    "
MPs Julian Huppert and Ian Austin, co-chairs of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group, have written to the CEO of the ASA saying the ASA's ruling is "liable to put people at risk". Pointing out the ASA's double standards, the letter also asks whether the ASA intends to apply the same rules to car advertising: "Would you intend to ban any advert showing a car overtaking another car and going into the right hand lane." Hupper and Austin conclude that the ASA's ruling is "unreasonable, inconsistent and dangerous."

A petition has been created asking the ASA to reverse its decision.

The ASA chairman is Lord Chris Smith, the former culture secretary. He is also a patron of Sustrans. The letter from the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group was copied to Lord Smith.

"From a gutterbunny in Da Nang: "The ASA sucks the sweat off of a dead man's balls." I have no idea what that means, sir, but it seems very negative to me."

    Reaction

Alison Johnstone, co-convener of Holyrood’s cross-party group on cycling and a Lothian Green MSP, said: “This is a ridiculous ruling and is deeply unhelpful in the effort to make cycling an everyday activity. I think the ASA needs to get some perspective.

“Cycle helmets are a personal choice, and their ruling essentially tells cyclists to stick to the kerb when many of us feel safer cycling with plenty of room around us, especially when there are so few dedicated cycle lanes on busy city and town centre streets.”

Brenda Mitchell, of Cycling Law Scotland, said: “We need to create a culture as can be seen in other parts of Europe, where cyclists are given space not because they are wearing a helmet or because they are lit up like a Christmas tree, but because they are seen as vulnerable road users.”

Dr Sara Dorman, a spokeswoman for Pedal on Parliament, which highlights cycle safety to MSPs, said: “We should be working towards a Scotland that feels safe enough so people do not feel the need to wear protection to ride a bike.”

Dave de Feu, spokesman for Spokes, the Lothian cycle campaign, said: “The ASA should tell us why cycling casualties have started to rise again over exactly the same period that helmet wearing has become much more widespread.

Thank you for all your comments in light of the adjudication today by the Advertising Standards Authority Council to ban the Think Horse television advert. Here’s a round up of the news from around the web:

Err, advertising standards may be reserved, but Transport Scotland doesn't need Westminster's permission to challenge a dodgy decision in an English (and Welsh) court.

Perhaps the UK could call for a vote of no confidence in the ASA?

‘The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled that an advert showing a group of cyclists cheerfully pursuing a Citroën C4 car cannot be broadcast during children’s TV programmes because the bike riders concerned are not wearing cycle helmets.

Ah. I smell a Mary-Whitehouse-style BHIT rat with too much time on its hands, feeding a predjudiced ASA machine.

Oh yes, I'm sure I know who at least one of the complaints came from - probably not spin Scotland. I presume they are *delighted* by how upset we all are,

.@ASA_UK good, thanks. That now leaves the ridicolous ad helmet compulsion. That'll be part of independent review too?

@KatsDekker Hi. That is for Cycling Scotland to raise during the process but, yes, that can be part of the Review as well.

@ASA_UK that isn't enough, you seriously need to rethink your approach to road safety and how cars appear in ads!!

The Greek article seems to put a different spin on the facts: (Note - Google translate, so may be translation errors)

The advertisement, part of a larger campaign organization Cycling Scotland, aimed to encourage motorists to give fellow cyclists more space on the road.
But advertisers seem not to have anticipated the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the authority that controls the content of advertisements. The Authority ruled that this advertisement may not be televised as the fact that the cyclist is not wearing a helmet is "socially irresponsible."
Also the organization after receiving complaints that the ad the bike is too far from the curb.
From the perspective of the Cycling Scotland replied that the helmet is not compulsory for cyclists, however, seemed prepared to follow the instructions of the authority, saying that its future advertisements cyclists should wear a helmet and ride closer to the curb.

In a similar vein to CTC's 'which [cycling] ads are now banned', we should collect motoring adverts that show unrealistic (e.g. deserted roads) or risky activities (e.g. overtaking).

Once we have a good collection, we could all then complain to ASA about every single one.

    What do you think?

So that's the line in the sand, is it? I'm going to be having a helluva lotta fun over the next couple of weeks... (Car adverts, in particular.)

I just had an email from BBC Scotland. They want someone to talk to Kay Adam tomorrow.

I'll be working, and I'd rather snog a warty horse than be on Ms Adam's show, but they might be looking for someone else for tomorrow.

Is this SEAT Leon TV ad 'socially irresponsible'? by LaidBackBikes, on Flickr

Came across this ad on STV when watching Mr Selfridge the other night... (yes... looking for business ideas...!)

Irene commented that she was amazed that this ad could be allowed. Obviously a continental ad - shown only after 9pm maybe? Many parents will have let a child sit in drivers seat and not consider it irresponsible. ASA can't have had any complaints worth taking notice of?

Watching Kojak this morning and a Nissan Quashqai (or whatever) seems to turn left into a road where there is a green light. Even if it was the US they allow a right turn on red.

This doesn't look safe at all and the guy using a zip wire earlier in the ad has no hat or safety harness.

    Complaint submitted to the ASA.
