    @edd1e_h,

Presumably is to avoid people thinking they'll chance their arm and then driving around for 20 minutes on surrounding streets trying to find a place to park and then causing a nuisance when they invariably park too close to a junction or whatevs.

No parking space = no car.

    Doubt it works though.

    @edd1e_h - I couldn't possibly comment...

I think because there are several organisations in our office with their own allocations of spaces, people were coming in and taking other company's spaces, so we had to establish a policy, rules... procedures!

Of course, it's rare that every single spot is used and there's no doubt one or more vehicle space could be converted to fit extra bikes. Having said that, when we do get a situation where all the spaces are full and Mr S.U.V. Mercedes can't get in then it becomes something of a diplomatic fracas.

As you say, a free-for-all would be more sensible and, with the nearest free parking half a mile away, it would probably defeat the purpose of the average two-mile commute.

    Maybe.

Met 4 Fife-Bound cyclists on the bridge this morning. All of them were alone (as in it wasn't a group ride). All of them were young. All of them were female.

The MAMIL is a dying breed, I tell you...

I sense the need for a new acronym. Any suggestions?

Spoke to another Helios owner today who was looking at copying me and putting a tagalong on the back...

    That'll make spotting me harder...

80 new bike racks put in on south side of George square (front of the library) over the summer. Today they were all full and there were as many bikes as usual locked to the railings.

Was this article shared here already? (it may have been where I saw it)
    http://m.heraldscotland.com/news/13716049.Scots_are_UK_s_top_cyclists/

"And almost a third of people in Edinburgh commute to work on their bikes, higher than any other metropolis, according to new research."

I find that hard to believe??

All of the new bike racks near my office at Heriot-Watt are consistently full up, whilst at the same time there are more bikes locked to the unofficial railings than I remember seeing in previous years.

Heriot watt are installing unofficial railings now. Outrageous. They also have a barrier that won't go up for bikes forcing you on to bike path that ends in massive dropped kerb at their west gate, unless you ignore the official signage

It definitely felt like more this morning on the Innocent. Hi-viz in every direction. This may be due to leaving a little later. Hope they've all got waterproofs for the return!

At work the racks are always full now - but then it's KB and term time. At the start of term, the bike shed seems to fill with bikes that never move subsequently - this I find very annoying.

I cycled to Dalry pool at 6:45 this morning and was passed by 2 cyclists (50% of whom had lights...) and saw at least a couple more (only noticed one due to their very bright front light down a side street).

There was a veritable peloton (5 waiting and another couple coming along behind) going down Morrison Street last night.

People who cycle once then never want to do it again? :-(

We were up in Aviemore a couple of weekends ago and my wife (no pressure from me, perhaps slight pressure from our son) took to 2 wheels for the first time in 40 years !!

Not saying it will be a regular event, but 'more cycling' has not been ruled out - perhaps with some padded undershorts next time :-)

Well worth the £15 for her (very competent) Genesis hardtail MTB from the lovely team at Bothy Bikes.

I was stuck in traffic this morning at about 0830. I was on the towpath heading out of town and was number four in a line of seven bikes moving west. The traffic was perhaps going slightly slower than I would have chosen, but there was no way to overtake because of a regular stream of bikes coming the other way too. It was awesome!

(It was also a little frustrating: it's interesting how quickly I started to revert to grumpy motorist mode. Normally we aren't held up in bike-only congestion, so it's interesting how all the same behaviours started to appear in me as I see in the people stuck in their cars on Colinton Road)

    Sciennes today (not my photo).

No cycle training or 'ride to school day'.

Might be related to School Street.

I've been keeping an informal count in my head of cyclists seen on the QBC from Marshall Street to just beyond Salisbury place on my way to and from work for several years now. Just wish I'd popped the numbers into a spreadsheet every day, but there you are, it's just anecdotal.

Usual walking to work time between 8.15am and 9.30am I've seen the numbers go up from on average (just guessing here) 40ish to 60ish, depending on the time of year. During term time this usually coincides with a fair chunk of the school run, mainly on the way to Sciennes I'd guess, though it beats me why they cycle on that busy thoroughfare when there are several quieter streets to the west.

Numbers drop during the summer even though the weather is generally better for cycling, with summer holidays and school and university being out.

Numbers are thinner in the afternoon (generally between 4.30pm and 4.50pm), 40 is a very good day, with averages around 30 I'd guess. But these numbers are not swelled by school travellers and it's a tad early for going-home commuters. However, I'd say they have gone up, earlier on 30 would have been unusually high.

This year I'm seeing what I believe to be an increase in uni students, though that fluctuates like all things with eager beavers at start of the academic year falling off somewhat, but even so it feels like substantially more. I can tell the uni students because I believe they tend not to go in for high vis, and helmetless more often, whilst my feeling is the work commuters tend to be suited up.

I'm moving office at the end of the week, to the West Port area, so won't be making my mental tally every day, but just thought I'd like to throw this out there for what it's worth.

I counted 82 this morning, 8.17 am to 8.35 am.
Fair morning, mild, some high cloud, very pleasant if it weren't for all the bloody cars.

I counted 3 cycles on my 8 mile journey to work today, yesterday I only counted 1.

Same time frame as above, counted 52 cyclists on the QBC.
Damp but mild, rather dark with heavy overcast.
I started counting cars as well, it was about 25-1 until I got near Hope Park Terrace, then there were more bikes and cars so I lost track of the cars.

Five bikes (myself included) this evening at about 1745 making their way up Craighouse Hill. I'm 99% sure it wasn't a group ride (judging by the different speeds and stuff), just five commuters going home.

I have never seen more than one there before.

There were also bikes on every arm of the Myreside/Colinton Road junction, but that's more common.

On the way to PY this morning saw LOTS - esp on MMW.

Sunny (not warm!), no wind for a change, but it's only Feb.

Normal PY is on a Friday, when fewer people cycle, but even so.
