Currently a really interesting old building, which I first visited a couple of years ago during the festival to see an exhibition. As the last commenter on that link said: "Bye bye Old Town been nice knowing you."

Is that where the cafe and market are just now?

That's the one...

Obviously not Edinburgh, but the prospectus ‘vision’ has some of the same words - could be Granton...
“
“world-class family holiday village”.
The project, at Balloch, would include a new boat house and craft brewery, as well as two hotels and self-catering accommodation, under a master plan submitted to the local council.

THE coronavirus pandemic has “dealt a harsh blow” to the student accommodation sector with nearly £100 million in rent waived, according to Scottish legal experts.
It comes as universities consider new course formats in the post-Covid society and providers are left with the huge financial shortfall.
Student housing specialists at CMS have also said that while the new Holyrood Coronavirus Bill will help students it could also work against the provision of such accommodation

Proposals have been submitted to Edinburgh City Council for the transformation of Northfield House Hotel in Liberton, by property developers Audley (Edinburgh) Limited).

The architects state: “The owners have reviewed the business model for the hotel and have concluded that the retention of the existing house is not viable."
Yes, that's because it's actually a house with a garden, gasp, shock, horror, who'd-a-thought-it, etc.
Standard repulsive profiteering at the expense of the urban environment. Nothing to see here, move along.

I have had a drink at the bar there a few times and attended a couple of events. I'd guess the lovely young couple who run it just can't keep up with maintenance on the building given the sparse clientelle and dearth of community that far into the dead zone of south suburban Edinburgh. Travelodge at Cameron Toll hit the B&Bs hard I hear.
I'd never go there it wasn't the local for a couple of folk I know.

"106 bike spaces of which 40 will be for e-bikes."
Does an e-bike space just have a plug socket next to it?
EDIT: No, they're actually proposing a shared e-bike scheme for the development, with 40 docked e-bikes!

@frenchy those bike spaces will be forgotten about afterwards

My folks live a stone's throw from the Northfield so know it well.
It would be a shame to see it knocked down. IMO it would make a good gastropub although that's before COVID.
It has changed hands several times during the last few years.Posted 4 years ago # -
@mcairney
Exactly what I said about the Liberton Inn before it was turned into flats. South Edinburgh seems not to be allowed good things.

Balerno used to have 5 hostelries - 3 of them are now houses. Converted/ knocked down for development
The remaining two are trying very hard to coax us to stay local.
The post office is also now a Mexican takeaway and is really good.
Suburban venues up against the central pubs and restaurants.
Covid has not helped,

With only moderate offence to Liberton, it wouldn't exactly be my first choice of places of live as a student.

I think it's quite (and increasingly) popular with postgraduate students at KB and Little France. Folk for whom walking distance to campus is more important than walking distance to a pub.
Having said that, the Northfield is further away from KB than Pollock Halls is.

@gembo
The Liberton Inn was taken over by gangsters concerned in the Bolivian takeaway business. So the police said no pub.

@Iwrats, what is the world coming to? Coke in Liberton? Next there will be students moving in

428 cycle spaces and more than 1000 square metres of greenspace.

The accommodation will be designed and managed by companies specialized in house-sharing, offering pre-furnished and decorated rooms, communal amenities, including kitchens, social areas and coworking spaces, as well as professional services, such as concierge, cleaning and welfare."
Basically clever words to disguise the fact that these would be halls for students who can afford them. It doesn't sound like private ownership, not that anyone would want to, with a description like with "Apartments are compact yet well equipped"; it sounds more like a glorified hostel – which, come to think of it, would be a far better use. The Astor hostel in York is a lot like it.
...however the owners now believe the business to be “not viable”, with the main building dating from 1870.
Quality writing there. Perhaps the business would be viable were the main building to date from, say, 1970, or maybe 2020.
It's not listed, probably because it was 'only' the manse for the United Free Church, but there are other large houses that have statutory protection. I'd agree with Snowy: it's because there's all that land and space, and you can just cram in flats and rake it in. They tried to do that with Comiston Farm House, and got pelters for it. I would buy the farm house in an instant if I had lots of money.

Ploughing on for student accom with a likelihood that demand will not return to levels as before. Also more at ModaCity across Dundee St in last gap there.
Plus a hotel or two in addition to Hampton one already there.Church behind shop is likely to be student accom too.

That’s a shame. That church was going to be my do-er up-er architects fancy pants home.
I am not an architect (maybe in a former or future life?)

“Church behind shop is likely to be student accom too.“
Oh no. We were thinking it would make a great brew pub with a big beer garden.
What’s the story with the bowed wall/bracing on the close/access under the tenement?
