7 bikes on a 2 carriage train South Gyle to Haymarket today. Kudos to the conductor who took it all with good humour and also the lady with the inside bike who had to get off the train first...

I passed 39 cyclists between Barnton and Ferrytoll today, including a group of 5 children cycling to school. Substantially more than I've counted in the morning before.

Agreed, definitely more traffic on and around the bridge especially many more going to Fife in the morning, including 2-3 regular women cyclists who I haven't seen before.

I've probably passed you @acsimpson on many occasions, but no idea which of the regulars is you...

Bike racks at my office are full by 8.15...

To you or I that may suggest we need more...

Paddyirish, I'm sure we pass fairly regularly. Perhaps we even nod to each other as we do so. I normally ride in either a red short sleeve t-shirt or night vision jacket, black/grey helmet and have a rack pack rather than paniers or backpack. So hi next time you notice me.

@acsimpson, I'm a big guy on a ridgeback hybrid, usually gasping. Have a pannier rack, often with a child seat attached. Wear a black and red rucksack, but no regular top. Will look out.

123 bikes in our work bike park yesterday. That's the third-highest number recorded in the past three years (and so probably ever). The two days ahead of it on the list are (strangely) the Tuesdays after the August Bank Holiday in 2013 and 2014.

A colleague rode to work for the first time for four years yesterday, saying that if there weren't going to do it then when were they going to do it. Said they will probably try again on Monday too.

I ended up at the tail end of a queue of eight bikes waiting to turn right at the King's Theatre today - most I've seen at this spot recently. We all went on to Valleyfield Street and the Meadows. Very busy along the canal as well in the evenings.

More bikes than ever before, and also a greater variety of styles. I saw all flavours of cycling life today.

In the space of about 200 yards on the Pinkhill path I passed commuters with laden panniers, a roadie in full lycra, a bloke with a toddler on a bike seat, a tandem with a young girl stoker.

Also made the regular spot of the woman on the very elegant Dutch bike: totally upright, square swept-back bars and very large wicker basket. I always feel slightly embarrassed as I pass her; I've got high-viz/helmet/bike computer/camera and she is dressed "normally" and makes cycling look as natural as walking.

Further on I also saw loads more commuter set-ups, a man in a suit on a Brompton and a guy on a road bike with tri-bars.

It feels like we're on the cusp.

Only downside is the longer queue to get in the showers at work!

40 more people signed up to our work's BUG at a stand Greenroofer & I ran yesterday lunchtime.

As usual finding a safe route was the biggest barrier.

.@TheBotanics are wonderful in other ways but should consider investing in some proper cycle parking. #RackedOff

I asked the question on Twitter: Are these the only bike racks in Musselburgh (pop 21,900) apart from the ones outside the station?

I got two replies both mentioning one other rack behind the police station. That's pitiful really.

The 'new' John Hope entrance did have a raised 'traffic quietened' area on the original drawings. Of course budgets were squeezed to complete and this seemed to be left out. Like Holyrood Park, cars are considered an important means of delivering custom.
There are bike racks - not many and not that well designed.
There are no public transport options at this western gate although a walk or cycle up through Inverleith Park is a nice warm up. Arboretum Rd does have plenty of parking spaces so they should improve things for other means of getting there. Goes well with the eco-theme for PR too.
RBGE has very high bike usage amongst staff.

Sometime today the MMW counter is going to tip past a quarter of a million for this year.

@cyclingmollie - quite a few supermarkets in town have cycle parking:

    - Tesco: big row of wheel bender racks
    - Lidl : wheel bender racks
    - Aldi: two Sheffield's
    - Pinkie Mains Farm Shop/Nisa: a couple of Sheffield racks.

The closest racks I know of to the town centre are outside the Sports Centre next door to the Grammar School. Elsewhere in town, there's a couple of racks at Fisherrow (near the children's sandpit/playground).

I find that the railings flanking the pedestrian crossing halfway down Musselburgh High Street (near the Clydesdale Bank) offer a fairly good place to lock-up for using the local shops/cafes/loos, but aren't 'official' bike parking.

Cycle parking somewhere at the east end of the High Street might be handy given the number of cyclists who called in at Luca's over this weekend (our house looks out onto Luca's so we can judge exactly when to make our run for ice-cream...)

I agree Mandopicker that the pedestrian barriers are useful - I use those. The supermarkets have racks yes but I'm really complaining about the town centre and the public spaces. To take Lucca's as an example - the nearest official racks are about 300 metres away, hidden up a back alley that even I didn't know about. The area across from Lucca's has just been redeveloped to provide more car parking. There are no bike racks there at all.

@Cyclingmollie - yes, I'd wholeheartedly agree that the East end of the High Street could use some cycle racks. When friends come to visit us, they always remark on the lack of cycle racks near Luca's. It would fit in with the Council's desire to create a more pedestrianized/market-y area in this part of town. When the new café opens in what was the ground floor of the old Musselburgh Arms hotel it's only going to get busier.

Equally, some cycle parking near the Shorthope Street carpark would be handy too. Good for the High Street shops, visits to the river etc.

One for the council's cycling officer?

7.10 this morning at King's junction - three bikes in ASZ all piloted by women.

    Numbers not unusual; demographic somewhat.

Random observation (mostly through the day) suggests a (statistically?) significant increase in women (wide age range) - predominantly in 'normal clothes'.

That was one of the things I noticed about the Women's Cycle Forum - I don't suppose absolutely everybody arrived by bike, but there was only about one person who was wearing obviously cycling clothing (plus a second who had a cyclist's waterproof jacket).

See above from me, wishing for grass cutting yesterday. Today the waterways or the council or some other excellent public body has trimmed the edges of the grass from new boroughmuir site to t least hermiston. Chapeau
