Looking for options for a train accessible, not too hilly (mainly) off road route of c50 miles for a weekend adventure with the kids. Any suggestions?

Was thinking of gravel tracks in the hills somewhere.

Pondered Fort William to Inverness, but reckon it might be too much for a weekend (including travel to & from).

Closer to home - has anyone done the 2nd half of the Capital Trail? Gala/Peebles to home might just work...

@Greenroofer did Markus Stitz's East Lothian trail a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it- a really good network of paths. Can start in North Berwick and havea bail point in Dunbar. You can also do sections of the John Muir way (I walked the N Berwick to Dunbar section the same weekend) with loads of station options.

‘Chief, there is blether on here somewhere about the second half of the route as long as you skip some big hill.

I walked Peebles to West Linton and that route has some fab off road gravel and forest tracks. Some tarmac.

West LOTHIAN. Cycle Forum has a a gravel gang i sometimes spot posts from

@HC the Go East Lothian Trail is extremely child-friendly and is 40 miles in total. Most of it is off road on gravel tracks. The on-road bits are mostly benign: the worst is the coast road from North Berwick to Tantalon Castle. Only steep hill I recall is leaving North Berwick, but it wasn't long. Extremely train accessible on a train route that doesn't need reservations.

Do it in a weekend and camp in Dunbar?

That looks like an excellent option. Will need to find space for beach stuff...

The Capital Trail as such is not family-friendly in my view but then the Chieflings may well be made of pretty stern stuff. Stitz is bonkers and so is his route. It is a challenge.

What you are looking for is precisely the thing that doesn't exist. The Great Glen is lovely up to Cille Chuimein (Fort Augustus if you must) but then you have to climb the Suidhe or the Abriachan hill depending if you go north shore or south. Either could provoke tears.

    I'll get thinking.

Wild camping where Links Wood joins Ravensheugh sands would be a proper adventure. It is an awesome spot

How about taking the train to Forres and riding an out and back to Grantown on Spey on the Dava Way? If you need more distance use the old Caulfield road to access the Speyside Way or take the coast path up to Burghead for the Pictish bulls.

Train-accessible and almost wholly off-road on train gradients. The Dava Way looks totally different when heading north or south. I took my then 14 year old nephew on it and he declared it to be unsurpassed.
