From Mr SRD
I wish to express concern about the driving of a Lothian bus driver this evening on, I believe, the No 10 service, on the Polwarth Terrace/Polwarth Grove section of service. The bus cut me off as I was cycling with my daughter on a tandem bicycle.
Between 19:15 and 19:20 today I was travelling on Polwarth Terrace heading in the direction of Tollcross. I overtook a Lothians bus — No 10 service I believe — stopped at the Merchiston stop just after the Harrison Road/Gillsland intersection on the Polwarth Parish Church side of the street. The bus began to pull out as I overtook. It then proceeded to overtake me, traveling at speed, just before the curving Polwarth Grove section of road. Because of the curve and the parked cars which narrow the road across from the Scot-mid, the bus was forced to brake. As it was impossible/unsafe to attempt to pass the bus on the left, I was forced to brake and pull in behind the parked cars in front of the Scot-mid until the bus had cleared.
Especially as I was proceeding at a good pace on the bike, I believe that the bus driver was unwise to overtake me so close to the Polwarth Grove curve. The resulting situation was unsafe, discourteous to a fellow road user and not in keeping with the training Lothian bus drivers receive with respect to sharing the road with cyclists. My family and I cycle regularly in Edinburgh, and deeply appreciate the care and concern which most Lothian bus drivers bring to their job. This evening’s incident is hence particularly distressing.
