Surely the North ramp shown there only needs to be about half as wide for a dedicated cycle route? The other half could then be used to widen the pedestrian route.

"The other half could then be used to widen the pedestrian route."
Yes, but then they'd have alter the barrier arrangement at the top otherwise there would be the same ped/cycle conflict as now with both (in both directions) heading for the gap between the giant bollards.
In theory there is no need for vehicles to use that ramp - though I assume it will still be used for rail replacement buses(?)

Weren't we also told it would be used for deliveries to the commercial outlets?

Don't remember.
Hardly "dedicated cycle route" then.

Last night -
Couldn't see any extra signs/markings say 'cyclists MUST NOT ENTER - risk of injury'.
Don't know if that car was on 'authorised business' but it got let in.
Presume this is the work compound that is going to be removed -
But there is already plenty of room for racks -
and plenty pedestrians.

Given that the trams are supposed to convey fans to the rugby, perhaps they might have waited for them to be on-line too. or maybe the city could have gotten some good press by running some 'specials' on the weekend.

I always thought one of the traditions of a Murrayfield international was the walk along Haymarket Terrace/W Coates (either from Rose Street pubs or from Haymarket Station). Can't see how the barriers will impact that.
There can't be that many rugby fans taking taxis from Waverley, surely?

I thought the rugger types had a new dedicated entrance/exit at Haymarket station?
Posted 10 years ago # -
I think there's (or there will be when it all gets finished) a wider exit at Haymarket which can be opened for crowds. However a lot of trains that come up from the south terminate at Waverley. People in the east of England use the train too!
There doesn't seem to be a system to get such people to hop from Waverley to Haymarket by train. Officially I think you should be able to do this - certainly coming the other way there's no difference in a ticket to Haymarket as opposed to one to Waverley.

Fimm is right, very few East Coast trains now continue through to Glasgow and therefore stop at Haymarket.
There is a "crowd control" entrance/exit to the station, might also be for Hearts match days.
I think getting off at Waverley has always been "tolerated" as it provides ample opportunity for some pre-match sherries.

There will be some degree of 'take me to my hotel' - perhaps more tonight than tomorrow - but most will probably walk.
Good idea to have a Waverley - Haymarket - Murrayfield tram shuttle, but they are 'still testing them'...

They will sell a ticket from Waverley to Haymarket, but it costs a stunning £3.00

Cheaper than a taxi?
Posted 10 years ago # -
Do we know how many taxis there are in Aedinburgh? Has the number gone up? Do we take them more often? In a recession you might think use decreasing but if car ownership going down then maybe more trips? The cost of buying a taxi is very high and then the cost of the licence is also high. Some people drive other people's taxis and hve to clear say fifty quid a day before they start to make any money.
The ranks around both stations appear to have been quite problematic for many years. In Glasgow the queen st rank to the east is managed well. Central has less space maybe at the front but nice drop off zone.
Presume if arriving at waverley by train, up the escalator (partially broken yesterday) and across to St. Andrews sq for the tram? Nice new escalators to take you to market st also. Given there are four ways in and out of Waverley you would hope this could all be worked out?

There should be a tram stop right outside Waverley steps/escalator.

Sigh.

You forgot the shorthand.

Waverley very quiet last night at 9.30pm. Temporary taxi rank on Calton Road deserted.
Teacup. Storm in a.
Posted 10 years ago # -
At least the bus station has two stops!!
Posted 10 years ago # -
"Teacup. Storm in a."
That depends.
There are taxi drivers who want to use the station 'unhindered' and people who want to use taxis.
There are also inconsiderate taxi drivers and issues about whether cabs are 'public transport'.
There are sound arguments for having no taxis in the station and signposting the taxi ranks better (and warning when the escalators aren't working).
Might need to bring back porters too! (Perhaps with electric buggies and trailers for very infirm passengers and luggage.)
But this hasn't been done for 'making the station nicer' reasons or encouraging integrated transport without 'private' vehicles.
This has come about because of spurious terrorist 'prevention' measures.
As well as 'confusion', 'inconvenience' and (according to CEC) increased danger to pedestrians, it has highlighted again inadequate planning/provision for pedestrians (and cyclists) in the city centre generally - and of the PT/tram planning!

(Story doesn't include taxis.)

That's the excuse they are using in public, but anyone can see it's a nonsense. In reality the air quality in Waverley station is an issue, and it was easier and cheaper to ban private motor vehicles/restrict taxis than to get the Scotrail, East Coast, Cross Country, TransPennine trains upgraded to run on electricity instead of diesel. Also Waverley is getting busier all the time, and pedestrians and motor vehicles didn't mix well at the bottom of the southern ramp. They'll have done their research too and found only a tiny minority of train travellers were picked up/dropped off in motor vehicles.
Pretty sure I read several reports about Waverley being in breach of air quality regulations, and then, miraculously, the 'terrorism' reason was trumpeted...

"Do we know how many taxis there are in Edinburgh?"
@ Gembo, last time i heard (2 weeks Ago)there are 1416 taxis in Edinburgh, roughly 1 for every 320 people.
For a city this size, thats overkill,IMHO, and no pun intended.

Waverley barriers: Council call to axe £1m system
Posted 10 years ago # -
I'd love to hear how the council intends to act on its implied OR ELSE...
Posted 10 years ago # -
Well if the headline is to be believed they will take an axe to it!
