New bike shop to open

    New business opening in March.

I expect (hope) the owners will make themselves known to forum very soon.
I'm not directly involved. (The plans for this were started before the news about Bicycle Repair Man).

Was going to call it 'New bike shop opening somewhere, sometime soon'!

That's all a bit too mysterious. Where is it? (I presume Edinburgh somewhere?)

Do I really have to go to BookFace to find out?

"Do I really have to go to BookFace to find out?"

No, but that's what they are using as a web site - it's where young people (still) hang-out (allegedly).

The photo goes to Flicker, and then you can click on the location info for a pointer...

I decided to go the Street View route...took a bit of time, but I was right in the end.

Of course they need a 'proper' web site for 'blocked at work' people!

Anyone who isn't blocked from the book of faces or Flikrer able to enlighten the social medialogically blind as to the address?

Very best of luck to these guys - always good to see a new bike business. Don't want to be negative at all, but I reckon that is a difficult location to work from - slightly far from main cycle flows through town, side street location, very limited parking. Hope I'm wrong though.

"slightly far from main cycle flows through town, side street location, very limited parking"

Reasonable amount of bikes use the Pleasance.

Busy(ish) side street (bus route), can be seen from Pleasance.

Suspect 'main' customer base will be students - a lot in general area plus more student accommodation being built across road.

At least people opening it are experienced bike fixers!

BUT that is no guarantee of success (for any business).

Think they'll make it - and will already know 'you don't get rich owning/running a bike shop'!

Looks like it's beside the Bonsai Bistro.
Plus points: it's close to my work, and I'm currently without a favourite bicycle maintenance place. Minus: even though it's close I wouldn't dare cycle it - lots of cobbles and dangerous junctions and careering loony drivists, whatever route I pick. Easy walking distance though.

I had my facebook account deleted some years ago. All the corporate surveillance and obfuscated visibility rules just got too creepy!

Big new student place going in to the old Deaconess Hospital site, and must be a reasonable amount of passing trade heading to Pleasance or up to the Commonwealth Pool / Pollock Halls in other direction.

Not an area currently served by a bike shop so good luck to them, I hope they are able to make a go of it. Rent likely to be more agreeable than on the main drag of Clerk Street (but plenty of people would be put off cycling along there too).

Don't know where you work, but - assuming University - tarmac only is possible -

Low-quality fence around the dogturd-park opposite not suitable for parking. Plenty of room on the footway for a few Sheffields around that point. Maybe they'll get a shop-front-mounted bar like EBC/BikeWorks or allow bringing-in. Would have been handy for me four years ago.

    Hi,

Figured we'd better show our face in person (so to speak). kaputnik, earthowned and chdot: proper website on the way, facebook's just a bit quicker to set up!

The Address is indeed 50 West Richmond Street - just off The Pleasance by the old Deaconess Hospital. It's between Bonsai and the Richmond Cafe if that helps. Bike parking is something we're working on, bringing bikes in may well be a temporary solution while we get racks sorted.

More exact opening date to follow, watch this space!

Cycle Service - the very best of luck to you with this new venture. Care to tell us who you all are and what you're trying to achieve?

There is parking available in the Deaconess Garden, but it's at the Richmond Lane end.

    CEC says -

    "

We're on it - there will be some Sheffield racks going in by the end of March.

Cycle racks by end of March? Wow. We requested 'ours'* when we opened in 2011 and got them in 2013...
CEC have now got up to speed on this now it seems. Which is good.
Big pavement space at this new shop so ideal for racks.

    * For general public of course!

For those not inclined towards Facebook, our website is now live (although still a work in progress):

    http://www.thecycleservice.co.uk

As to who we are, I'm sure many of you have figured it out by now! Chris and I have been at The Bicycleworks for many years, and are leaving this weekend to concentrate on setting up The Cycle Service. The Southside isn't currently served by a cycle repair shop, so that's the gap we're hoping to fill. I'll keep you all updated on progress.

We will indeed. Still finalising suppliers for some of the necessary bits though. PM me if there's anything particular you're after and we'll see what we can get hold of.

Now open! We have sunshine and balloons (as well as many more useful things). Pop in and say hello if you're passing.
