Plans are under way to introduce a ScotRail CyclePoint hub by 2018 and we will be sharing more details of those plans with our passengers soon.

    "

    More glaciality.

    At least he said "passengers".

I don't stop to take pictures, but this is a standard everyday occurrence.

There's a painted notice on the ground 'no unloading on ramp' implying the vans are supposed to be parked in turning circle.

When I was walking out of the station yesterday afternoon I noticed that there is also a random pointless plastic bollard in the cycle lane right by the barrier, just to make it even narrower.

I went over to see if I could move it, but it is one of the narrow kind that is attached to the tarmac with bolts.

@NetworkRailSCOT: @CyclingEdin The north ramp in Waverley is a shared use access. It is now open to cyclists but continues to be required for deliveries.

@NetworkRailSCOT: @CyclingEdin The former taxi rank will be excavated next year to allow for extended platforms.

    "

    Anyone heard that one before?

Would have saved lots of discussions/complaints etc!

@NetworkRailSCOT: @CyclingEdin yes, part of @NetworkRailEGIP works, starting work in summer '16. Will allow additional capacity for trains in the station

    "

So it's been planned for years, waste of money shambling through with all those barriers and billiards then!!!

Announced fairly publicly in August 2014:

Two new platforms are to be built at Waverley Station in Edinburgh using the space left by the removal of its taxi ranks.

    "

Doesn't actually say anything about removing the existing south ramp.

July last year from an MSP -

    "

In order to seek clarification, I have been in communication with Network Rail to get more information on the Cycle Ban at Waverley Station. The Cycle Ban was put in place to protect passengers and cyclists from dangerous situations which could easily result in accidents after having removed all private vehicles from the station as well as the closure of the south ramp.

The north ramp will now be used throughout the day for deliveries via transit and long wheel base vans. This is an appropriate solution as passengers and cyclists should not be put at risk by vans manoeuvring while making deliveries.

Network Rail highlights that deliveries are vital to allow station shops to continue to trade and this can only be done during the day via the north ramp to avoid peak time travel at the station. Network Rail has, however, made clear that the station team will look at other options to improve the station delivery process but, in the meantime, all cyclists should dismount before walking into the station with their bikes.

I presume the ramps themselves are listed structures, so unlikely either of them will be demolished. The taxi rank may disappear, but where the south ramp will lead is unclear.

"I presume the ramps themselves are listed structures, so unlikely either of them will be demolished."

We'll see. NetworkRail can do some things without planning permission - and CEC sometimes seems indifferent to Listings...

Meant to post on this a few days ago. I've seen the plans and they involve the extension of the current platform 12 down to around the zebra crossing (requires demolition of the old ScotRail office and adjacent brick building). Two new bay platforms (5 and 6) will be created alongside the current platform 11/7. One of these will align with the extended platform 12 to allow for the future creation of a new through platform.

The south ramp stays in place, but the old taxi rank, road and some parking are effectively all taken up by the new platforms.

    From the skyscraper link -

    "

Listed Building Consent was granted in October 2013 for a twin up/down escalator to be sited perpendicular to the pedestrian crossing adjacent to platform 7/11 (Ref: 12/03614/LBC). This escalator has been installed however it is now required to be re-located in order to enable the extension of Platform 12. It is proposed to re-locate this to the north, parallel with Market Street footbridge (Option 1 shown on Escalator Re-location drawing).

    So much for planning...

Right, so let's think of something useful to do with it...

In Morningsider's note, most of this for 12:

    Ten and elevenses

and most of this for platforms 11/7:

Taxi! Taxi? Oh, I'll just walk.

which if you think about it is all pretty sensible. Waverley can be—and should be—more about catching (and watching) trains and less about vehicles.

What about the other end of the station, where the then platforms 7 and 8 once were? Why not add more platforms there too? Now it's a tarmac nothingness but it were different in times past:

    So much space

"What about the other end of the station"

Isn't that slated to be an upscale mall a la King's Cross/Euston?

Thanks! Looks like some good threads on there. Could become a bit of a substitute for the UrbanGlasgow forum (alongside CCE).

Hidden Edinburgh, Unbuilt Edinburgh and Cycling in Edinburgh look good for starters.

Who is "Kenspeckle" (most of the posts by him). He must know of/visit this forum.

This enables the extension of platform 12 and additionally serves to open up a separate area of concourse for pedestrian circulation and generally , de-clutter the area between platform 11 and 12 and provide views of the south ramp. It will also bring out the original columns which are currently encased by the red brick building.

So it's just for looking at??

    Ah, but...

"NB The extension of platform 12 will require the repositioning of the escalators on the South West corner of the concourse. We were aware of this requirement when the escalators were initially installed"

So that's alright then: they knew they were wasting their (our?) own time and money all along!

Looking at the plans, the south ramp will now be so functionless as a "road" that it would make much more sense to make it solely a pedestrian walkway. Get rid of the railings, bollards and kerbs and just let people walk, trundle their cases, etc. Maybe a bit steep for disabled access unless wheelchair equipped with a motor and/or good brakes...

A major redevelopment of Waverley Station has been announced with a new mezzanine level to free space for more platforms was proposed today by owner Network Rail.

It said the move could be needed to cope with passenger numbers more than doubling over the next 30 years.

Don't get your hopes up - the story is based on one line in a 76 page, draft, long term planning document for unfunded plans.

@chdot I'm sure this is the point you're making, but what or who is the route to be shared with? Is the sign on the north ramp cycle access lane?

I used the official cycle lane on the north ramp for the first time just now despite the fact I might as well have entered from round the corner since I was going to platform 9. All was good other than a flatbed van parked at the entrance to the ramp in what would be the cycle lane if it was painted that high up, but I was able to get by without any problems...

RAIL bosses are being urged to rethink taxi access to Edinburgh’s Waverley station amid growing discontent among passengers.

Vehicles were banned from the station two years ago, forcing travellers to get taxis or be dropped off outside in the street.

But older and disabled people have complained about the difficulties they face as a result.

If you open the station back up to taxis for the elderly or disabled (I don't actually have a problem with this. It's a fairly long and tortuous walk from all entrances to the central concourse involving steps/lifts/escalators in various combinations from all directions), then how do you prevent it getting back to a free-for-all where one side of the station is an endless conveyor belt of arriving, queuing and departing taxis? It would be worth mandating electric or at least hybrid taxis only were allowed.
