Yikes - pretty much the entire segregated cycle lane has been dug up. Nice that they left a bit of it intact though, pity it was only so the contractors had somewhere to park their van.

The fact that they've trurned off the shiny new crossing lights is extra bad- you're just left to play chicken to get across the road at the end of The meadows.

Good grief. Is that Scottish Gas? Scottish Water? Scottish Power?
I sincerely hope they will be re-surfacing the path after this fiasco.
(I've not even ridden the blighter yet).

SPN

On twitter I'm being told it's Scottish Power.
My question is why now? Assume it is emergency works but did it get damaged during the construction work?
Posted 9 years ago # -
Good question.
Or perhaps it was 'routine maintenance' SP didn't talk to CEC about...

"The fact that they've trurned off the shiny new crossing lights is extra bad"
They had temp lights yesterday - but presumably only while work was actually going on!

@SPEnergyNetwork: @CyclingEdin Hi, I can confirm this was emergency works to repair our underground network. We will reinstate the road within 5 working days.

@CyclingEdin: @SPEnergyNetwork
Thanks!
Surface was VERY new, but not entirely smooth
I'm sure your contractors will do a better job

Looks OK.
Test will be if/when it subsides.
"So just because the cycle route is shut justifies cycling on the pavement?"
I think the answer is yes, though I suspect you don't.
The pavement is quite wide, I've never seen very many pedestrians.
I would hope people on bikes have been suitably considerate.

Ok, I'll bite. Why shouldn't you safely cycle on the pavement here?

Is the patch the right colour? This path has already been grubbed up and relaid for that reason.
Posted 9 years ago # -
What colour should it be? It's now black.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Maybe the new lines are too white!
Posted 9 years ago # -
At least with this 'mend' LOTS of people know which utility was involved/responsible.
I suspect it will last well because no buses etc. will be 'squeezing' it.
Posted 9 years ago # -
It's meant to have red chips, isn't it? But at some point there won't be any of the original surface left, like most of the streets in Edinburgh.
Posted 9 years ago # -
"It's meant to have red chips, isn't it?"
Probably, but this is one place where there's not much doubt that it's 'just' for bikes.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Didn't they already dig up the nice smooth black surface to make it into a more bumpy red chip surface?
So now it's back to black and even more bumpy?
What a mess.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Black is the new, er, black..
Posted 9 years ago # -
I tried it out at lunchtime. At the moment it seems no more or less bumpy than the rest of that stretch.

Council or private?

Private.
Unmarked.
Probably related to shop next to it.

Noted that one of the stone bollards has conveniently 'fallen over'. Thought it might have been caused by a desire line taken by someone using something bigger than a bike.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Seems that happened a couple of months ago. Probably a bicycle with six wheels and a big diesel engine and lots of steel bodywork.

I note that someone has moved the traffic cone that was covering up the hole where the bollard was. I was going to move the cone myself, but when I picked it up I realised it was marking the hazard so I put it back.
I'd put it back myself, but I've stopped going that way because I'm not going through the Meadows path while the leaf-slip is on. The road is at least less slippery.

@chdot, interesting, I wonder when the street was narrowed and the gardens put in to replace the original pavements?
