luck, I'd say. The cost may be the price of a new frame. Unless its a special rear frame, I'd just get one of the deals from one of the online shops, like Spa Cycles or PlanetX etc...

I'd consider the frame to be a write off. It may be possible to fix it but I'd be concerned that if that happened to the heatube what other lurking problems might there be?

I popped into the bicycle repair man today (South Clerk Street) who recommended Hendersons in Meadowbank, saying he could fix this no problem. Will update with an outcome.

    "recommended Hendersons"

    Forgot about them -

Usually think of them for powdercoating.

    Hi there,

Don't remember getting an email about this! Just to say that, ultimately, it's not really dangerous on a lugged frame like that - it's not going to go anyehere as the lug collar is still wrapped round the head tube. Probably creaks a bit though!

You probably need it welded, but we're only brazing at the moment so wouldn't do it here. Any decent Blacksmith should be able to do a neatish weld for you; however, you tend to find that welding just shifts the stresses elsewhere and you'll get another crack.

I had an almost identical crack in an old steel frame, got it welded and then the exact same crack appeared on the opposite of the headtube (it's currently in a refit to be my bike fitting bike :) )

Henderson's is certainly a good bet for refinishing. I use a auto painter I know for my frames but I still have to use Henderson's for blasting. A guy brought a frame in here recently blasted and finished by them and it looks very good.

Further to my last, depending on how valued the frame is to you, the other alternative it rebraze/solder an entire new headtube in. That's perfectly doable. I've got Reynolds headtube kicking around. Still need refinishing etc.
