    No Cycling Permitted Please Dismount.

So taxis are still allowed to drive down the south ramp and into the station, but cyclists now have to dismount and walk. Who presents the more danger to pedestrians again?

Perhaps Network Rail would like to meet people who use
bikes and trikes as mobility aids.

A bit like Historic Scotland who allow 12 tonne coaches on the esplanade but have banned cycling

    Bizarre and pointless really -

Perfectly cycleable (as long as you avoid the pedestrians who don't seem to be banned.

The wrong graphic has been used in the sign. To be in keeping with traffic regs the sign for 'no cycling' would be just the red circle with a bike inside.

The addition of the red diagonal line gives it the opposite meaning...'only cycling' or perhaps 'cycling mandatory' :-)

But in the context of the surrounding wording I don't think we'd get away with arguing that one ;-)

Well when I got to the bottom there were two policeman who paid me no attention.

Are those huge steel bollards positioned precisely to dislodge panniers from bikes, and to make it impossible for trikes to get through without being lifted?

Look on the bright side - the station is now safe from Terror Bicycles.

Apart from the sort of terrorist who would cycle between the gap in the bollards! :)

If the sign says "No Entry" but then implies you can take a bike in if you have dismounted, isn't that in itself contradictory? Surely if it's "No Entry", you can't ake a bike in at all? Just as you wouldn't be allowed to push a car along a road marked No Entry.

Someone really hasn't thought it through before pressing "Print" on the station's PC!

I'm confused - I think I thought some of those pics were from the north ramp. Are ey all south ramp?

The four above are all north ramp.

There is a 'cyclists dismount' at bottom of south, which doesn't really make much sense.

    I don't have a photo.

    Road Ramps

Over the next few days we will be installing roadway markings clearly showing that cycling is not permitted on the South road ramp, now the security barrier system is in operation. We will be encouraging cyclists to use the North road ramp by installing a dedicated cycle route. This will include installing temporary signage ( initially ) and painted road markings to identify a clear cycle lane from the barriers to the bottom of the road ramp.

    Additional cycle storage

I accept that it would be useful to have cycle racks at the bottom of the North Road Ramp. We need to create space to do this without having a detrimental impact on pedestrian flow. The work compound will be removed in early March. At this stage we propose to move some of the cycle racks currently located at the East end of the station to this new location.

We are continuing to work on future plans to improve the station for cyclists.

How long ago did the south ramp planning start??!

That's a bit of a result (assuming the work compound is somewhere vaguely useful).

Why didn't they do that to start with?

    Oh. Yes. This is Edinburgh.

Sorry in what way at all is it acceptable to commission something like road blockers and barriers then unleash them on the travelling public without the relevant road markings, safety signs and directions in place?

If this was all planned in advance - rather than hurriedly put into action as a result of complaints - why could they not simply have put up a sign saying the cycle restriction on the North ramp was a temporary measure until the work was done? It would have saved a lot of bother.

Or, of course, they could even more simply not have restricted cycle use at all, seeing as it seems a pointless exercise.

No need to be sorry, kappers, it's not acceptable at all. Nor is it surprising, unfortunately.

Do they really think it is beyond the wit of a terrorist to acquire a taxi that has the appropriate licence to enter the station?

@PS Or indeed panniers, or just a rucksack, or suitcase...etc etc.

It's security theatre, nothing more, nothing less. Being seen to be doing something which superficially appears diligent. (c.f. airports)

Well I went down the north ramp (i.e. the one nearest to Princes St) this morning. I saw no signs saying that I should not. I also didn't see any signs about cycling down the south ramp but I wasn't really looking as I was concentrating on making the turn to the north ramp.

I went down on the right of the first photo on this page (I don't think the temporory cones were there any more). It was fine - but I'm not sure if there's enough space for it to be easily two-way for bikes. They obviously hope to deter us from using their nice station, nasty terrorists that we are.
