    Complete list -

    http://edinburghcouncil.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/full-list-of-road-changes.pdf

Princes Street and area most of day

    Parts of Holyrood Park

Church Hill area most of day

Route from airport for about an hour

Tollcross etc. an hour before lunch

Morningside etc. an hour after lunch

PLUS footbridge between Rutland Square and Festival Square most of day.

Times are when road can be shut, actual timings likely to be less than an hour - long enough for motorcade to pass through.

Hmm. Is this going to effect me riding up Leith Walk and over the bridges at rush hour?

I guess the Roseburn will steer me safe...

Bridges/Leith Street route stays open (apart from actual times of motorcade movement).

No doubt there will be rush hour gridlock as a consequence (Mound shut).

    A day for cycling really...

There is also a city centre map showing the closures. Fortunately most are rolling closures, and the parking restrictions extend to the bypass overbridges.

Cynic: It might be more interesting to watch the car drivers getting hopelessly tangled.

I'm sure chdot will be omnipresent with his camera, taking snaps for the Cycling in Edinburgh flickr group!

I'm thinking likewise, it might actually be a better day to break out the hardtail and do some serious traffic jamming!

Mind you, the bridges haven't been that exciting even when the mound was shut for trams.

    Lothian Road shut too tomorrow.

Thinking I might work at home tomorrow. I'm sure the cycling will be fine, probably uneventful as usual but I can't really trust Scotrail not to throw a massive spanner in the works by cancelling services left right and centre.
My train today was cancelled and the Pope isn't even here yet!

Also what are the chanhces of turning up at Haymarket and being told I can't lock my bike up as it's a security risk. Given that every single adjoining road to the Glasgow road is going to have parking restrictions for the first 20m (massive, expensive overkill, or what?) the idea that Haymarket bike parking might be disrupted seems all too likely.

(As an aside, what's with Haymarket these days? Number of bikes being left has gone through the roof in the last few weeks. The rackss are always full and even the railings are running out of space.)

Are you joking? I'm gonna be out there with my camera taking full advantage of the circus of chaos. With any luck I'll have enough money to buy a 99 off the pope!

Remember - St Andrew Square will be open from 8am to 6pm, and is providing secure cycle parking, so you shouldn't have to worry about finding a bike parking space at that end of town. Dr Bike will also be hand from 8am - 12pm, servicing bikes for free.

Amusing quote from council's Outlook paper which was pushed through the door yesterday. From an article describing how great Edinburgh is at staging big events:

"on 16 September millions watched on TV as Pope Benedict travelled along Princes Street as part of an official visit to Scotland"

    Oops.

Lothian Road already shut (to cars).

The Mound due to shut at 9.15.

Bridges/Leith Street route to remain open (apart from parade/convoy times).

I'm about to head out. Still can't decide what to ride. If the Mound is open then it's probably not going to be clogged over the bridges...

Perhaps Spokes members should hang out on street corners handing out maps!

Well i made it to the office in truly record time! After posting that message 40mins ago i've packed my stuff riden to the office and had a shower now ready to start procrastination errm work.

Don't know if the roads were quieter if i was just really early or if the gorgie route is significantly quicker will have to experiment.

Yep, I also set a (MTB) record time coming in through the city centre.

Don't know where all the commuters went, but basically nobody was driving in from the south side - I'd say about 1/3 of usual traffic volume on the bridges.

On the downside I realised how much slower my MTB is than the lowracer, but on the upside I got a fantastic workout!

recombodna - Dr Bike is indeed a doctor, we just need to get a blue flashing light for the cargo bike!

One of our cycle trainers used to be a vet!

I had to walk in this morning due to a surprise chain break and another bike in getting its bottom bracket re-greased before the C2C.

There were more walkers than usual for sure - not sure about the number of bikes - hard to tell.

"There were more walkers than usual for sure"

It's certainly the case that a remarkably number of people drive less than two miles.

Perhaps a few will continue with today's novelty(?)

George Street is back to being bus playground and was quite tricky for bikes an hour ago. The Bike Station's setup was pretty quiet, almost as though everyone was just staying home, but it might just be people delaying their journeys.

West of Haymarket, and south of Lothian Road on the Bruntsfield-Tollcross alignment, it was business as usual. Enjoy it while you can!

I wonder how many people have walked instead of taking the bus, there were a few in my office who decided that the bus was too risky if the traffic was bad and resolved to walk.

Quite nice seeing Morningside Road and the Glasgow Road at Haymarket completely free of parked cars.

A road sweeping truck was on Morningside Road making things look nice for his holyness. Mind you, makes sense to get in there while there are no parked cars.

Fencing had been put in at the narrow bits near Churchhill to keep those annoying peds from straying onto the road.
Personally I hope that he'll be waving at empty pavements as he drives past.

Couple of policemen on the platform at Haymarket looking bored.

It was a bit quieter on the roads this morning heading West out of town, but more like summer holiday quiet than there being an exceptional event afoot. Thoroughly uneventful ride, only point of note being a gent at Haymarket on a silver MTB with one of those kids bikes you clamp onto the seat post (don't know the technical term, you know what I mean, the ones without a front wheel) trying to hold a phone conversation and pedal his long vehicle at the same time. No sign of the kid, presume it fell off a couple of miles back.

I'd like to offer thanks to the pontiff for arranging for the headwind to drop to a more tolerable level. I'd also like to thank him for arranging to have the hole where Corstorphine Road meets Roseburn Terrace filled in, after sitting open and unattended for about a month (with a mocking sign apologising for the "essential gas mains work") and causing the bus lane to be blocked. He must have a direct line from the Vatican to Clarence HQ.
