chdot: if I ran into a significant sum of money, I'd open a coffee/beer/cake/bike shop in Slateford. Apart from Loudon's in Fountainbridge, I don't think there's any sort of coffee shop wider out of the city on Slateford Road.

Thanks for the tips, gembo. A good selection of craft beer is my personal priority but appreciate good cake is also a priority. :)

Earl of Marchmont next to Laidbacks emporium now sells a range of cake bars / flapjacky type things.

Usually 2 or 3 real ales on tap plus the usual eurofizz lager and cider type stuff.

[sexist comment alert]They also have Winter Pimms and other warm drinkies served in teacups, presumably to cater for the ladies?[/sexist comment alert]

I do not like Pimms but a whisky with lemon, honey and hot water is the toddy for me. Prefer mug to teacup tho.

Anyhoo the imagined emporium needs to sell proper cake and proper beer

I am wondering if really a cake shop that then buys say Williams Brother's range of bottled beers might be able to offer what is needed ahead of a pub that maybe tries cupcakes or tray bakes etc. Cakes are possibly more an individual thing than beer. I'm not saying this is a universal fact, more a pensee for discussion?
