Loved the pics then got an idea of where the cash comes from:

Pay £15 to advertise Sky on a baseball cap...
Get a free hi vis sheet that also advertises Sky...

There were also rides outside central London.

This one in Crystal Palace had local difficulties

But she has never achieved anything apart from once sitting on a bike while wearing a dress, right?

"I am usually always top 3 when racing the guys. I have been racing them now for 2 years and I was almost the National Champion last year though had to settle for the No 2 spot. The boys in BMX are all cool, some spit their dummies out but I just let them get on with it! It's really quite fun to watch when I kick their booties"

Spitfire, it seems you're not the only one who raised a quizzical eyebrow at the satellite television empireness of a mass bike ride.

"Why don’t I like it? Well, I suppose mainly it’s because I don’t like the implication that riding a bike is a leisure activity that should only be undertaken on closed roads, whilst wearing hi-viz and a helmet, under the strict control of a bunch of marshalls."

Just trying to point out that mention of a male cyclist would never be immediately accompanied by a "glamour" shot of said cyclist in the way that mention of female cyclist is, as if their only worth is in looking decorative, never mind their achievements. I would start adding such photo's of top male cyclists to all threads that mention them if I could find any but for some reason I can only find pictures of them winning stuff (see what I mean?). Only I wouldn't do it anyway.

    Sorry if I worried anyone.

  18. There is also the basic point that male cyclists don't look anywhere near as good as female cyclists - certainly watching the Tour with Mel she enjoys the racing (will happily sit and watch it with me when she won't even consider watching football with me) but will mention at least once a show how skinny and unnattractive the guys are.

The photo linked is actually a really good shot, but nothing compared to a pic of her creaming her opponents out on the BMX track.

I know what you mean (and agree).

I used the 'dress shot' (and have previously on this forum) because it's one she had on her site - and is indeed being used by her as her Twitter 'wallpaper'.

It's very different from her 'normal' image and may (or may not) have been 'created' for her, but the fact that she still uses it suggests to me that she likes it.

BUT it could all be calculated media manipulation that I have fallen for.

    "Sorry if I worried anyone."

    You did...

Haven't you got skinny since you started cycling to work??

Well that is your opinion. I disagree, but then this board is male dominated. On a female dominated board, no doubt you would quickly get fed up of "never mind the Champs Elysees, check out Cav in his Calvins". ;-)

Oh I am not saying it is not a nice photo, it is lovely, and if i were her I would use it too. But as an illustration, whever Lance Armstrong is mentioned I do not feel the need to post say, the photo of him naked on a bike as if that is the defining image of him.

I was sure I would find a nice pic of Chris Hoy in a suit (which would have reinforced your point as he is one of the few). Not as easy as I expected - http://www.google.co.uk/images?rls=en&q=chris+hoy

Have to agree with Min here. That pic really rather superfluous (will avoid saying gratuitous). Why not just a link to her website or something?

The difference there is that I don't think he would see it as "the defining image of him"

After the Olympics there were photos of a naked GB cyclist draped over a bike - 'nothing showing' - which I found a bit disturbing, and I'm not sure why.

She didn't seem to be reluctant, but...

Vanity, aesthetics, glamour, exploitation, empowerment, money??

Sorry, I'm defending my use of that picture. I used it partly because it's unexpected (if you haven't seen it before) and partly because I sensed (probably wrongly) that there was a feeling she was just a pawn in a commercial game (willingly or unwillingly??), whereas 'that' picture indicated a 'free spirit' - or maybe someone completely manipulated - I don't know.

"Why not just a link to her website or something?"

Well unfortunately it seems to be off line "Sorry! We could not find http://www.shanazereade.com", which isn't a good sign for a well run public image manipulation machine...

That was actually intended as a backhanded compliment to all of the women on this here board... :P

Too late, the image of Cav in his pants is indelibly imprinted in my mind. I know that's all my own fault but I'm still blaming you. :-p

Ironically that was Victoria Pendleton recreating an iconic image of... Lance Armstrong
