Can anyone recommend a good place to get a bike fitting? Wallet-friendly is always a plus point too.

Bike fitting?

I believe Ronde have a bike fitting service too - although as chdot says PlanetX certainly offers it at its other stores in Sheffield and Rotherham

What problems are you having Snowy?
Posted 10 years ago # -
Harts Cyclery in Corstorphine and Criterium cycles at Dobbies both offer bike fitting on their websites.
I've never had a full bike fitting though so can't say whether one is worth three times the price of the other.

PlanetX are still doing the Tri Centre bike fits as before although they are planiing to upgrade to a fancy digital system soon which will put their prices up and bring them in line with the other stores

@DaveC
At present, long rides cause specific pain behind the kneecap, both sides. I want to figure out if it's my position.
Maybe I'm just not training up to long rides correctly! But I don't want to add mileage if my position is wrong in the first place, so I want to check.
Longest I've done in the last 9 months is 135 miles. That gave me really sore knees, although the pain was gone within 2 days. I tend to do 80-100 mile rides about 5 times a year. Those are usually fine.
It would be great to consider building up to do something like the Snow Roads.

This may help, though I don't have time to read it all at work!

Thanks all for the suggestions and thanks DaveC for the article - I've got a few suspicions now! Will get a fitting booked ASAP.

I recently did a bike fit at Ronde with Mark. £80, but well worth it - you get 2 hours with Mark, much of which is spent on a turbo with him observing, adjusting things, etc. I picked up some coaching tips from him too. Has made a HUGE difference to my riding.

My knees have been vastly happier since I got hold of Specialised insoles and foot wedges for my shoes.
I was sceptical but the low cost (both half price from the bike co-op at the time) combined with a looming three week cycling mission in Cuba nudged me to giving them a try.
As well as massively ramping up my mileage without any re-emergence of previous issues (touch wood), I actually feel a lot more powerful on the bike.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Dave you feel more powerful because you feel you can go for it and not have recurring niggles because of the insoles?
I feel I should get longer handle bar stems as have wee legs but long back. This I hope would stop me getting a sore back after about three hours.?? I can adjust the stem but can't remember which direction would lead to me extending the reach?
Posted 10 years ago # -
Have used Ronde too. £85 for over 3 hours. Fixed my knee pain and my legs have even changed shape too. Stem change, saddle moved and insert for shoe as shim not suitable. Very friendly, relaxed and thorough. I would not hesitate to recommend them. You can ogle the expensive bike porn, too.

@gembo, hard to describe but I think it's because my feet feel more supported (like I'm pushing square onto a larger surface) rather than anticipation of dodgy knees later - I don't really think about that much when the chase is on.

Almost related -
Just taken shoes to be mended, one worn almost through - most of my bikes have metal pedals.
Surprised to find it was left shoe (and similar wear on previous pair).
Just assumed I'd be 'right footed' (as well as right handed) plus (almost) always start with right foot.
Posted 10 years ago # -
My right foot barely ever leaves the pedal, I tend to always put my left foot down. I wonder if the left foot being down on the road and always skimming on and off the pedal wears it quicker.
On another slightly related note, my left SPD is nice and free by my right one sometimes needs some encouragement to come free. Is this my pedal seizing or my cleat wearing out?

Bump.
Considering a proper bike fitting, and wondering where in Edinburgh does them?

Think there's been a newer thread, but updates here will be useful.

Bike Craft on Ferry Road. Not too expensive (no lasers involved) and also they gave me free socks because I stood in puppy pee in mine while we were doing it. (Short story: puppy belonged to shop next door.)

Edinburgh Bike Fitting in Ronde?
Dougie Shaw qualified Retül person. He shared part of the LB shop at first so do have bias.
Have seen him at work and he is good.@unhurt - good story :-)

Also, reminds me of the rat piss pasta hallucination post.

I'm also wondering about this so thanks Frenchy for bumping.
Has anyone tried the fitting at Criterium Cycles in Dobbies? It's more convenient for those of us in Midlothian and South Edinburgh than Ronde
Posted 6 years ago # -
I had a bike fit at Criterium when I got my fast bike. They were very thorough and went through things I wouldn't have thought of.
The initial fit worked well until I went beyond 90miles and then I got a little soreness in the knees as my legs got tired, so I went back and they helped with a final tweak to find the perfect fit for long distances.
Would recommend.

Thanks Hankchief

I was very impressed with a shoe fitting from Criterium which was included in the price of shoes despite them being in the sale.
Hart's also do a bike fitting for considerably less than Criterium.

Made to measure bike anyone?

“
Because each frame takes an average 150 hours to create, only a handful are made each year.

I've used this bloke recently - the main advantage for me was that I'm not in the city so the fact he comes to your house was a major plus:

Was it useful, @Schemieradge?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Yes. The specific problem I was having was having too much weight on my wrists. I think we made a lot of progress in adjusting my reach, but I found I was still struggling with too much forward weight once I'd ridden it for a couple of weeks. So I think my problem is ongoing in that respect...
But it was still useful to spend the time thinking about the objectives of bike fitting and I feel I'm better placed to make adjustments myself now.
And I'll add the caveat that I never got a full bike-fit - it was a more brief affair - so we might have done better if we'd spent longer on the problem.Posted 6 years ago #
