Only in the US of A.

I remember asking our host when we stayed just outside Sacramento how easy it would be to get a train to San Francisco (which was the next leg of our honeymoon).

She laughed and said Americans dont get trains, the trains just dont go where you want to go (!), I dont think I even know if there is a train station in Sacramento that connects to central San Fran.

I asked a few more people and got lots of laughs.

I wouldnt be laughing if that freeway section in your link was built round here.

You were misinformed, I think. There are regular trains to Oakland, just across the bay from SF - you get a connecting bus or BART to get into central SF.

The Louisville story seems to belong to a roadbuilding era that we might have thought was long past. In SF, after public outcry as long ago as the 1960s, a lot of proposed freeways were cancelled, the freeway along the waterfront was cancelled after only a short section had been built, and eventually that and quite a lot of other sections of elevated freeway were torn down completely.

"It was reduced from an original width of 23 lanes to 18 because of funding issues. But even at 18 lanes, it will be a 325-foot wide expanse, slicing through downtown neighborhoods."

    Just..wow.
