I'm supposed to be doing a DIY 200k audax on Tuesday, so checked the forcast and now having second thoughts.

Wind turning round to become a nor'westerly. Daytime temperature down to 2 or 3 centigrade, night temperature below zero. It will at least be dry, and I've plenty woolies and thick gloves. I'm more worried about frost and ice which will be a potential hazard I reckon.

Monday and Wednesday look your best bet, little frost tomorrow morning but frost for sure tues and thurs, by the look, some snow and cold north wind so chill factor high.

Have new buff, so expect the other tree will now turn up.

Problem is that only Tuesday is really feasible for me. Forecast for week after looks even colder...

I love it when it gets chillier - spending a lot of time in the open wearing just a few layers of lycra, with quite a lot of windchill, I don't mind the cold.

Sitting just now for the Monday morning coffee, all the admin staff were asking how I could just be happy in a t-shirt (and jeans, before you ask) whilst they had sweaters and multiple layers on

Normally I'm quite happy when it's bright and dry but chilly. The run out to Biggar should be fine if cold. The only thing giving me pause for thought tomorrow is the route out of Innerleithen, up through Glentress and over the hills, then a fast descent on the northern side down to the A7. Unlikely to have been reached by the sun and therefore potentially icy.

Other than that should be fine, though I'll probably do a slightly longer route via A roads in East Lothian out to Dunbar to steer clear of frost and ice.

Well I've decided to give audaxing a miss for today. I'm sure it will be a lovely crisp day, but the frost looks fairly heavy even here near the coast. In Lanarkshire and the Borders it won't get above zero until nearly midday, so the risk of ice on fast descents has put me off.

I'll try Sunday instead.....at least the bike's prepped and I've found all my colder weather gear!

Wimped out of cycling this morning as I didn't fancy cycling. Now I'm on a busy slow moving bus wishing I'd taken the bike. It's cold, but layered up I think it would be fine

Small patches of frost on the southside pavements and canal, moreso around Wester Hailes. Frozen puddles the main risk.
With the right clothing, a lovely bright day.

Broomhouse path was frosted right over, frozen puddles in the usual spots.

    "Er, is that wise?"

Possibly not, but at least it would be hilariously entertaining, and Scrat would be absolutlely fine!

I found myself doing up my winter jacket all the way to the top, closing the ventilation zips, and briefly regretting wearing my 'inner' Altura gloves instead of the windproof 'outer' gloves this morning, although my hands did acclimatise eventually... Other than that is was very nice, although I took it easy over the frost.

I peered nervously round the curtains this morning but the world outside looked dry, so the risk of black ice seemed minimal, so I had a lovely ride to work in beautiful sunshine. Cold ears though.

Numpty decided to cycle all the way this morning. Thought 2 pairs of socks would be fine so didn't bother with overshoes.

By 15 miles I couldn't feel my feet, and by 20 miles the pain was unbearable. I arrived at work a groaning mess, may I reiterate... Numpty!!

Luckily I keep a spare pair of socks at work, so it will be 3 pairs on the way home. Oh, I'll have my shoe covers on tomorrow!

Aye, I can imagine. I had two pairs of socks lined up (one woolen hiking variety) plus overshoes but was concerned I'd get frozen feet. Windchill at even 10mph cycling speed takes 1 centigrade down to -6 or -7!

My feet were fine in Bridgedale active/cycling socks and my Clarks urban shoes. My exposed ears did get chilly so I may try making use of a new buff that someone gave me.

In an absolute paddy this morning as I couldnt find my skull cap, first time I've needed it this year. Thoughts of frostbite on my ears forced me to rummage through entire wardrobe at 6am this morning where it was found stuffed in the back pocket of a gillet not used since last year. Nice and toasty ride all the way in!

Moral? Always prepare the night before!!

Re: multiple pairs of socks, I think I read, most likely on here, that's not such a good idea, something to do with no air to circulate and thus keep feet warm? Overshoes are better?

Still on the gatorskins - no point in having studlies unless it stays cold and there is precipitation.

'Feels like -5' is perfectly pleasant as long as no snow/ice or wind.

Only a 5 mile cycle for me so I'll stick to my shorts. Think I'll go by road though rather than cycle path as at least that will have been gritted.

@weiss, it helps if you have a pair of shoes half a size larger than normal, to fit chunky socks into. Then you feel the warmth of the woollens.

-3.5C here... clear skies and nippy!

My ears were stinging last night, the buff may soon be called upon.

Big bike commute today. Lovely morning. Hands were rather cold when I arrived, and the office, which has felt warm all week, feels chilly and I'm cursing my stupidity at not bringing a warmer top.

Only spotted a couple of frozen puddles by the road. Took all corners cautiously, all the same. As others have said, the roads are dry.

Same story in the Grange and Marchmont, dry roads and nippy; I took the corners slowly just in case though; and I wore my big warm woolly hat for the first time this winter. (And I just wrote "this winter" for the first time this winter, too)
