Was on train home today (with bike) and read the abellio magazine. Apologies if this appears elsewhere on venerable forum.

There will be three cycle point stations (two before the summer of 2015). This involves bike parking, bike tools, bike accessories. (And I assume bike hire) The three listed are Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling. There will be at least ten Bike To Go stations where you can hire a bike. haymarket is one of them. Timeframe in the next two years.

So I guess good bet Waverley will be a cycle point station before the summer? Glasgow has a number of suburban stations (Patrick being a nice big one) but I guess either queen street or central for the cycle point but no info provided to establish which.?

There is also an interview with abellio CEo imterviewing Mr Mackay Transport minister and the abellio guy asks Mr Mackay about cycling.nmr Mackay gives reasonable standard positive answer about increasing journeys.

RAIL bosses have been slammed over the poor access to Waverley station as it emerged there had been no consultation with interested parties over the controversial vehicle ban.

Transport charity Sustrans said no airport would make it so difficult for people to get in and out.

"Transport charity Sustrans said no airport would make it so difficult for people to get in and out."

    Really?

Ever tried to arrive at Edinburgh Airport on bike and park it somewhere? Can't imagine it's easy if it's possible! Likewise arrival on foot...

By taxi or car you are abandoned a fair distance from where you want to end up, and have to pay for a 5min drop off.

Don't get me wrong, Waverley is a shambles and is a pain for access, but to claim that airports wouldn't make it that difficult is way wide of the mark!

He said there needed to be a new junction created as part of the new St James Quarter redevelopment which would allow a right turn. The matter was being discussed, he added.

If that junction is going to be redesigned, it's all the more reason to keep the pressure on to get segregated facilities built into it.

I went past Waverley this morning and it looks like one of the barriers has been shortened, one of the tank traps has been removed and some people with tape measures were measuring what looks like the beginning of a bike lane...Progress?

@UtrechtCyclist that looks pretty much as I remember the north ramp looking just before their 'Fortress Waverley' lockdown... Could you see whether the fencing had been removed from the bottom of the ramp as well? The tape measuring sounds promising in any case so let us hope!

I still don't get why the south ramp isn't used for bikes. Makes much more sense.

The new Managing Director of the Network Rail/ScotRail alliance give evidence on station accessibility to the Scottish Parliament's Infrastructure and Capital Investment Committee today. He indicated that reopening a vehicle access ramp at Waverley (probably the south ramp) to bikes will happen in the next few weeks.

OK, let's call that the 13th of July(?)

RAIL chiefs have been told they must live up to their promises of improved access to Waverley station after they admitted a lack of consultation over a controversial ban on vehicles.

Phil Verster, managing director of the new Abellio ScotRail/Network Rail Alliance, told MSPs he agreed there was “room for improvement” on consultation; he admitted the current cycle access arrangements were “absurd”; and he promised to act over reopening one of the access ramps to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to get into the station.

    Phil Verster:
One of the biggest steps that we have taken is to bring the train operating business and the Scotland route Network Rail business under one umbrella to create a singular focus on putting the customer first. How we set up the business and are reorganising it is all about putting the customer first and delivering for the customer.

Yes, sorry - I should have said that that is just the bit about cycle access to Waverley. There is a lot more.

No need to apologise - just thought it was useful addition.

Will be interesting to see if 'cycle access' is restored next week - he said it should take two weeks...

There's a great big not-quite-correct "no cycling" sign painted onto the southern ramp. I noticed it for the first time this morning as I was about to push my bike under the barriers...

RAIL bosses have been told they must take urgent action to sort out passengers’ access to taxis at Waverley station.

A Scottish Parliament committee has written to ScotRail Alliance saying it is “essential” that taxi facilities which meet the needs of the travelling public are provided at the Capital’s main train hub.

All vehicles are now banned from entering the station and disabled groups have complained many people find it difficult to use existing taxi ranks and drop-off points.

Previous muppetry regarding access to the station was squarely the responsibility of Network Rail.

Now Network Rail and Scotrail are jointly responsible through the Scotrail Alliance. This may or may not meen something or nothing in practice.

Jim Eadie's just tweeted that cycle access to Waverley will be re-established in October

here's the statement he's put on FB:

    EDINBURGH WAVERLEY CYCLE ACCESS VICTORY
As many of you will be aware, in one of my roles as the MSP for Edinburgh Southern, I currently chair the Infrastructure and Capital Investment Committee in the Scottish Parliament.
Before our summer recess, one of the committee’s main objectives was to examine access arrangements within Scotland’s major urban railways, including Edinburgh Waverley. In order to carry out this work, the committee put out a call for evidence and also launched a survey asking for opinions on railway access in Scotland’s nine major stations, which received almost 5000 responses.
At one evidence session, the committee took evidence from Phil Verster, Managing Director of the Scotrail Alliance. I was able to put questions directly to Mr Verster about their cycle access policy at Edinburgh Waverley given the big interest in their decision to ban cycle access at Waverley station in summer 2014 following the removal of all public vehicles from the station.
Following on from the committee’s work on this important issue, I am delighted to confirm the decision of the Scotrail Alliance to reinstate cycling access at Edinburgh Waverley station. A new cycle lane – and associated infrastructure including gated barriers, road markings and new signage – will be created this month with the new cycle arrangements intended to come into operation by early October.
As the convenor of the ICI committee, I am absolutely delighted at this announcement and both my colleagues and I welcome the commitment by ScotRail to improve cycle access at Waverley following our work into this issue. I firmly believe that this is a positive step forward – not only for the final decision they have made – but the importance ScotRail put on our work and the fact they have listened to and acted on the concerns raised with them.
Scotrail will be attending the committee later this year in December and I look forward to updating you on the new arrangements at Waverley are working in practice.

Can only hope the gates will need to be opened for motor vehicle access rather than to allow bicycle to pass...
