    Haven't we been here before?

    (Many times...)

The application for planning permission in principle is expected to be considered in the autumn.

The proposals are now available to view at Fountainbridge Library, Dundee Street, until Friday, April 11.

Looks like they've put the benches across the current cycle path?

Alternative to be provided one assumes.

That looks intriguing and somewhat different to the last set of projected images that I remember seeing, although I suspect that a bit of a detour will be required for a while if/when the plans are finally under development...

It looks like the main cycle/pedestrian route is going to be set back somewhat from the edge of the canal – I wonder if the perpendicular channel of water will catch some people out despite the presence of the benches...

There's a dearth of Sainsbury's local between Dundee Street and Morrison Street. Could do with one right there for anyone unable to walk the 800m or so in between.

@SRD In this context 'stay' may mean 'reside'? That's how it read to me anyway.

Also, there's a bridge over that side bit of canal. But yes, they seem to have forgotten bicycles again *le sigh*

Stay could be hotel because we need them of course as no hotels in Edinburgh. But likely surely to be same dodgy flats as next door, the ones that may have been linked to demise of Edinburgh settlement?

    Missed that story/connection.

Google Edinburgh University Settlement, first thing that search engine throws up is an article by chris Richardson in bright green Scotland. In this piece there is reference made to a person who I thought was involved in developing the new flats, though I have been wrong before.

Dunno. I know local folk anxious to have some mix of housing included, but have been given impression that is unlikely to happen.

juxtaposition suggests to me that 'stay and play' means short stay at best.

you know about the drunk tanks 'sleep pods' they're proposing to 'trial' along there?

"Where do you stay?" seems to be a fairly common colloquial equivalent to "Where do you live?" in my experience.

Every time we walk past the existing new flats (the ones with applique bits of scaffolding and galvanised towel rails) on the south side of the canal between the lift bridge and St. Kentigern's church, it is discussed whether or not anyone actually lives in them as much as "stays" in them of a weekend.

Of the opinion that none of them are used as permanent homes.

@CyclingEdin @thecockburn @planningedin The path will be wider - no benches on cycle paths plus there's to be a new cycle path on Dundee St.

    where will it go to?

And will it have priority over side roads etc?

'new cycle path on dundee st' - I suspect it's just red paint and not really a 'path' at all

Dundee st could be a good candidate for proper segregated cycle path though - not many side entrances. Nice and wide,

I "think" there's a notional route from top of Telfer Subway through the Fountainpark to bottom of Viewforth. Maybe they imagine that is a proper route?

Does anyone know if the plans are online? The best I can find is: http://www.edigroupscotland.co.uk/projects/8/86/Fountainbridge.html and a lot more diagrams at http://www.7narchitects.com/projects/fountainbridge/

I had heard that they are taking down the fences to allow people to make use of the new routes across the site, so that should give some more information on how it's going to work.

@edd1e red paint on the road seems to be more than we can ask for these days. Stealth chipping is the councils preferred method of obscuring cycle paths these days it seems.

so people can have a 20 foot vertical fall from towpath level and onto the packed rubble of the demolished brewery level below?

From this is the school the pink building?

Can't quite work out how access from Viewforth to canal level is provided (if at all).

I like the concept of restoring "lost" streets like Freer Street.

The school is the white building to the left of Viewforth.

Yes no idea of how they're going to cover the height difference.

people complained that viewforth to canal access on school side is stepped (there will be a ramp further back, but may be gated). were 'assured' that there would be easy access for bikes, wheelchairs etc on the 'other site' but agree that its not obvious how from these plans.

Note on bbc website that Castle Mills which is somewhere at fountainbridge and where it is alleged the modern Wellington boot was invented for soldiers in trenches in WW1 by North British rubber co. Has £500k for Edinburgh printmakers to develop as art centre.

Hunter Boot Ltd is a rubber wellington boot and footwear importer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Originally known as the North British Rubber Company, the company manufactured vulcanised rubber products for over 150 years.

    ...

Problems have arisen with the quality of the boots since production moved to China. Many owners have complained about the very short life-span of the new Chinese boot.[31]
The Hunter boot tooling from the Scottish factory, and the manufacturing technique, is now used in Eastern Europe (Serbia) by Tigar Footware and the products are marketed as Century Boots.

Ahhh, so that's what that building is. I always assumed it was part of the SN complex and would be demolished in due course. Glad its being saved.
