So which charity should be shamed in this case?
Posted 7 years ago # -
@dougal - it wasn't clear - I should have asked - someone else might be able to tell if they go past this way...

I was running late this morning so decided not to stop when I saw this car there but they must have been there for a while - the gazebo wasn't up when I passed.

Don't know who it is but can recommend Leith's Worst Parking @leithsworstpark as a "niche interest" Twitter account. I know there's a good chance it's someone from this here forum.

well at least it's off the cycle path I suppose, but there were 5 or 6 people easily capable of carrying that stuff when I arrived. Did you figure out what the charity was?

Driver of red SUV parked on the pavement (and double yellow lines) opposite the kebab shop on Drum Street this evening. Everyday occurrence, but normally the drivers wait for the pavement to be clear of pedestrians before driving onto it...

Actually an absence of parking from yesterday - a group of us on bikes who had stopped to regroup and to pass round sweeties were told to move off the (massive, empty) pavement in front of the James Dickson & Son fishmongers in Cockenzie. Apparently the pavement belongs to the business and all of it is required for his customers to park their cars on. I expressed polite scepticism, suggested that people ought not to park on pavements and made a mental note never to buy any fish there.

The roofer's flatbed truck that's been on the northbound side of Clerk Street at the corner with Hope Park Terrace for weeks seems immune from enforcement despite having a wheel on the double yellows.
Just escaped getting left-hooked off a van turning from the right hand lane to get round it, so properly dangerous. Who do I grass it up to?

@IWRATS - Phone 101 - the police should deal with dangerously parked vehicles. I've phoned about this once, and it appeared to be taken seriously, but the vehicle had been shifted before I got home and phoned them, so don't know what they'd actually do about it.

Got a weird letter on Hoose o' Commons notepaper from Ian Murray MP about parking in my area. My area stopped voting for him and he's keen to err...help us with the CEC survey. There is a problem of people who work at ERI not wanting to pay Consort Healthcare (Edinburgh Royal Infirmary) Ltd's parking charges, but it's not the end of the world yet. My snarky resonse;
Thanks for your letter of the 27th concerning parking of cars in the Local Area.
I have to say I was surprised that an MP was writing to me on this subject, given that parking is the responsibility of the City of Edinburgh Council and transport of the Scottish Government. I'd have thought there were more important matters concerning the UK of GB&NI right now.
That said, there are perhaps parts of this puzzle which are properly yours to solve. I'd be interested to hear your views on what kind of society you think we should live in and how that vision ties in with the way we move around Edinburgh.
It might be useful if you based your thoughts on numerical data, for instance;
Population of Edinburgh; 492,680
Households in Edinburgh; 230,831
Households with access to a car; 60.1%
Residents commuting on foot, bike or public transport; 58%
Space required to park a car at one location; 35 square meters including access and manoeuvering
Carrying capacity of one lane of unrestricted road at 30mph; 1900 cars per hour
Average occupancy of private cars in the UK; 1.55 peopleLooking forward to reading your analysis of the situation here in the Local Area and indeed city-wide,
Yours,
IWRATS

Mr IWRATs, will be interested to see if the answer goes beyond
Dear Mr IWRATS thanks for your response, we will be back in touch (later, yeah like never)
Posted 7 years ago # -
Your 1900 cars per hour are tailgating a bit too much, aren't they?
Posted 7 years ago # -
@Frenchy
That's two seconds between vehicles, so real tight best case stuff. I'm trying to help the dude out, y'know.
@gembo
I know what the response will be and it won't even be a brush-off. I am filed in his cesspit despite being on reasonable terms with his office and sidekick.

3600 divided by 2 is 1800, according to my calculator ;)
Maybe I'll break out the abacus later to double check, though.

Dear IWRATS,
Thanks for your email and sorry for any surprise caused.
You’re right to say that the issue of parking is predominantly a council issue and a Scottish Parliament issue in as far as it relates to the RIE. Having represented Local Area for many years and having spoken to residents extensively during the recent election I know that this is the number 1 issue in the eastern part of Local Area. It was on that basis that I decided to write to you and other residents to inform you of this development.
The particular problems in Local Area are a combination of commuter parking at the RIE, construction workers at the Sick Kids and simply the fact that the estate was built at a time when cars were a luxury- now families can own 2 or 3 vehicles.
Part of the solution has to be to encourage the use of public transport and cycling which the Labour run Council (until 2017) made great strides towards. You can read the 2017 Council manifesto here for more information:

Yours,
Ian Murray
He fast I gotta give him that.

Also almost satirical with his apology for surprising you. @Iwrats. I am almost tempted to sAy - The little wascal has spiwit.

@gembo
Oh no doubt.
I'm going to engage him in conversation.I'm actually really interested to know what he thinks a happy and successful South Edinburgh looks like.

@iwrats, suspect less impressive in the flesh?

Another lovely shot of the bubbles van, this time with 2 whole spaces to choose from. Police and Parking Attendants not interested. As has been said many times, it is well known this is the technique for avoiding tickets.

IWRATS,
Why try and treat the cause when you can treat the symptoms.
the estate was built at a time when cars were a luxury- now families can own 2 or 3 vehicles.
Sounds like he has identified the real cause of the parking problems. People buying more cars than they know what to do with.

An Edinburgh Council van was chosen by its driver to induce some conflict by parking on the bike side of the MMW path directly opposite the Stoats van.
