    @chdot, well that's what you get for using a pannier instead of a courier bag!

    @wingpig

    Yes

    Not new, presume 'anti-motorbike' which is why there is the bollard on the grass (looks odd!)

    @kaputnik

    As my cycling companion said yesterday 'first time I've seen you with a pannier'

    @steveo

    Presume you mean a saddleback?

    Just wish there wasn't any bollards there at all - there are LOTS of easier places to get on that path if you really wanted to take a motorbike.

    Clearly not wheelchair/buggy friendly.

    Good - it's about time bollards were there instead of just holes in the ground. A day or two ago I saw cars driving down Middle Meadow Walk in the rush hour.

    Edit: a colleague has seen a car there too. At least one person now seems to be using Middle Meadow Walk as a regular driving route.

    sadly, with all the other 'car-friendly' entrances to MMW, I doubt this will stop many, but it should be some small improvement.

    I'm told these are permanent. yay.

    cycled along NMW from west to east this morning behind a council van, which went past the george square lane entrance, which is also probably the safest point of entry for vehicles. Why don't these drivers have the common sense to enter the path system from the entrance nearest their destination rather than driving the length and breadth of the park?

    “We accept that the access route is designated as a pedestrian pathway but it is more than wide enough to get a vehicle along if needed,’’ said long-time resident Fredrick Robb. one of two affected by the restricted access who is registered as disabled.

    Folk living in Ravenswood Drive in Caskieberran, who signed a petition calling for the removal of a bollard - which was erected without any warning - say they were told in December by council officers that it was to be dug up due to the public outcry.

    The bollard had been put in place to stop vehicles driving on what is a designated footpath following a complaint.

    Residents argued that because of the unique way the precinct had been designed, the walkway offered the only access to homes.

    Googlemaps says that is bollards.

    Sometimes you need a sign to help you see them...

    Bollards & Sign...

  16. This thread reminded me of a wee trip on the North/South Shields ferry last summer. This building was near the NS quay.

    Bollards

    Home of the Great British Bollard Company, apparently.

    Great British Bollard Company taken over by Marshalls. One part of the GBBC's main sales pitch was the use of Ferrocast for strong, low-maintenance bollards in a wide range of styles eg pencils at schools or penguins for zoos. These less colourful examples in Edinburgh in Nicolson St appear to be from the GBBC range (the distinctive feature being the white ballotini rings)

  18. Those are a bit boring. I like a proper black bollard, one where even the white bits are black

  19. I wonder if the penguin bollards are less likely to be driven into.

    Human cognition generally tends to focus in a perceptual scene on (apparently) living things more than on inanimate objects.

    On the other hand, motorists drive into people without seeing them, so perhaps not...

  20. There was a spate of bollards shaped like children placed outside schools down south. Apart from the fact motorists complained (cos they were 'scary' apparently, but there were also interesting claims made that it would make real children more likely to be run over...), there was definitely a story of one set being run over within a day or two of being installed. Google is failing me just now though.

  21. @Wilmington's Cow So drivers who kill children have the "I thought it's a bollard" excuse in court then...

    Is there anything they don't drive into? Perhaps bollards should be filled with explosives?

  22. Found the scary child bollards: "Don't look them in the eye or one's 4x4 will burst into flames."

    Have to admit the picture is very creepy.

    After following Slowcoach's link Google has now decided that I am in the market for penguin bollard and is advertising them on all the pages it controls.
