I do notice that one of the alterations is to un-block and repair the stained glass windows and add skylights. But yes, you're right, a cinema is not really designed to be light and airy (something which the Standing Order does quite well, despite it being a crummy drinking establishment)

would be good if they put on movies like Stewarts used to do

I can see why the proposals don't cause any issue from a listed building perspective, but hopefully acquiring the change of use permission will be more challenging...

Balls. Just had an email notification from the Cooncil:
Further to your comments on the above application, I am writing to inform you that it is to be considered at the Council’s Development Management Sub-Committee on 14.01.2015. It is recommended that this application be Granted.I doubt there's much chance that the sub-committee will ignore the recommendation... Another massive pub added to Lothian Road, and the permanent loss of a decent mid-sized music venue.

Will be interesting to hear from Police Scotland why they're keener on a big pub opening @ 7am rather than a live music venue. #PictureHouse"

This made me :D
I read somewhere else that it was going to be recommended that Wetherspoon's application to turn Jimmy Chung's on Waverley Bridge into a pub be granted. Just to show I have nothing/little against Wetherspoons per se I'm pretty meh about that.

According to an article in the 'Evening News', the Police response to the possibility of a so called 'super-pub' is that it would be less likely to generate antisocial behaviour than did the nightclub that was there before. They have indicated that the terms of the way they were consulted made it difficult for them to respond in full.
All of that is just how I personally read the article, which you all may well already have seen, but here is a link:
http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/politics/eric-milligan-shocked-by-police-super-pub-stance-1-3663205As a local resident, I have sometimes felt intimidated when passing the Picture House when it was a nightclub, though I've no way of knowing if those patrons have ever been amongst the rowdy crowds keeping me awake! From my own experience of using other Wetherspoons pubs, I can well believe that the Police are correct to expect fewer problems. I've generally found Wetherspoons very reasonably priced, and to attract a much more mixed clientele than nightclubs, in particular, people of very different age groups. The food however, I do not choose to eat! It is cheap, and filling too, just not my taste. It is probably better if people eat as well as drink on a night out.
I'd be very unhappy if Wetherspoons failed to respect the internal decorations of the old Picture House, but if the Standing Order pub is anything to go by, they will be sensitive about it if they get the go-ahead.
Presumably it's difficult to run an music venue/nightclub and make a profit, otherwise the building would not have become unused. I think that this time we should make careful note of the Police input. If I get a response from my request to the Police to clarify their position I'll post it here.

Councillor Eric Milligan, licensing leader, said: “Personally, I do not think, notwithstanding the strength of feeling brought forward, that there’s any view that we should not be supportive of this application.”

Anybody know why nothing has been done to this building in the past year? Thought it was ready to go as soon as the planning permission was approved.
