A prominent Haymarket gap site has been sold for almost £50 million after months of construction delays dogged plans for the key location.

M&G Real Estate have bought the four acre mixed-use development site on the former goods yard next to Haymarket Station for £49.1 million.

The sale could yet send plans for a £200m office and hotel development on the Morrison Street site back to the drawing board.

    and European piazza-style area...

    ... and a re-opened Scotland St tunnel?

Daisy was keen on it at the Spokes meeting.

Sadly I do not think the tunnel is a go-er unless the mall people agree?

Certainly the station part of it is above the Exisiting platform. I can just about see it from the office. But ending at the mall makes sense if it can be done. Imagine also mighty costly?

Would use it and like the idea just not sure how feasible?

Not sure given previous thread how gender friendly such a tunnel would be?

Cornerstone Property Development, the people behind recent proposals for 7–8 Baxter's Place, now seek permission to change the use of the former Royal Bank of Scotland at 2–3a Blenheim Place (Ref. 18/02357/FUL).

They propose a 7-bedroom hostel (number of beds as yet unspecified) on 3 floors, with the basement containing storage, a laundry, kitchen, cinema room and communal area.

Proposals to build more than 100 student flats next to the Water of Leith have been approved – despite a councillor claiming that it would contribute to “the death of the greenbelt by 1,000 cuts”.

Wonder where the rolls Royce that the owner hasn't had the heart to scrap will go now.

Maybe the cross keys will stay open more than three months if the students arrive? The other pub - blue house/tickled trout also closed and rumoured to be heading to student flats too.

I am now no longer clear whether ‘student flat fear’ is the new EN clickbait headline or whether new student accommodation is actually a significant proportion of new building.

Seems to have been in recent years, but surely supply must exceed demand eventually?

It seems like the general aim is to get all students into purpose-built student accommodation, freeing up normal flats to be sold to first-time buyers refurbished and rented out to people with more money than students but still no hope in hell of ever scraping together a deposit.

May be there should be a student tax like the tourist tax for students in the center or possibly all the universities could be moved out to Heriot watt as lots of land around the watt. The air would be fresher for students at the watt free from the Nox and particulates, free from the distractions of bars, drugs, sex and rock and roll

"May be there should be a student tax"

There is, they call it "tuition fees". Scottish (and EU) students get tuition paid by the Scottish government, and the numbers of "domestic" students are capped. Universities get to keep non-capped tuition fees as earned income. This is why student numbers are increasing in Edinburgh, especially from rUK outwith Scotland, and outside the EU. Students from beyond the EU are paying eye-watering sums to study in UK universities.

So purpose built student accommodation is not replacing HMO flats and houses in most cases, it is simply accommodating rising numbers of (primarily) international students.

From another thread (quoting myself) - stats from "Edinburgh By Numbers":

"There were more than 80,000 students enrolled in Edinburgh in 2016, up from 78,000 in 2014. In 2012 it was only 58,000. While not all students live in the city, the majority do. So the new student accommodation may only be catering for new growth in student numbers, rather than alleviating pressure in the private rented sector."

Homebase future in doubt as creditors meet

DIY retailer Homebase faces a make-or-break vote on its future on Friday as it teeters on the brink of collapse. The chain - where 70% of outlets are losing money - has proposed closing 42 stores and cutting rents on others as part of a rescue plan. But some landlords plan to vote against the deal, or Company Voluntary Arrangement, saying it penalises them. If it is not approved, owner Hilco Capital has said it is "very likely" Homebase will go into administration.

Application 18/03989/FUL by LIDL to extend the Easter Rd delivery hours has been withdrawn

Perhaps they saw the number of objections and will try again in the coming months.

Don't see the problem personally, though I don't live right next door. From a traffic congestion standpoint, and potentially for road safety, it would be better if deliveries were earlier in the morning, or even overnight. If I was living next to the loading bay I might not be too chuffed about potential noise though.
