Wide open this afternoonDon't know how long for.
Since 07:00 or earlier (unless it was closed in between).
2nd morning this week I've been able to ride in. Much easier than squeezing past the crowd in the "No Smoking" zone.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

to avoid being mistake for some sort of provocative subversive, I avoid smoking and cycling in the station now. I either smoke or cycle but never both.
The barricades on the northernmost road down into Waverley are very impressive
well, you know, cyclists lobbies are just like ISIS...

The barricades on the northernmost road down into Waverley are very impressive
And completely ineffective against a motorcycle...
The whole exercise is a bit of window-dressing around the front of the station, does nothing to mitigate against the most likely (and still very unlikely) terrorist threats (e.g. individuals on foot with guns or home-made bombs) and really achieves nothing more than spending a lot of money and keeping some ANTITERROR consultant in champagne. Oh and massively inconveniences the travelling public.
If you were to weigh up the impact and probability of the various threats to rail passengers, this money would be much better spent installing the anti-ram protection and rising road blockers at the most frequently skipped level crossings.
That's what NR ought to be using! – none of those wimpy pole barriers. That'd teach the impatient drivists.
If you were to weigh up the impact and probability of the various threats to rail passengers …
That could make an interesting FOI request.
I was in Waverley for the first time in a while yesterday. Most convenient place to lock up the bike when meeting someone nearby, I thought. Realised I couldn't ride down the northerly ramp, so walked down, having to squeeze to the side for pedestrians coming the other way who, quite reasonably, don't exactly want a mucky bike brushing against them.
So after my meeting and retrieving the bike I wandered over to the southerly ramp, whereupon I mounted the bicycle and started up the ramp. Only then did I notice the 'no cycling' sign, and in a fit of pique ignored it (I realise I now have to criticise no-one for riding on the pavement etc), rode through the gap between the two big A-Team style ramps, but had to lift the bike over the low railing, walk round the barrier, and remount.
The whole thing struck me as ridiculously inconvenient, not just for me having to walk, but for pedestrians on what amount to quite narrow walkways up and down.
Muppetry. Of a significantly high order.
I found myself short on time this morning to catch my Glasgow train, and had to make haste down the north ramp into Waverley. Not easy when pushing a bike at the same time. As it happened, the train wasn't too busy and I'd've been better going to Haymarket as usual. At least there's space to get in and out of that station now.
And then I had a nice chat with a lady who took part in the Nocturne folding bike races in the Grassmarket a while back.
I admit to many a time ducking under the gates at the top of the south ramp and cycling up and down. As long as I give the people crossing from platform 11 plenty of space I've no qualms about it. I figure the worse thing that will happen (the first time at least) will be for someone official to tell me to get off my bike. I also usually bike really slowly and carefully. I'm a normal clothes/no helmet rider so maybe my lack of hi-viz makes me unthreatening.
I like the thought of terrorists having to wear hi-viz given their dangerous occupation.... :D
@WC they should all carry and present ID for that matter to show that they are true professionals and not cowboys.
Ah, now I'm remembering Armando Iannucci's Time Trumpet:
About time too!
done!
Thanks for the link, have filled it in also with my usual gripes.
Oh dear, the survey has started badly on Q1 - please tick all that apply - doesn't work
hmmmm...I emailed that error in to someone who assured me it had been fixed....
Just completed it. Q1 appears to have been fixed.
It has been fixed - i have checked! no excuses for not filling it in now ;)
Done for EDB and HYM. I'll do GLQ, GLC, PTH and STG when I have more time.
Done for both Haymarket and Waverley.
Done for Waverly. With lots of text!
Done for Waverley.
EEN have left the comments enabled...
Cue field day for insensitive commenteers
And the very first comment about it being a 'mistake' starts the ball rolling.
It's OK - there's the new cyclepath story for them to post their usual bile on instead!
EN comments disappeared.
