While any new tarmac is welcome, I don't think that was the part of the Lanark Road that I would have put it on if I had been in charge...

Minor win in the TEC committee just now:
All signed cycling routes and all roads with cycling lanes now have a 1.05 weighting applied in the calculation for resurfacing roads.
Active travel organisations (presumably Spokes and Living Streets) will also be actively consulted on the annual resurfacing program, so that they can suggest improvements to road layouts whilst they're happening.

“so that they can suggest improvements to road layouts whilst they're happening“
Kinda sounds like a bit late.
And of course puts the responsibility onto ‘amateur volunteers’.

Basically CEC should be training its roads staff better and also increasing the number of cycle infrastructure technicians.
Current ‘story’ is that they can’t get the staff because they don’t pay enough.
That’s compared with various consultant firms - some get well paid by CEC to do work that SHOULD be done in-house.

Sorry - suggestions would be made well before any actual work is carried out.
This has already been happening informally for a while. The difference now is that the council will actually ask for input, rather than Spokes just giving it. I hope that this makes the council more likely to take heed (although my understanding is that they've generally done so anyway), which might also lead to Spokes making more radical suggestions in the future.

Completely agree, of course. But I don't like to see opportunities for even small improvements be missed, and the suggestions from amateur volunteers can be useful for this.

Henderson St, between Sandport and Parliament St, which makes the right turn off the bridge a bit easier.

It was very narrow there yesterday morning. One wrong move by one of the mechanical shovels either side would not end well.

Roadworks are taking place along Nicolson Street and council officers said they “expect them to be completed by Saturday”. If there is not enough space to accommodate protesters through the roadworks, organisers will be forced to change the route.

Only just caught up with this -

I notice the stop line coming southbound there does not extend across the cycle lane. Deliberate?

The condition of roads in the Capital have been labelled an “utter disgrace” after it was revealed that less than one quarter of repairs scheduled to be carried out this year have been completed.
“
Posted 6 years ago # -
Fails to carry out two thirds of repairs bad
Less than a quarter completed
A twelfth or more started but not completed?Just trying yo make sense of the fractions quoted.
Have spotted
Roadworks everywhere recentlyAnd yet nothing about the sheer number of single occupant vehicles bring driven into Edibburgh from Edinburgh itself and the surrounding local authorities causing irreparable damage to road infrastructure. But the quotes from Tories so really should just spend more council tax on this ?
Or why jobs can be scheduled with the knowledge they Won't get done given the existing backlog. Quote from the coalition councillor dodging the fractions.

It would help if the repairs were up to scratch when they do get them done. I posted that Greendykes Road had been resurfaced 9 months ago; it's already sinking in a few places and will be back to a cratered mess by end of winter.

Or left alone - SGN are already digging big trenches along the stretch of Rodney Street that was re-laid to extensive inconvenience and sleep loss for local residents in July/August/September.
Posted 6 years ago # -
also West Lothian - the stretch of Lang Whang from West Calder turn (B7008) to Tarbrax closed for fourth time this year despite the ashphalt having been totally replaced, it is now getting scraped in patches.
The few residents ignore this, the diversions are big if cycling and the workies do not let you through
They always when they dig a hole in Germany all uitilities fixed at once?
Colleague who used to live in Sweden says -30 degrees but NO potholes in 18 months and no cancelled train. Ever
Posted 6 years ago # -
They must have been living in a different Sweden if SJ never cancelled a train
Posted 6 years ago # -
@klaxon, or have bad memory? Or had run of luck? Was Gothenburg I think? Chap stays in Livingston and comes in by train. Has been a bad year so far for cancellations. Rail replacements, engineering works, weather closing stations etc.

@gembo - I seem to remember getting through last time they were resurfacing. Hd to dismount and walk past the work site itself but otherwise no-one batted an eyelid. Fingers crossed you were just unlucky. Idk how they can stop you if you're technically a dismounted pedestrian
Posted 6 years ago # -
@edinburgh87 I would say nine times out of ten you get through. Twice I have been prevented, once south east of Carnwath and once near Woolfords T junction where the model plane club is. Both times the gaffer was nearby and the workies were under strict orders.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Technically, as you put it, you are not a dismounted pedestrian but "in charge of a carriage".

Indeed, hope for pragmatism all round but think I'll revise Saturdays planned loop :)

Am I surprised?, shocked??
This shows how awful and useless the red chips are.
It also shows how much CEC cares about safety - can’t even make sure the white lines are put in place straight after the tarmac has been laid.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Agreed, the red chips are utterly useless here. Barely visible in good daylight, but completely invisible in the dark or wet. There has to be a better way.
Posted 6 years ago # -
I passed that way the other day - is that it? I assumed they hadn't finished and were yet to add the bike lane markings?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Is that Bruntsfield Place? Is a bike lane there actually desirable? The previous one was right in the door zone, wasn't it?
I've heard before that the red chips only show up once they've been driven over for a while. Never checked this, though.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Oh I just saw the red chip now. It is more useful when bordered by white paint, which is presumably coming. Looks like they've left a bit of door buffer?
