    We could call it the CCEFAPEM for short, assuming we'd forgotten what the word 'short' means.

    The actual anniversary is a Monday, but I don't forsee good turnout on the evening of that most accursed of days, but I'll throw it open to the floor.

    Venue is the next thingie. We've not adopted a drinking den of evening ilk the way we have a morning, so there's no one natural candidate. Well, there are two, because the Golden Rule and Bow Bar are (I think) tied for having more CCE meets in it than anywhere else I'm aware of.

    Anyway, plainly we can't let the big Five Point Oh birthday go past without a celebratory tipple, so let's put our heads together and think of days and venues!

    SRD clearly hasn't forgotten what short means. Anyway, I'm up for this.

    Friday or Saturday better for me.

    Golden Rule is always good. Could also consider Cloisters or Brauhaus (largest beer selection in Scotland apparently - mainly bottles though), although it's very small.

    Potting shed has good range if beers and lots of space. Might be busy fri-sat.

    Teuchters on William Street is also good - good beer selection and handy for Haymarket for any Fifers needing the train back home.

    Brauhaus

    Surly staff, lack of seats, worst [gents] toilets in Edinburgh. I no longer go there.

    I'm Meadowbank now so will travel wherever.

    We have Ventouxed previously as well. Cloisters is good. Bow Bar good. Teuchter's ain't to bad, and there's Bert's Bar opposite if we can't make room.

    My favourite CCE booze up was in Diggers but not hugely central. Could do this Friday but not sat. Same again the following weekend

    Kaputnik and I have spookily identical choices. All have great real (and craft) ale selection.

    Diggers good but limited beer.....and will have football fans on a Saturday.

    +1 for never going in Brauhaus again.

    Diggers was my first ever CCE real life meetup!

    I'm mildly concerned that the pubs proposed so far aren't particularly eccentric. Diggers was but is no more, so I suggest, north to south;

    *The Pond
    *Port O'Leith
    *Kay's Bar
    *The Wally Dug
    *The Canny Man's

    Would suggest avoiding diggers. Suspect we could book a spot in potting shed and there is loads of bike parking. Bow bar is excellent and racks at the top of Victoria street. Teuchters is crammed till about 8pm on a friday - quieter Saturday.

    Are we going for this weekend or next weekend? Next is possibly better for me and prefer saturday night. Also happy for a thursday night or a sunday night.

    *Kay's Bar

    possibly too small for our porpoises, but a thoroughly excellent venue otherwise!

    *The Canny Man's

    Possibly too full of dusty tat and clutter and trading on its past reputation?

    I suggest we get a non-critical mass of folks to agree a date and location and just go for it, that normally works best for these things.

    Dagda remains my preferred small bar. Excellent beer too.

    But Potting Shed handy for larger groups.

    I can't offer any recommendation, I have heard of Dagda, might even have been in it once.

    I'm always surprised at the cost of beer when ever I frequent a pub, and even more astounded when that pub happens to be in Edinburgh. Last time I frequented pubs on a regular basis a pint was £1.70.

    If it is next week, I'll arrange a mortgage and bring a straw. Can't make this week.

    I would definitely agree that The Canny Man's is overrated and trading on past glories.

    I will probably try and make it, although probably not until later 8:30ish...

    @SRD

    I got banned from Dagda when it was Proctor's for singing Elvis Costello's 'My Aim Is True' in a pitchy duet with a pugilistic midget.

    Can anyone think of a more middle class name for a bar than 'The Potting Shed'? The School Catchment maybe?

    Agree date and venue imposition by non-crtical mass.

    This weekend isn't good for me. I can't remember what is happening next weekend. The idea is good though.

    I don't think potting sheds are "that" middle class? More of a thing for a plant hobbyist. The "Chiminea" or the "Natural Wood Decking" might be closer to the mark.

    The "Waitrose Essential"? The "I saw it in Jamie Oliver's Latest Book and Just Had to Try it"?

    That's a really handy tool...

    (Doodle, that is; I wasn't entering the middle-class bar name competition)

    I'm liking The Waitrose Essential. Potting sheds aren't of course middle class, but calling a bar 'The Potting Shed' is.

    Calling a bar 'The Clock Inn' isn't middle class.

    How about appealing to the youngsters with "Unused toastie maker" or those just married with "The Breadmaker" or those with a new house "The constant decorator", or finally those with new children "The tired lightweight"

    The Antiquary bar would sound middle class, actually no that would just sound too silly.

    @Ed1

    The Actuary Bar would certainly be middle class. It would be in Balerno and serve a risk-weighted mixture of lager, heavy and stout.

    "The Quinoa & Kale"?

    Not that I have anything against either of those foodstuffs.

    I don't seem to be middle class enough to understand some of those suggestions.

    I'm sure Gembo said that the reason people in Balerno can't have nice cafés is that people in Balerno are too middle class to go to them and would sooner stay in their own houses drinking coffee. I wonder if that extends to upmarket boozers?

    I note that the Scotmid now masquerades as a Costa Coffee though.

    "The Jasper & Conran"?
