...P.S. The number is up a bit on the same time last year, so we don't have resolutionaries, but there are more 'more of us'.

At lunchtime I was on towpath between Meggetland and Harrison Park.

At one point there was a 'convoy' of 4 unrelated bikes.

And a class of kids -

Bike parking at work pretty much as full as I have ever seen it over the last couple of days. Also a noticeable increase in the number of women cycling in - have we reached a tipping point where cycling in (central?) Edinburgh is now seen as a normal travel choice?

Most people ever who have kept cycling through the winter

I've been thinking about this thread recently as I feel as though I'm seeing more cyclists than previous winters.

Yesterday evening I was cycling back from swimming at about 10pm when I spotted another cyclist ahead of me. They were moving more slowly than I was, so when I caught them up I said "Good evening" just to be polite and give notice that I was there. I think I still startled the cyclist a bit, because back came the reply "Oh! hello..." - and it was another woman.

Have been travelling in via Kirkliston but decided to go through Dalmeny Estate on the A90 diversion this morning and saw 2 groups of 3-4 riders + a lot of individuals. felt like more than last time and that was later in the year.

Loads of bikes out last night after nine I was surprised to see several on their way up Lanark Road and loads in and around Slateford/Gorgie.

There was quite a crowd at the Argyle Place lights this morning waiting to cross onto Middle Meadow Walk. The subsequent procession through the Meadows almost made me feel like I was in a Model Cycling City, so it did.

My mother-in-law appends lots of "so it did, so we have, never it has, never I have, neither it is" sorts of thing to the ends of otherwise tolerable sentences, but is a lifelong WestCoastrian Ayron rather than a NornIroner.

There are always a good number of cyclists on the Livingston North trains, but yesterday there were hordes on the particular service I was on...

Do train services always use the same type of carriage for the same time of service? Just I noticed some train carriages can carry a lot of bikes the ones that hang up, some can barely fit 2.

Ed1, that's usually my experience. Others will be along shortly with more detail than you could possibly imagine ;-)

Incidentally, at Edinburgh Park on said over-bicycled train, the guard happened to be at the door nearest me and he called a cyclist who must have been hurrying up and down the platform trying to find a spot to get on where he was, even though there was already one bike there. Guard was relaxed about the number of bikes; "Just so long as there's space to get past," he said.

@chdot possibly. Or possibly the previous train had been cancelled - though I don't recall thinking that there were more non-bicycle passengers than usual.

Generally yes on most lines, although some have a more mix-and-match approach than others.

You are entirely correct that there's a wide range of provision on Scotrail, from entirely absent but with space to hold or bungee a bike, to useless cupboards on some Class 158 units, to reasonably good horizontal racks to a great provision of wheelhangers on the 156 units normally found rattling around the West Highland lines. East Coast, Virgin and Cross Country all have a range of options on offer, some much better than others. There are also detail differences within a particular class of units, as some have been inherited from other operators with different specifications and others may have been upgraded.

The slow train between edinburgh and Glasgow has the hang bike from hook facility can take 8 bikes I think. In twist never seen more than two other bikes. Whereas the stirling train is a big risk for me to catch at nearest station - edinburgh park as likely the two bike slots already taken - sometimes the conductor lets more pile on but not ususally by edin park. On way back from stirling, often is the cupboa d of shame. One bike only or two if pile on top

Just completed the stats for my work for February, and I'd say that the count of bikes in the bike park is down about 15% compared to the equivalent time last year. It's been bumping around 65-70 since the start of the year, and it was closer to 80 same time last year.

I reckon it's the cold this year. It's not been particularly inviting weather for cycling.

CrossCountry's service in and out of Glasgow Central has what amounts to two shower cubicle sized spaces where you can hang a total of three cycles. Two slots are reservable, one is first come/first served. XC have a handy notice telling you all the things you can't take on the train. I'm always left with the impression they wish you wouldn't want to take your bicycle on the train.

This morning, boarding at Waverley, the train to Glasgow had one tourer on-board already. I snaffled slot no. 2 and a guy with a folder boarded at Haymarket and had slot 3. From time to time I see a guy on a hybrid-y type bike and a lady who last time told me about her keenly anticipated Planet X road bike. Its sufficiently busy that I have a folder specifically to commute to Glasgow.

N Berwick - Edinburgh trains just have a rather daft Cycle Priority area (i.e. a row of flip-up seats and two long pieces of velcro). Anything other than a neat stacking of bikes leads to wasted space and irked staff telling you to find space in a vestibule, drawing the ire of the herd of commuters who feel obliged to throng in the doorway.

There were loads of cyclists going in different directions through Haymarket this morning.

I was seventh in a line of 8 heading into town!

  27. As I joined the path at Craigleith this morning around 6.20am and turned left to head towards Roseburn, there were five other cyclists already on the path ahead of me.

Five! In all the years I've been going that way there've never been more than two (and that was at the height of summer, not the chilly, misty near-spring morning we had today).

  30. As I arrived at the Ped crossing at South Gyle Access/Bankhead Drive this morning (pretty much 7:30)I was one of 5 cyclists waiting to cross the junction. No peds, and IIRC, fewer cars waiting at the lights!

I've also noticed that the 3 members of staff here who only started cycling (maybe again) a year or so ago, all now own at least two bikes!
