Though I appreciate this is straying from whether or not e-bikes can be parked in a railway station, charging from OHLE under normal running is actually standard practice according to Stadler and Siemens. It provides the best resilience for battery power being available when the wires end. And if charging was limited only to when the train was stopped, there is the possibility that the timetable would have to accommodate that through sufficient dwell time. It all depends how much track is covered by the wires vs. how much running on batteries, vs. how much energy you can cram into the batteries.
A recent Railway Industry Association (RIA) paper, which David Shirres reviews elsewhere in this issue, envisages a lot more bi-mode operation, and these trains will generally charge their batteries whilst running under OLE, although sometimes short OLE sections may be provided at, say, reversing points, to charge batteries during a train’s layover.- Rail Engineer, June 2024
