question 1: if you buy an insert, or use a car seat in trailer, then you can start pretty much from birth. Otherwise, once they can sit up.

question 2: can't help there. maybe she'll be won over by the option of staying home in peace and quiet while you take the wee one out?

my experience has been that drivers will avoid you like the plague if you are pulling a kiddie trailer. huge wide overtakes. and the trailers themselves are terrifically stable and safe.

From memory you can get trailers that work from birth (or near enough).

Pass on question two. Although I'll add that I get recumbent-levels of space from most drivers when I've got the rear seat on.

Biggest problem I've found is the little devil refuses to have anything on his head. Wooly hats are removed, and a helmet prompts a rapid descent into full-blown Loud Unhappiness. I'm aware there's an obvious solution, but the helmet is a condition of domestic approval for small person cycling.

It's almost enough to make one buy a bakfiets...

I'm not with child, but I can "+1" on the not-cycling bit from being a motorbiker. Be warm everywhere, and yes, eye protection is a must. It's as much for what might be kicked up by a motor vehicle as what you might run into at children-towing/carrying speed.

Ah, I hadn't actually considered just putting the car seat in a trailer. Simple, but good solution.

Now to persuade wife of the benefits.

I have once spotted a Bakfiets in Edinburgh with a baby in it, using a carseat adapter to fix it to the bench.

If anyone has slightly larger passengers (1-2, 2-3 and bigger) then Mountain warehouse currently has their ski gear on clearance which includes all in one insulated snow suits plus splash suits.

My passenger keeps one at nursery which he uses to play outdoors but I can sling on him for the journey home if the weather is more inclement than expected.

I used a WeeRide then Croozer Kid for 2 for my kids on the nursery run. Wife took some convincing but the safety features on the Croozer are exceptional and that swung it. Currently both are sitting in the shed and will be getting sold once I actually get round to it.

If anyone fancies either, I'd be looking at about £45 for the Wee Ride and £250 for the Croozer for 2. It would be nice if they went to someone here rather than eBaying.

Would definitely be interested in something like the Croozer, but I think it's just too wide to get over the Canal Aqueduct during rush hour :(

Said hello to chrisfl as he concentrated on cycling with babies last night on canal towpath

@chrisfl, It's about the same width as a wheelchair so I'm not sure if that would be practical, but I've never ridden across so couldn't comment.

If you do fancy giving it a go I'd be happy to meet so you can have a trial run along the canal? Feel free to PM me if interested.

If anyone else is looking for baby/toddle/child-size waterproof suits (all-in-one or 2-part) then I found they sell them at the big Go Outdoors place in Granton. They also have rather natty ones in green with a frog-face good and a yellow/orange dragon one.

Other half tried Mountain Warehouse on Princes Street but was told by the staff that they only keep that sort of thing in their big shop at Fort Kinnaird. OH gave them a sarcastic response about people driving to the great outdoors.

At least you could get a bus there. Dunfermline said they had sent all their ski (winter) stock to the shop in Aviemore.

Still you can order online for delivery to store but I think there is am minimum price.
